This one is pretty good done. I like how you used the bevel at beggining but you should try to reduce the poly count and don't use ngons and triangles. Keep going!

Unless he uses subdivision surface, ngons are not a problem on a flat plane.

why are you selecting the 4 points and creating polys? Just select the two edges and f to create the polys.

in the top right corner of the viewport window you justneed to click on the arrow and have all the options there (viewport shading), I think he is using "random" in this video

Go to sketchfab and search for tire. You will get better than a picture
