As car guys, we all love the car event talk. Its you and your buddys at a cars and coffee talking about cars and how you've modified them. We want to capture those times in video form. This will hopefully be the first of many "Car Tours With Dave" videos that we feature on the channel. Who knows, maybe your vehicle could be featured one day!
In todays Car Tour, we are talking a look at Dave 1956 Chevrolet TriFive Gasser build. Not only does this car hurt necks out on the street, but it also breaks hearts on the strip.
The original build started with Steven Caouette in 1994
Welcome, car enthusiasts! Join Dave from First Place Auto Parts as he takes us on a tour of his pride and joy, a 1956 Chevrolet Gasser. If you're passionate about classic cars and wrenching in your garage, you're in for a treat. Dave shares the unique modifications and personal touches he's added to make his hot rod stand out.
🔧 *Modifications:*
From the vibrant Mopar color scheme (Lemon Twist Yellow and Basic White) to the raised front end inspired by gasser tradition, Dave's 1956 Chevrolet is a sight to behold. He walks us through the details, explaining the front end modifications, ball joint spacers, and station wagon springs. The Thunderbolt hood scoop, borrowed from Ford cars, adds both style and functionality to expel heat during drag strip runs.
🚗 *Wheels and Brakes:*
Dave dives into his wheel choice - classic Craggers, which he's always loved. He shares the journey of upgrading to disc brakes, ensuring better performance and addressing brake fade issues. The rear wheels, 10-inch reverse offset Craggers, required adjustments to accommodate larger tires and a rear disc brake conversion kit from First Place Auto Parts.
👀 *Exterior Tweaks:*
Discover the exterior modifications, such as the removal of the front bumper, the addition of a frame spreader bar, and the Thunderbolt hood scoop. Dave also highlights the station wagon bumper, providing a unique license plate placement, and an inconspicuous electrical shut-off switch for drag strip safety.
🔧 *Under the Hood:*
Get ready for the big reveal as Dave opens the hood to showcase the heart of his Gasser. A robust 454 Chevrolet, bored 30 over to 468, sits beneath a tilt front end. Learn about the tunnel ram intake, dual four-barrel carburetors, and the reliability of this 500-550 horsepower powerhouse. Dave shares insights on tuning tunnel ram carburetors for street use and emphasizes the joy of working on a tilt front end.
🚗 *Interior Upgrades:*
Step inside to see the non-stock interior featuring early '60s Impala front bucket seats, a Tachometer mounted without drilling, and the addition of a Tremec TKO 600 for a fifth gear. Dave also points out the line lock button for drag strip burnouts and the installation of robust safety belts.
👂 *Engage and Connect:*
Have questions about the modifications or ideas for improvements? Drop your comments below, and Dave will be there to respond. Whether you're a fellow car enthusiast or a curious viewer, enjoy the passion and craftsmanship that goes into this 1956 Chevrolet Gasser.

Very nice car! I'm 77 and grew up gassers back in the day...had several gassers..bracket racers and street rods. All my magnesium wheels are now on tri five drag cars in the Northeast...kept my favorite..the 56 150 utility that delivered phone books to our home in Nor Cal..assembled in Oakland with a one piece frame and the paint code reads spec...army green. Still have it and a few bugs to fix and will be ready to drve...again...LOL

I can't think of anything I would do differently. Your car is so nice. My second car was a 56 four door but it ignited my love for Chevys. I've owned 3 55s since then.

Hey David, awesome looking Gasser, that is really cool you were able to use a A-arm and ball joint front end, I have a 55 big window truck that I think would make a really cool Gasser, how many inches of lift were you able to get with your setup, and was that about the max lift you can expect to get with your setup , I bet drive ability on your car is very nice, I know a lot of the Gasser guy’s out there through KZbin, thank you for the walk around your 55 is sweet, have a great day. Thank you for the video, Dave what brand of Headers & what size pipe? and is the engine in stock location? what steering box? thanks again.
@FirstPlaceAutoParts
@FirstPlaceAutoParts Жыл бұрын
The headers were custom made for the car and are 2 1/4"" in diameter. The engine is mounted forward of the stock location which provides more clearance at the back of the engine for valve cover clearance. Stock manual steering box in the stock location. Header to steering box gap is approximately 1/4" which put a premium on controlling side to side engine movement (one solid motor mount, one poly mount)

Sweet car. I'm currently building a 56 Gasser, but I'm running a straight axle and a blower. I was curious, have you weighed the car? I'm really curious what this one weighs as it's similar to mine.
@FirstPlaceAutoParts
@FirstPlaceAutoParts Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comments & for watching the video. The car weighted 3850 on the scales at Atlanta Dragway before it closed without the driver...which is almost exactly the same weight as my 1970 iron headed big block Chevelle. Definitely not a light weight. Good luck on your gasser project, a blown engine with a straight axle will be perfect!

Thank you for the reply, Dave what station wagon springs did you use? and i have seen ball joint spacers on Ebay will they work? Thanks. roger
@FirstPlaceAutoParts
@FirstPlaceAutoParts Жыл бұрын
Its been 18 years since I first installed them but if memory serves me correctly they were mid to late 60 Impala wagon springs. Not familiar with the eBay spacers so I can't comment on those. The spacers are pretty simple. Be sure to use high quality fasteners when installing the spacer, install new upper ball joints at a minimum and keep your fingers in a safe place when compressing and installing the springs (typically longer and higher spring rate that stock). Kind of like stuffing an 8 pound item in a 5 pound box. Also, your alignment guy is going to look at you sideways when you take it to get aligned! Good luck on your project! Its worth while if you want that look but don't want to install a straight axle.

I will make a video showing the components of how the front end was made soon. A heads up, it uses the OE steel fenders/hood that were welded together to make them one

Installing pocket kits in my 56 210 how wide of slick were you able to get in there ? Nice work too !!

My springs are mounted inside the frame (not pocketed). 12" wide wheel with a 10" wide (31" diameter) pie crust cheater slick. Rear end was narrowed and inner fender wells stretched 3" as well. Thanks for watching and the comment. Good luck on your project!

what are your rim and tire size?
@FirstPlaceAutoParts
@FirstPlaceAutoParts 2 жыл бұрын
rear rims are 10" wide, reverse offset, rear tires are 31" diameter cheater slicks (from M&H molds) from Towel City Racing. Front rims are 3.5" wide with 155/80/15 tires

It needs some sort of roll bar -at minimum a 6 pt...how quick.is it?
@FirstPlaceAutoParts
@FirstPlaceAutoParts 2 жыл бұрын
Low 12's in the quarter. Its a street car that gets drive to and back from the track which means no trailer and not set on "kill" at the launch. The cheater slicks are cool but really do not hook with consistency. Its a fun car drive but an acquired taste with the manual brakes and steering

My all time favorite car in the whole world. I wouldn't change much, but I would add some kind of rollback. Safety first, and I would delete that ugly FORD scoop off the hood. Who in their right mind would do that to such beautiful machine.

Well , I had a 69 ss, I put three inch lift springs front and back , then I put ball joint spacers in the front. And ladder bars in the back , that gave it the height , with 12 inch wheels out back with n 50 15 tires , then 6 inch wheels in front with f 78 15 tires , it had the look , but it was 1979 lol looked good butt drove funky because of the tires , good radials would have helped , also speed way motors makes a straight axle kit for the front thats very nice. Air shocks just blow out so put lift springs in the back , and today I would use adjustable trailing arms for the rear to keep the pinion angle correct so it won't wheel hop,good luck !
