Anyways, since I admire your work and follow you thanks to Hoovie, can I once in a while HIT YU UP for technical advice on a very few things that I would try to do myself on my E430? They're not that expensive, especially if you get one that needs a bit of work. The soft close doors are common failures and aren't physically demanding to fix. The engine mounts are difficult to get to though. I have a black 2001 S430 with 168k miles so almost identical to the Wizards.
@andrewgonzalez40955 жыл бұрын
E430s are quite nice plenty of power and solid. They hardly have issues, I have a 2001 s430 its great but parts are a bit more pricey. There are a lot of things you can do to your car. Some maybe a bit difficult but depends on your skill and ability
@jcprov94815 жыл бұрын
Time is money, like in most businesses. Shops have massive overhead, keeping the lights on, running the books, stocking the parts, rags, rent, e.t.c. That is where that hour goes. Keeping the day to day operation moving right along. Good mechanics study in their down time, keeping up on the latest tech, perfecting their knowledge. A good mechanic is worth his time.

As a watchmaker there are a lot of parallels not only between watchmaking and automotive repair, but their industries. Estimating and charges are very similar. It may take me 2 minutes to properly change a battery, but I still charge you $20 because of the years of experience I have in knowing how to quickly and safely do it. Also our tools are expensive and availability of parts from some manufacturers can be very difficult (although I think watchmakers "win" that argument) 😜

Half of the guys in the dealership would be guessing, if anything go to a well respected aftermarket mechanic. If you go to someone who used to work for merc/specializes in euro stuff that would be ideal. Dealership techs are only educated on the cars being sold recently and there’s not a high likelihood on a 25 year old car that any of the techs were there during the period that car was new.

Completely agree regarding the labour hour charges. Also, the job may only take 10-20 minutes or whatever but the time taken getting the car on and off the ramps, cleaning up, parts disposal etc... Well.... It all adds up! Keep up the good work Car Wizard!!!
@ZanderKaneUK5 жыл бұрын
This not hate, I've subbed since Hoovie sent me here, please let this be a discussion not a dong waving contest! I don't 100% agree the with labour charge or the NASA analogy (as the guy/girl who invents the faster process is rarely the guy/girl who loose their job to that progress). Yes I understand labour comes from the "shop time bible" however if you complete a one hour twenty minute job in twenty minutes your customer should have the right to complain. And flashing on the screen that's what a "main franchise dealer does" doesn't really justify it either as it would be fair to say the wizard would have half the overhead. All that being said YES the wizard deserves to make $ just as much as the next guy but a more fair system would be to justify a minimum repair period, so you would pay a minimum of an hours labour. It would of benefit of both parties. I eagerly await your replies I think.
@Auto_Funk5 жыл бұрын
ZanderKaneUK I don’t think it’s hate, it’s a fair point to be honest :) the trouble is, thorough mechanics who care about doing a good job really are few and far between in my experience which is why I do all my own maintenance on my cars. I’ve been disappointed and let down too many times ! If a skilled guy did a perfect repair for me with great customer service I’d pay book time even if I knew the job was completed much quicker.

Years ago I purchased a cruise control kit from the dealer, asked how much to install it, 4 hrs. labor. I did it myself in less than 2 hours not knowing what I was doing. I suspect the dealer could have done it in an hour. No one likes to feel they've been ripped off unless the Wizard's customers are so wealthy they don't care. A lot of us have never been that wealthy. I'm will aware that the flat rate game is pretty much universal. A local guy l use doesn't play the game and has more business than he can handle. He must have another goal apart from getting rich. Then again maybe Ernie is getting rich. He can't be operating at a loss. I once ask if he was charging enough, being aware of how much a competitor charged, said he was satisfied.
