Wouldn't you take less engine damage if you tapped them on the side rather than rear-ending all of the cars? It would be a bit more dangerous for things that rocket the cars forward like the "gas pedal jammed at maximum", but it would be less dangerous for things that make the car quickly lose momentum like "all joints become detached".
