Car Wars, where the right of way goes to the biggest guns! Its 2022, but it feels like 1983, as all the pocket box games have returned. This week I take a look at this classic board game/ rpg crossover classic!

I still have so many fond memories of Car Wars. As a bit of a detail, I grew up pretty poor...single mother all that. But she did her best for us. We always had enough to eat and all that good stuff, but toys and games were in short supply. My friends had Transformers, I had little green army men. But me and my friends all got into gaming, but games being quite expensive I played whatever my friends had. That all changed on my 12th birthday. I open my present and what do I see? The pocket box of Car Wars! I had never even heard of it, but...well I had seen The Road Warrior and it looked cool as hell! So I call up my friends and we give it a try. It quickly became our favourite to play. That 5$ that my mom spent (probably skipped lunch to save it , we were POOR) must have gotten us hundreds of hours of fun. Thanks mom! She really was the best, no offence meant to your moms.

Awwww man! What a great story and thank you so much for sharing it with us. We weren't 'poor'. My grandfather was paid very well at the Steel Mill.. so that tells you how long ago that was, but as a teenager, my only income was the $70 to $100 bucks a week I earned as a stock boy at Sears. lol. Car Wars a GREAT game on ANY budget but the fact that it was so cheap made it very acessisble.

Dude, I feel you on the growing up poor thing! My dad was disabled and my mom busted her ass to make a living. BC of that I truly learned to appreciate and make the most use of the handful of gaming stuff I got. To this day I still have and use my old B/X rulebooks that I got for my 11th b'day in 1981.

You are right in saying that half of the fun in Car Wars was sitting and building the cars! I can't tell you how much time I spent flipping through the Uncle Albert's Guides and building out all sort of cars, planning for the next duel we had! :-) This game was a blast... maybe not for everyone, but it was sure for me... and my circle of friends back in the 80s. If you can locate it, the Uncle Albert's Catalog From Hell is worth grabbing, because it is a compilation of every Uncle Albert supplement/gadget the game had to offer. I know this one used to command high prices in the aftermarket, but maybe it is offered digitally now? Not quite sure.

So if I learned math from Villains & Vigilantes, I learned physics from Car Wars. Weight, mass, time, speed, just made sense as an early teen. I remember that fish tale issue and trying to break out of it, or the boot legger reverse maneuver. So fun. I was mainly into motorcycles, but tended to get killed a lot. I also recall building a truck that had a Canon on the cab. I shot it sideways and it flipped the semi. Oh well, it was worth it.

The Battle Van of Doom, with heavy duty flaming oil-jets (HDFOJ), side flamers, forward HMGs & a top laser turret. Most memorable moment was a bootlegger turn with HDFOJs spraying a lot of parked cycles, preventing reinforcements from interfering with our liberation of Midville from the Regulators. RIP. It was destroyed on the Night of Black Helos, our intro to helicopter rules when the Feds got tired of our Two Counties War and Mudvale Regulators' false flag incident that threatened interstate shipping. We, of course, were former Midville AADA, who became the Irregulars against the Regulators.

I loved those pocket games in ziploc bags: Star Fleet Battles, expansions 1,2,3; O.G.R.E. and G.E.V.; Intruder!; Melee and Wizard; Illuminati; Car Wars. The paper based Aces of Aces game. Around the time of PC games like Spy Hunter. SPI and Avalon Hill. Warhammer and clear dice didn't exist yet. Lead figures were made of ... lead.

Man I remember this game. I only ever got to play it a handful of times, but I remember it very fondly. Ended up as a professional video game developer and have on a couple of occasions got into work on some auto combat games. Unfortunately none of those ever shipped, but car wars and auto duel always had a strong influence on the design.

My friends and I spent many afternoons gleefully destroying each other! An expansion I wouldn't deem necessary but great fun for my group was Dueltrack - gasoline engines and metal armor, which led to our most memorable game. It was a 4-person capture the flag free-for-all in an off-road arena. Each player controlled a pickup and a motorcycle - all equipped with gas engines, metal armor, incendiary ammo, and flamethrowers. Whooo! Explosions everywhere! It came down to the last two cyclists knife-fighting at the base of the flag, truly an experience like no other

I think it was called "Vampyre", one of several TSR released; including "They've Invaded Pleasantville", "Revolt On Anteres", and - most popular in my circle - "Saga"! They were all great fun, quick and easy rules in classic genres. Saga, Norse heroes competing for glory, was my group's fave, mostly because of the witches. The most powerful spellcasters in the game, they could utterly freeze a territory, rendering it barren and useless. We delighted in daring each other to "tease the witch!", and howling when the devastating ice spell was rolled

I remember there being a reprint not long ago in a cardboard box. I picked it up since it was a Steve Jackson game and was cheap. But that 70s style movie poster cover art really spoke to me as well. Unfortunately I never got to play it, but I had so many RP ideas for a WWE style division and roster where you had characters with gimmicks and costumes but fought to the death at times. A super dramatic over the distopia gladiator campaign.

Here's the funny thing. Back in high school so mid-90s, I was a huge BattleTech fan. And I was obsessed with playing similar games. One day I came across the car Wars deluxe edition box set, a big box set that was very heavy because it included all the car Wars rules along with one supplement book. It came with all of the car tokens and included the rules I believe for hovercraft and helicopters. I bought it with the intent of playing it with my friends, but to some extent we were all intimidated by what seemed like an overwhelmingly complex game system. The tools that gave for you to do drifting and turns seemed extremely math heavy, and unfortunately I'm about as far removed from a math minded individual as you can get. So while I have the deluxe edition box set, with the bonus supplement book, and at least one additional book, as well as the 2015 boxes that came out, I've never actually played the game always wanted to and maybe one day I will now because listening to this really got me hyped
@captcorajus
@captcorajus Жыл бұрын
Its not really math heavy at all, except for the Vehicle construction rules, but using the construction sheet keeps everything very manageable. If you liked battle tech, Car Wars is much simpler than that!

I have many fond memories of playing Car Wars, back in the day. Usually it would be one to three of my friends and I, blowing each other up at one of the Arenas in the game. One factor that kept us playing this 'simple' pocket boxed game, was the ability to design and field our own vehicles. So far as I know, I am one of a very rare few people that can say they penetrated the Armadillo Auto-Duel Arena's wall with rocket fire from my custom vehicle. Multi-Linked Micro-Missiles for the win! I was sorry to see the game fade into obscurity over the decades, and while visiting a gaming shop one day, I found a small map, play-test going on. I joined in the fun with a Ram-Plated vehicle and quickly 'killed' all but one of the other players in short order (The one I didn't 'kill' was destroyed by another player). I played several games in succession, always winning. I was even accused of cheating, and being a company plant to prevent players from winning. I found this funny, since I was now in my 40's and most of the players were in their mid-teens to middle 20's. They never even considered that I had played the original pocket boxed version of the game. Sadly, due to an apartment fire and resulting water damages, I lost all my stuff and have not had the resources to replace them as of this time. But the fond memories remain.

Loved this game, It was my first purchase from the original Games Workshop UK store in London, back in '82. This became a staple of weekend gaming for years, I even picked up a copy of 'Autoduel Champions', providing a cross-over with the superhero RPG. I remember it meshing reasonably well, with both systems using segmented movement based on speed. I distinctly recall a session involving a speedster character competing in an arena duel against a collection of 4-wheeled competitors, which was a blast. Thanks for another much-appreciated nostalgia hit!

I have the original game and 6th edition. I was skeptical of 6th edition until I played it a few times. I now have about $400 bucks into it. I now have friends taking matchbox cars, and fitting them to the bases and creating their own models. Instead of taking hours to finish a fight, it now takes less than an hour. Though simplified dramatically, it still plays roughly the same. It's easy to implement your own rules to spice things up. The turning key in the new version is just so nice to use, and someone sneezing doesn't blow all the counters off the map. The game pieces and such are of high quality, and are not flimsy at all. Sure it's pricey, which may turn off some people. I do feel what I purchased though was worth the cost. I don't have the time anymore to play the old version, and teaching the new version is easy. After you play a few games, you realize there are still plenty of strategies to try. I've now played well over a hundred games of it, and my friends still pop over to enjoy the game. Which version is better? Well, it mostly depends on how much time you have. The new version is also way easier to get new players.

I never knew anyone who actually played it as an RPG, but I was always curious about that as an option. When we played, it was always just one-off duels.

I just checked and under gamebooks on Wikipedia if you click on Steve Jackson's Car Wars the page doesn't go to the top of the Car Wars page but goes right down to Other Products for Car Wars where the six-gamebook spin offs I was told about are mentioned. At the top of the whole Car Wars page Wikipedia called the original game a vehicle combat simulation game.

Thanks for the heart. My mother sees Car Wars as children's fare, and old school Star Trek as "satanic" (she's very Catholic). My fear at the time would be that some producer would raid the treasury of all those pocket games byu SPI, Metagaming, SJ Games and so forth, but it never happened because commercial feature films today are all about sociology; inspiring various people of various backgrounds to go into careers; notably undercover cop work which is what superhero films are all about. I went into film to tell stories, not to be a therapist to the movie going masses, so it was one of the many reasons I left. Thanks again for reading ... my film would have kicked ass.

Ogre was my introduction to hex & chit style wargames. Nice and simple... and the sci-fi non-historical aspect can he appealing, as well. The old computer game from Origin Systems was solid... I had the C-64 version. I remember one of the "feelies" that came with it was an actual working radiation badge you would clip on your shirt and wear. lol Gotta love being thematic! ;-)

Unrelated to the video, I just want to tank you, I gave a shot to Castles and Crusades, and it took the place of BFRPG and S&W on my table. It feels like AD&D 1st and a little of 2nd as I remember playing when I was younger. I never dm AD&D because at the time, and even now, I thought the rules were very intimidating, but C&C simplify and modernize things a lot without removing the feeling of the system, it is for AD&D what BFRPG and S&W are for basic D&D. I didn't thought I would like it that much. Not only me, my group is loving it. For now we are playing on their campaign setting, Aihrde, but I want to try to adapt hyperborea to run with C&C some day.

Original Car Wars broke down a second into *15* phases, not 10. Your chosen actions took 3 or 4 phases so fortunately you were not acting every phase. The new version of Car Wars has simplified things into 5 phases per second. I didn't pay much attention to it. I was into Star Frontiers which gave me RPG ranged, melee, vehicle and aerial combat all at once! You could instantly do a Road Warrior scenario including the crazy autogyro pilot.

@@jamiemcdonough6548 Jamie, Car Wars as seen in this video is not a gamebook series. It is a tabletop game. There was a spin-off Car Wars gamebook series from the 80s. Board Game Geek is a website that has better information on these things than Wikipedia.
