One of the methods Columbo used was to make up a scenario of how the murder happened, not matter how far fetched, and then depending on how much effort his suspect uses to explain it away gives him a clue he's on the right track.

This is one of the best "non-ending" scenes of Columbo breaking down the possible scenarios in a crime scene. Also, I really like Jackie Cooper's frenetic go-getter energy in this scene. It's a foreshadowing of the similar energy he brought to Perry White in the Superman films.

Haywood begins like the typical villain in the series, explaining to the Lieutenant the vagaries of contract killers, and then retreats when he realizes that not only has Colombo done his homework before entering his office, he actually knows the murder scene was a sham. What I love about this episode is that all these things Columbo keeps highlighting, are of no use whatsoever in identifying the culprit. I guess they’re simply designed to keep nibbling away at the suspect’s conscious, until he finally makes a mistake and reveals himself. It’s classic Columbo and a testimony to the marvellous writers that they had. Brilliant

I always liked the way Columbo was pretending to be a fool while letting the killer be smart, until he was gradually cornering him. I think Columbo should be the only series worth showing the killer in the first scene and then see how "the fool" hunts them slowly and inexorably. PS: remember the joke that the guy who comes out of the cinema and tells those in the queue: the killer is the butler. In this case, someone in the queue could say: yes, but I only come to see how Columbo catches him. That is the fun.

Columbo’s arguments would be shredded to pieces by the defense if not for his suspects admitting guilt every single stinking time. Lawyer up, ya dummies!
@macnolds4145
@macnolds4145 4 жыл бұрын
You're right, but I think that's the point. Lawyers would often be able to come up with reasonable alternative theories to counter Columbo's proposed scenarios, and they would certainly be able to dull the intended impact of his "little things" brand of circumstantial evidence. Hence, Columbo's goal is to weaken the primary suspect as much as possible before the trial even begins, perhaps even making them admit defeat altogether. Furthermore, Columbo (or rather the prosecuting state attorney) would certainly be able to sway the jury, even if his case wasn't airtight, as the jurors- like Columbo himself- would soon start believing that the defendant was the killer, regardless of the state's ability to "prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt".

The other plausible explanation is that there were two assailants in the red car. The driver never got out of the red car. He pulled into the driveway, the other assailant got out of the passenger side, shot the victim from the direction Columbo said the bullet came from, got back in the car and they both drove away. The whole thing would have gone down in less than 10 seconds. I don't understand why they never considered there might have been two people in the red car.
@javiergilvidal1558

Yeah, and another howler is the timing of the phone call. Columbo claims the killer did not have time to slay his victim and telephone his message, because the only phone around was unavailable since it was in a gas station that didn´t open that day. It didn´t occur to him (or Howard, who could have easily refuted him) that a THIRD accomplice might have phoned at a time pre-established with his buddies when the crime was expected to be committed. Accustomed to doing everything on his own, Columbo can´t conceive of teamwork!
@LeonAllanDavis
@LeonAllanDavis 5 жыл бұрын
Big plot hole... You can't get "ballistics" from a corpse. You have to know precisely how the victim was positioned when the bullet arrived. There is no way to determine the trajectory of the slug otherwise. Even if the bullet went through the victim and hit a wall, it could have been deflected by a bone... you'd get a "bank shot"...
@LeonAllanDavis
@LeonAllanDavis 5 жыл бұрын
@Stu Yeah...I'm trying to figure this one out myself. Let's say the victim is sitting in a chair, watching television. Of course he is directly facing the TV. On the left side of the TV there's a door and on the right, a window. Our boy gets shot in the chest. If we stick a long wooden dowel through the path of the bullet wound, the free end will point either to the door on the left, or to the window on the right. But if our boy was standing out in the middle of his driveway and took a slug, there's no way of knowing which way he was facing when the bullet entered his chest. If he's getting out of his car, you can narrow it down by half but still, the shot could have come from the left, or the right. Again, we don't know the precise orientation of the body. If the slug goes through the victim and hits a masonry wall, or embeds itself in a wood fence, then you have an angle on the trajectory. Maybe. If the slug goes through the victim and leaves a nice blood spatter on the driveway, you've got yourself a good clue regarding the angle of flight. If the bullet exits our guy and hits the car, we're golden. But at the end of the day, what does it really matter? Unless he dropped a clue, determining where the shooter was hiding is not going to identify who he was. It was just some guy hiding in the bushes. It could have been here, or it coulda been over there. Reminds me of Mona Lisa Vito in "My Cousin Vinny"... "do you think that poor little deer gives a fuck what kind of pants you're wearing?"
@LeonAllanDavis
@LeonAllanDavis 5 жыл бұрын
@Stu Thanks, Stu...seriously, I highly doubt the writers of Columbo "grappled" with much of anything when they constructed their plots. They dreamed up a "hook" then wrote directly toward that, and damn the consequences. And even though I have all the admiration in the world for Levinson and Link, they were big city guys with a limited world view. They were born in Philadelphia but they're both New York City guys. Be that as it may, let's have some fun with it... I would have created Columbo as a more clever character. A deep guy with a lot of layers. Very devious. Cunning. Three dimensional chess. For example, who the hell cares where the bullet came from? They guy is dead. What I DO care about is the exact time the victim got home. In any criminal investigation, the timeline is king. All other evidence is subservient to the timeline. Now Columbo did the "hand on the hood of the car" thing but that's the oldest wheeze in detective stories. It may have worked back in the days of Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammett but modern cars have a thick blanket of sound absorbant under there. The hood will always be cool to the touch. Here's the dialogue I would have written... Columbo's soliloquy, talking to the murderer. "I wonder ..what time he got home...boy, that's a tough one to figure out! We have blood stains all over the driveway, but they're all dried out. No help at all. Tell you what, sir, do you happen to have a meat thermometer in your briefcase? No? Well, that's okay. I have one here somewhere. I swiped it from my wife. No, it's not in that pocket. You know, she was so mad when she lost her meat thermometer, I had to buy her a new one. Sneak it back into the kitchen. It was the wrong brand, but hey! What are ya gonna do? I tell you sir, my wife makes the best roast chicken! All nice and crispy on the outside, with herbs. Oh, yes! Found it! In this pocket! Would you pop the hood for me sir? The release is under the dash. On the left side. Terrific! Now I'll just remove the radiator cap and check the water. Here we go! One hundred and sixty-two degrees. See that? One sixty-two on the nose. The boys down at the lab can figure out the rest. Math was my worst subject. Are you good at math, sir?" And in a later scene. "The boys at the lab calculated that the victim arrived home at precisely four minutes past seven. Could you tell me, sir...where were you at four minutes past seven?"
@LeonAllanDavis
@LeonAllanDavis 5 жыл бұрын
@Stu I still don't get the angle thing. Bottom line, Hollywood types are "anti-gun". They don't like guns. Which means they don't understand 'em. I'm in Arizona all my life. I do. Hollywood talking about guns is like vegans talking about a hamburger sandwich. Whatever they say is going to be wrong. Unless the plot is written around the trajectory of the bullet, the angle is largely immaterial. For example...and I'm relying on an unreliable memory, in an episode of "Rumpole of the Bailey" - "Rumpole and the Sporting Life", a poacher shot the husband...not the wife...Rumpole determined this from the trajectory of the shot...the poacher had been potting pheasants from his kitchen window and hit the husband by accident... Otherwise, in this particular murder, "distance" is more important than "angle". If I can calculate the distance between the shooter and the victim, the angle works itself out. Distance is determined by the caliber and fps (feet per second) of the bullet...the size of the entry and exit points of the wound, and so forth. . Myself being an exception, not many people can hit a target with a pistol at much over 20 feet. I can shoot a tight group at 75' but I've had over 50 years of practice. Potting someone at night is problematic. Accuracy falls way off...

Once again, the killer only confirms to Columbo that he's guilty by the way he argues against a case that might implicate him. 3:56 getting worked up. Oh, who here has ever thrown rocks at a street light?

were the shots really from THAT direction? between what i remember from the episode and the already parked card, that shot seems implausible

One other posibility is that there could be two person in that car. The driver hit the spot and the killer from passenger seat got out and shot the victim.

I love that all of them forget that flashlight exists in the 70s and a theory of the killer could've used it can also be considered. This episode is great but some plotlines reaaally forced to go into a certain direction that the filmmaker wanted to.

Excepting we know who did it, there could have been two assassins. One got out of the passenger side door and shot from the proper angle.

The killer tells Columbo that he will talk to him whenever he wants for as long as he wants. Then two minutes after Columbo starts talking, the killer tells him he is very busy and thats that. Just like a true politician.

This one is available in a few places. Look for it. There's even an audio version that's quite good. You can listen to that, and then view it French, if you'd like a little fun. English full episode is out there tho.

@@sithlord8977 . This channel is an official YT Columbo channel and want people to buy the entire box set, that is why they only upload clips and the odd few full episodes some of which they delete again later. The only way to see Columbo in the same quality as on here is to buy it. If other people uploaded full episodes in the same quality as here, they would get taken down again for breach of copyright. Personally I recorded this episode from a TV broadcast a few years using a DVD recorder in the highest possible recording mode and it is almost as good quality as on here.

Never offer Columbo explanations. Cooper's big mistake throughout the episode is that he always offers the correct response after the wrong one. If he had just heard out Columbo's speculation and then reacted with "Very interesting," that would have been way less suspicious. Same thing with the suit. He kept interrupting him before then giving a good answer.

what if there were 2 perpetrators? The 2nd would have gotten out of the right side of the vehicle. But the senator didn't think of that because he was just trying to figure out how to explain how he didn't do it. Such a good episode.
