Car2Car Test demonstrates zero star double standard on vehicle safety

2 жыл бұрын

Launched on the eve of the first UN General Assembly High Level meeting on Road Safety in New York, Global NCAP announces the results of a dramatic car to car crash test today (28th) and demonstrates the double standards that apply to vehicle safety across national borders.
An Hyundai Grand i10 sedan sold in Mexico has been crashed into a comparable Hyundai Accent sold in the US. Both models are the cheapest sedans from the manufacturer that consumers can buy in their respective markets.*
The Hyundai Accent produced for the US market offers 6 airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard. However, the i10 model produced for Mexico and other Latin American markets is fitted with only two frontal airbags.
The protection the Accent offered to its driver during the crash test was good and the model showed a stable structure. The Grand i10 however showed an unstable structure and poor protection to the driver with a high probability of life-threatening injuries. The Hyundai sold in Mexico would be rated as a zero star car by Latin NCAP.

They don't follow double standards. They make better cars for more money and worse cars for less money. You want a car that costs HALF as much to be just as good? Well then you have a very low IQ and no clue about business, because that's impossible.

@@dineshy7532What are you yapping about? Forget about price, The Hyundai Accent falls under a higher segment of Sedans compared to Aura. It weighs a healthy 150-200 Kilos more so its obvious that it performed this way. Can give many real life examples for this. Would have made more sense if they tested the international Aura against the Indian Aura.

@prysp
@prysp 2 жыл бұрын
@@juancasidis4387 First go and compare the prices of the same car sold in Japan and in your country. The Japanese one would be more than double in price. Some companies do cost cutting in markets where the buying power of people is low or else they will not survive in the market as people will not be even able to buy their vehicles due to the prices. One example from India is Ford and Hyundai, both entered the markets at the same time, but Ford announced restructuring and shutting down of plants in September 2021, while Hyundai is the second most selling company in India. Why like this? Ford sold vehicles as they were sold in other countries, therefore they were more expensive, while Hyundai did some cost cutting, reduced the frame strength and safety features and made their vehicles cheaper. Another example is Škoda, Škoda was following a path similar to Ford but they started doing cost cutting and their sales increased by upto 3 times in 2022. However in some markets, people have a mentality that they are the best drivers out there, so they will not crash the car and thus the safety features are useless and a waste of money, and some legends prefer getting a sunroof instead of airbags. You cannot do anything with this unless the government makes vehicle safety regulations.

*I saw a meme yesterday -* Sigma male’s car - “No airbags, we die like real men!” I sent this in a Discord server, and after sometime, I got the following reply - “And if we survive, we suffer like real men!” If we edit this meme a bit, it would definitely match some markets like Indian, Pakistani, Nepali, Bangladeshi, etc.

If you lived in India, the Indian car standard is more than enough to cover the occupant in Indian crashes. In India, the majority of crashes happen in speed ranges of 5 to 35 miles per hour. Whereas in the US it happens at 40 to 65 miles per hour.

It is so obvious!!! With the per capita income on the lower side of the spectrum for India, people's priorities are different. Mileage matters! Consumers are price conscious. Thereby manufactures utilise this fact to provide sub standard cars. The media plays an important role too. With the youtube reviews focussing mostly on the geeky features and not on the overall safety of the vehicle. There are very few players like Honda / Tata / Mahindra who do not compromise on that. Education penetration also matters! It is high time people start giving importance to their life in the Indian sub continent.

In the original test, the Accent had a simulated crash with the obsticle which represents car of the same weight. Here, i10 is a one class lower car, so it is lighter, and presents lesser opponent to the Accent. So when Accent crahes into an i10, it provides better protection compared to say being crashed into a 2 ton SUV.

Should have done a model to model comparison, and not cheapest available to the cheapest available. As far as I can tell that Accent is really a Verna in our Indian market, which is priced higher than the Xcent that they used. Xcent is a cheaper car, and at least in my opinion, would fare lower than the Verna. So a real apples to apples comparison would have been, and I say this just based on how the car looks, Mexican made Accent (which they used here) vs Indian made Verna. Would have also liked to know what the price was for that Mexican made model, and how it compares to the Xcent used here (in converted currency or whatever but at least a comparable unit) Simply saying cheapest vs cheapest isn’t really sensible/logical now is it. Almost makes me wanna question everything from GNCAP 😂

The scariest part of this is the lack of ESC. That said, for everyone blaming the brands: get your governments to pass safety regulations that require ESC, etc, from every car sold in your country. And then be prepared to pay for the resulting more expensive cars.

Accent (US) vs Grand i10 (Mexico)? smaller model from Mexico.. why? This test should be performed with same model. It should be Accent (US) vs Accent (Mexico).

Global NCAP says one reason is the different types of regulations that exist in different countries. There’s also a huge difference in consumer priorities from country to country, which means automakers focus on different aspects of their products for the different regions. This can’t be an excuse, however, as life is no doubt the most important thing whenever on the planet you live.

One is hyundai compact sedan Aura and other is a sedan verna. With the price difference, ofcourse the verna is going to perform well be it any country. You could have used two same models from different countries. You hit a 1000pounder at same speed to a 800pounder, its a no brainer, the 800 pounder will have more damage. What are trying to highlight without equal test scenario?

It's the life of anyone, no matter where a person is driving. Why can't all countries have the same regulations where every on in the world gets the safest car. Kia Carens getting 3 start rating was very disappointing. The Bodyshell integrity of carens was unstable which I did not expect. Soo Sad

Aren't we also to look at cost of the car? The car sold in the Mexican market needs to achieve a certain price point which is surely lower than what is needed in America. Hence manufacturers need to produce cars accordingly. Steel strength, safety equipment and safety features offered will surely be different. Plus, the Accent is a full segment above the i10. Of course it will stand up better to impact.

If you have got little bit of sense, you should have used same cars, because it was usa border vs mexico border safety test... for, example accent vs accent or grand i10 vs grand i10 rather than doing accent vs grand i10..

Mostly car manufacture's are doing the same in other country as well, Car/SUV build quality for our country are also poor. Few due to Global NCAP initiative changing, but still major car manufactures are making very weak product for more mileage. Govt must take strict action against these car manufactures and should not be allowed. Buyer also need to understand built quality and safety how much its important their own life.
