Car Wash Malfunction

[Recorded October 2012] With the number of requests I've gotten to revisit this wash, I thought just showing up and doing another ride-through would be a great video. However, by leaving the tailgate down on his truck, the driver in front of me really made things interesting by bringing the machine to a halt and causing it to finish the entire wash cycle without moving. I'm extremely excited that I caught this on camera, and I hope you all enjoy the whole thing as much as I did!
I still go through the wash at the end.

There are a few Tandem machines around here in South Florida. None of them have lasted all that long because they are very prone to damage from people not using them correctly - most have been replaced with Laserwash or ANCIENT partly refurbished Ryko machines (they work about as well as you'd imagine) I've never seen one with a high pressure overhead sweep. That's kinda cool.

@@NicholasNormand well in a touchless automatic on the laser wash m5 and 360 if the arm bumps a tailgate a trailer hitch or a bike rack it has a green light the lights up and tells it to go back a little bit the first time the second time it shuts down

i am also surprised that it didn't attempt to move back. The gas station I work at has a laserwash 360 and if it hits the vehicle, it moves away from the vehicle and tries again at a farther away distance.

Maybe the guy was lifting a bunch of stuff off at home, he probably forgot to lift up his tailgate and left it down in the car wash by accident.

You cant use these with the tailgate down. Common sense says empty all debris from your truck bed before entering. These places are not a trash dump.

@@chaoszombie9995that’s why the side brush stopped because his tailgate was not up usually on the pdq touchless or soft touch on the systems hits something on a vehicle it usually shuts down and also drive forward in the dryers come on and sometimes these machines don’t automatically go back to the home position after it shuts off I’ve had the same problem

Spot-free wash/rinse is with a good RO (reverse osmosis) system. My buddy works for a national car wash company and they use rock salt filter system. Also a chemical is used as a drying agent added to the final rinse to help the water bead up.

As a wash attendant for a tandom there a piece of work to reset. And to all truck owners put up your tailgate automatic washes dont work with them down tuch or tuchless.

PDQ tandems are actually designed to wash all vehicles including dual rear-wheel or dually trucks. The problem lies in people modifying all the time that can give the tandem problems. (Light bars,brush guards, bug shields,etc)

@@ArisBuliteanu Yes. The actual drive sign talks. I cannot remember exactly what the prompts are, but one is “Slowly, Slowly, Slowly” as you get into the bay. If you pull too far into the back it’ll say “Back up! Back up! Back up!” followed by a siren noise.

Yeah friend I'll agree with your comment. He should have never left his truck bed open. That's why the brush can go around the corner. It got stuck in the bed sticking out the door. I go through a car wash freeway car wash but the towel dry the car before you leave where it went through. I like it like that. I think it's better that the machine I'm seeing here have people like to do their car their way they got the right tube. Not a problem. Thank you.

I like the Tandem Touch but i do agree that this unit does not care for trucks. We have one in the El Centro CA area and i can tell that the owners don't care for it and that the "natives" are rough with the unit.

I went through that EXACT car wash about a month ago (I think it was the same one anyway). Is this the one just off the freeway? It's a Conoco, across from a Phillips 66 station, right? I spilled some gas and wanted to wash it off my car, lest it damage the paint. It was a little nervous about it, but it was alright.

Had the car in front of me screw up a laserwash a few months back. It was during cooler weather and it had automatic doors. The doors' code hasn't been perfected yet and the exit door opened before the wash was finished (which I think is supposed to happen so the dryers work better). The only problem was the person pulled out of the bay before the dryer was done. Took it 5 minutes to realize there was no car in it and it reset itself.

On the laser wash m5 360 or 360 plus sometimes they don’t always go back to the home position plus I had the same problem after I payed and when I was in it someone’s car in front of me when I was waiting the manager code me through and I had the same problem when I was in it on the pro touch tandem if you leave your tailgate down on your pick up truck, the side brush will not be able to go across. That’s why it will shut down on the laser-wash m5 360 and 360 plus at the arm hit something on a vehicle the first time it resets it and goes out more if it hits the second time, then it shuts down then it will tell you the drive forward with soap on your car and the dryers will come on

Hey The Elevator Channel! Did you know that over here in Australia we have the WashWorld Lazer systems. I also looked at the payment systems for a PDQ Tandem, The use a Windows CE 6.0 based PC with a ARM based processor which means that it is quite easy to hack through a WiFI connection if the payment system is not setup correctly. Just wanted to give you this tidbit of info.

Your not suppose to leave tailgates down or mirrors extended out, hitches in place in the car wash, this is a prime example of that. The machine didn't estimate the tailgate probably because it was out of sight of the sensors. Tailgate caught it and the machine shut down. Better the machine stop then rip the guy's tailgate off and/ or break the machine, those brushes are very powerful.

6:26 the problem was not the hitch it was his tailgate that was down on his pickup truck because that was the problem you can’t go through a soft touch pro touch tandem with any bicycle rack or a basket rack or anything like a big ladder on a rack in your truck because the side brushes or the top brush will get hung up now a touch less car wash with the laser wash m5 360 or 360 plus if it hits anything like a pickup truck tailgate that is down it resets it and goes out more what it hit behind the vehicle

8:55 the brush thing was spraying bug prep on your car to kill any annoying bugs. PDQ calls it bug prep in ads, anyway. Laserwashes do the same bug prep before presoak.

This was a 2000 Toyota Avalon XLS. He doesn't have it anymore, now he has a 2009 Toyota Avalon Limited. Both of the belonged to his mom originally, and they were both handed down to him. The 2000 was sold to KZbin user DieselDucy.

i would say no because ryko system uses hydraulics to push the brushes back and since they don't move across by using a chain to guide it, the force is not applied to the bush. but the bushes would probably bang against it and since the system tells the brushes once the car wash finds the back they they go further and even if the brushes hit the tail gate it would just continue to move back and go around the tale gate,

I have had a lot of things happen at washes I service, One man took his fathers brand new truck through with a wheel chair rack attached to the back and then got peeved when the machine ripped it off the back. Even though its posted not to go in with anything in the tow receiver of the vehicle. Some how its the wash owners fault for his stupidity. Loose items in pick up beds is another good one, they blow around when under the dryer and can crack windows. I've seen ratchet straps get hooked by the top brushes and lift a truck off the ground.

I have a question My 2000 Dodge ram 1500 has a light bar behind the cab with 2 KC lights on it that stick about 5 to 6 inches above the roof would it be ok to bring it into an automatic car wash?

It's an LED display, and the AC refresh rate of the LEDs often clashes with the framerate of cameras, which causes the effect of slowly fading in and out. It's not doing that in person.

With Touchless, But they suck with friction. their touchless systems are amazing exept for the G5-S, you have to call for maintainence every time the power goes out... thats why they arent very popular in florida because we have lightning ALOT and and that causes power outages

If it wouldn't have stopped it could've damaged his truck and the wash. If it wouldn't of stopped, the owners would have to pay potential thousands of dollars in damages, while the man in the truck would have to pay for damage on his truck if it did damage his truck. That sensor just saved thousands of dollars by preventing a full collision

Me and my friends would've taken a 2008 Scion xb to that PDQ tandem car wash that is malfunctioning and falling apart and that guy and his truck were in that car wash and the side bursh got stuck by the back of his truck and i'm sorry about that and one of it's car wash parts is gapped up at the top someone drove right into there and also know that this car wash does not like washing tall vehicles that i know of.

It didn't break. It shut down for safety purposes. Then it did a self-test after the truck guy pulled out.

Sometimes these pdq systems the newer ones on the pro touch tandem the laser wash m5 360 and 360 plus after the wash shuts down it says the car wash is closed on the payment machine sometimes it resets it and sometimes these systems reset and go back to the home position but not always

It’s gotta a sensor that reads that stuff and it doesn’t know how long the vehicle is it’s trying to figure out the measurement of how long it is on the vehicle I’ve only been through a laser wash m5 360 and 360 plus

I’ve had a problem like this with soap on the whole car and without on the newer laser wash systems they can cause problems like this there could be a part in the machine going bad or if it hits something on a vehicle twice it shuts down the first time it resets what hits behind the vehicle and moves out more

The Brush got stuck in the back on the truck. There’s only one brush in there
