Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. Our part-time employee, Brock, also helps with the filming. 1980 was our first year in Waldron where our main farm is now. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.
I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.
I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate you subscribing to my channel and liking my videos. You can also find me on Facebook borderviewfarms and on Instagram @borderviewfarms

Screw all of that. People need to slow down and watch what they are doing. She made a bad decision and made bad assumptions. It’s not like you pulled out in front of her and she had the right of way. She knew you were there and she hit you from the rear. Farm equipment has just as much right to be on the roads as anything. Moral of the story… NEVER PASS LARGE EQUIPMENT UNLESS THE DRIVER KNOWS YOU ARE PASSING AND BOTH OF YOU KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING!! Never assume.

Been a truck driver 35 plus years, the driving public gets worse every day. My dumptruck has strobes and it doesn't matter, all they want is to get around EVERYONE in front of them. People leave their house 20 minutes late and expect to make up on the road.

Like your dad said Nathan that's why we carry insurance. Was moving the combine to a field on US 12 in Michigan and was doing same thing turning into field entrance with someone behind me and they claimed that they thought I was letting them by and passed my father's truck and hit my combine even though I was in the middle of road blocking traffic. People just have to have patients and give us time to do our thing.

As farmers we have all said for years equipment needs a separate lights for turn signal, the ones on them now are too confusing but the equipment builders haven't changed anything but the odd part is all European equipment has separate turn signals, including the ones that are imported here. Chalk it up to a learning experience for both of you and fix the turn signals

Agree with what you're saying but there are resources available that a reasonable farmer could use to improve that situation. Maybe a aftermarket company could drum up business by making road signal kits.

I farm just southeast of Columbus. In 2021 I was hit twice in the same situation you were - turning left into a field by an idiot that decided to pass. The first time was an 18 y/o going 60 in a 45 that passed 3 other cars to hit me square in the front axle in the middle of the turn. Spun my tractor 270 degrees. I only stppoed spinning because my back tire rotated enough to hit the drawbar of the drill I was pulling. By some strange coincidence, I was wearing my lap belt for once and was fine. (100hp open station tractor, I would have been thrown off otherwise). That particular situation ended VERY quickly after the state troopers saw the dashcam footage from someone 2 cars behind me. Wearing my lap belt has become second nature since.

I agree with you that people don’t see turn signals on equipment because they think they’re just flashers. I use turn signals anyways just so if there’s an accident at least I can say I used it. I think they should take flashers off farm equipment and replace them with turn signals and brake lights on everything, then use strobes for warning lights.

I farm in NW Ohio and travel similar roads to this one. There are so many impatient drivers on the road with us. The painted lines on the roads are meaningless to drivers when they want is to get around us. Taking a tractor with a wide implement, a combine or sprayer down the road is serious, dangerous work that most of us take for granted. We sit in a precarious position on this equipment. I’ve begun wearing my seatbelt when moving down the road. If there is a heavy impact collision I don’t want to get thrown off the machine or go through glass. It’s important that are turn signals and highway flashers work and we use them. Like your channel, be safe.

Nathan it wasn't your fault. Unfortunately Farm accidents happen all too often. Many years ago my father was getting ready to turn into our farm driveway with our combine and a semi came up behind him wasn't paying attention apparently Hit the combine rolling it over. The grain auger went through the cab of the semi and just missed the driver. To combine ended up on its side in the front yard to our farm. Oh Happy belated birthday also Nathan.

Nathan, that is my biggest fear! And visibility in the John Deere sprayers is probably the worst of anything we operate. I hate going down the paved roads. Years ago a girl ran into the side of one of my trucks at probably 70mph. She never applied her brakes, but actually hit the truck just behind the cab across the ditch in the edge of the wheat field. My driver was completely legal and had the turn signal on. I only had liability on the truck & trailer. It was the 3rd car she had totalled in 6 months. State Farm washed their hands because of only having liability. Until Allstate attempted to collect. Then they had my driver & myself give depositions. I had to repair the truck on my dime. Because the deputy sheriff wouldn't assign blame. I hate being on public roads.😊

Almost guarantee you will have legal complications. Been there done that in similar situation, even when other party at fault or you have partial fault (court and state law determine fault, not the officer). They follow the money. Farmer must have $ with big green equipment and land. They not only will pursue you legally, but your farm corporations. A few days from now they will magically have medical issues and lawyer up. Make sure you talk with your insurance company. Keep log of details and photos, they will help in court. Thankfully my attorney was better than theirs in court.

I have great insurance and carry way more than I should for this reason. I also have 3 million in an umbrella policy to cma aka cya. The officer is wrong in this instance they are trained to give out tickets and expect you to pay even when you are not at fault. It’s a monopoly what they do. Anyways

My landlord has a car and truck repair shop next door which uses the same driveways as the house apartment we are in. Behind the shop our landlord also rents space for trucking companies and various large vehicle storage. One day I was outside and heard a semi slowing down to turn right into the driveway. To make the turn the semi driver swung the tractor out into the oncoming lane which of course made the trailer go to the left some. Some idiot going too fast in a car behind him thought that he could then pass the semi on the right just as the truck began turning right. The car screeched to a halt and the truck driver absolutely laid on the horn. Luckily there was no contact between the two vehicles. I imagine the car in the worst case scenario could have hit the truck fuel tank and poof we have fire 🔥. 1/2 mile further down the road is a golf course then a marsh then lots of townhomes. I used to mow the neighbors huge lawn and I’d find dozens of gold balls on the lawn per year until I got tired of the golf balls nearly hitting me, talked to the manager and said if I got hit with a golf ball I would go to an attorney who would then contact them.

Oh one last thing in our situation due to the fact of the no fault auto insurance in Michigan the driver car insurance had no choice but to fix their vehicle just like any other accident. They shouldn't have any reason to bother you except for just to do it out of spite to get money because some reason people think just because we have the equipment they think we have all this money. If people only knew the financial situation that farmers are in with cost of equipment and farm loans. We pay off every year for operations. They wouldn't be so quick to try to take advantage of us in these situations.

When I was still living at home on the farm our mail man, who was also a framer, was pulling a wagon full of hay down the road was turning into his driveway when a car went to pass him and hit the tractor flipping into the ditch killing him instantly. Nobody likes to be in an accident but they do happen. Brian Brown talked about the pitfalls of turning left when you're in a big piece of machinery because sometimes your view is obstructed. Most people will understand that the farm machinery is going slow for 2 reasons...to turn left or to let traffic past. Maybe the fact that your indicators were not working played a big part in the accident. But it happened and there's nothing you can do about it and no one was hurt which is the main thing. The police give out warnings to the public to be careful when you are on the roads during the planting/harvest time because of the big slow moving machines....Get your indicaters fixed.

It happens. From a legal point of view never admit anything to the police. If they ask you a question you have to answer honestly but never volunteer info. Let the office determine guilt. I work for a global engineering firm and that is the first thing they teach you if you are in an accident. Check to make sure everyone is ok but never admit guilt even if you are the one that caused the accident! In todays sue happy world you probably be getting a call from someone with her insurance. It's just the world we live in. I would check them flashers though and make sure they work. Even if they make things worse if you used them you have met your legal obligations. I witnessed a local farmer get hit turning left with a brand new JD 4955 back in the early 90's by a truck trying to pass right on the driver side front tire. It had the same light situation with the right side just stopping flashing. Truck was totaled but the tractor was repaired but it never was the same. They traded it a year later because of abnormal tire wear. Funny thing was it was a delivery truck from the local Massey Dealer.

I imagine most of us have experienced something similar, road incident that scares both parties or possibly injuries and damage. Perhaps the policeman needs to review the laws regarding farm equipment operating with a SMV emblem. There is NO requirement that you have a mirror for you to look at prior to turning. When following a SMV signed vehicle, the traffic behind is required to yield to the SMV signed equipment. I would suggest, given the damage to the car, you should have John Deere look over the sprayer. I know you've put acres on it since but you need a written record for your files. Praise the Good Lord there was no more damage than you and the driver had.

I have been driving for over 50 years and I have never tried to pass any equipment unless they pull over because as what happen to you SHE HIT YOU. Zero your fault. Blinker on anything can quit working at any time.
