My 2015 SR5 Hilux was plagued with issues, clunky tail shaft, warped breaks, hand break that never worked, 2 leaking water pumps, transmission computer died leaving me stranded and massive DPF issues, oh what a fucking feeling!. I bought a new work mate. It shat the gear box it was covered under warranty. After that, I sold it to my mate and the engine overheated and killed it. Required a new engine. He was towing a relatively light load. Nothing against Toyota at all but they do have flaws.

I’m looking to buy a Ute soon and recently borrowed a 17 year old Hilux with nearly 300k. I took it light off roading as well as 10-12 hours drives, with over 2k in total. Despite its age and mileage, I did not experience a single issue. I wouldn’t have the same trust in a Ford and certainly don’t believe all these complicated electronics will stand the test of time but I’m open to hear otherwise.

I have taken delivery of a V6 Wildtrak with premium pak. Had to wait longer for that option. I will lift the suspension and add 33 inch AT tyres and go back to a 17 inch rim to do that. At present, average around town fuel consumption in 4A mode is 10.2 lts/100km. Highway cycle is 9.9 lts/100km. I will be removing the roller shutter to fit a canopy, front and rear TJM bars, 150 litre long range fuel tank, cargo roller floor to set up as a tourer. I must say the LED matrix lights are fantastic. Best headlights of any car I have owned, just brilliant and no need to add other light bars, they are that good. Good job Ford.

Average fuel consumption for my Hilux is 12.5 ltrs/100. Now that's carrying a constant 400kgs in the back. Plus, long-range fuel tank and bullbar. Mine does nothing but country driving with very little town work. Put the 3.5 ton trailer on the back, and it blows out to 18 to 22 litres per 100 wind dependant. As for engine noise, yes, it's there as is bad wind noise. Put the Lovell suspension upgrade in the Hilux, and it makes the world of difference tows nicer and better planted on different surfaces. Yes, it's showing its age now compared to the newer utes, but with less electronics to go wrong, it's more bush proof, plus every farm or station has a hilux somewhere hiding so finding parts is not really a problem outback. It's a proven platform compared to the ranger, which is still plagued with problems . Took a new v6 ranger for a decent drive the other day. Yes, while the engine is good, the electronics in the car were way to over powering and off putting. Plus, the salesperson said they were still having issues with the gearbox and a few other areas. Toyota's aftersales are far better than Fords as well. For me, Toyota, for the win still. Newer is not always better. Will be interesting to see the 2024 Hilux upon release.

One day at a time 😊 I hope you still alive in 2024. You will rather wait for Toyota to catch up rather than acknowledge the future is already here. Your assessment that newer is not always better is contradicted by you waiting for the new release in 2024. Also you admit that Hilux is only better after a suspension upgrade. Be real mate, Hilux today is outclassed by many of its competitors. The only arguments Hilux fanboys have is past reputation and future aspirations. In my humble opinion; one does not measure current success or failure on the past or the future but in the now, as you live one day at a time❤

Its going to be interesting to see if Hilux keeps its market share. This model isn’t being updated until 2025 and it’s already lacking in a few areas particularly comfort. It will need to contend with the new Ranger/Amarok which will probably be ready for a mid cycle update by 2025 and the new triton/navara. Most people change their cars every 4-5 years now days while still in warranty, negating to an extent Toyota’s reliability advantage and buyers from 25-45 tend to gravitate more towards better tech these days. Going to be a hard slog for Hilux.

there are two models under the hilux badge, the 2wd fleet job for $35k and the 4x4 private buyers get like the SR5 which have high margin. Toyota sell heaps of 2wd but fewer 4x4, like under 20% of their sales. The ranger is opposite, they sell tonnes of high margin XLT and Wildtrak and now Raptor, but much fewer fleet sales. Essentially they would be making 2-3x the dollars toyota gets from sales even being number 2, hence the sticker package rogue etc. Next hilux I'm sure they'll go all out and try and get that sweet upper margins

Good review, funny about the 10 speed getting confused, I have a 2021 wildtrak bi turbo 10 speed and it is not perfect but I do not experience the confusion comments, you need to drive extremely softly to use every gear it will jump from 1st to3rd to5th then sequentially after that, that is how it is tuned, never had an issue, accelerate vigorously and gear changes are different again. I test drove the 300LC 10speed and look it acted very very similarly. The new ranger in bi turbo refuses to skip gears unless you give it a real nudge. I hear a bit from the old school people Not old people, complain about the new tech including the 10 speed transmissions perhaps one day they will evolve

I have a Ford Ranger 2019 and really wanted to love the vehicle as its technology, comfortability and luxury is far superior than the Hilux. However, my 2019 now has 35000km on, the load bin started cracking after its first gravel road on less than 10000km, after fitting a bushtech canopy by preferred installers and professionals it just got worse, now currently travelling through Botswana this vehicle is shaking itself and my wallet to pieces and today even the electronics started acting up. This is a 4x4 Dcab 10speed and i love the gearbox in the sand. However, it still stays unreliable and will not last. I almost cancelled halve my trip due to this unreliability, but paid good money for it, so will soldier on. Sadly to say, as soon as i get back to South Africa this vehicle will be stripped, fixed and traded for a Toyota. Now i will have to face my Toyota friends after advocating for this vehicle. Ford doesn’t want to take responsibility nor the canopy manufacturer. I see now with the newer models that you need to purchase load bin reinforcing at over R3000.00 which indicates that Ford knows that their load bins are weak. At a price tag of over R850k you shouldn’t have to purchase reinforcing brackets. Please test all aspects on comparison of these vehicles before reviewing it. Ford is capable, but not reliable. Have a wonderful day all.

I'm sure even the new dmax will still come on top of Toyota. Of course we will say let's wait for 2024 to see what Toyota brings but that's pointless because Ford will also have updated their utes by that time. Battle lines? No. The Ranger is great.... but there are so many reported issues, Ford has been a complete dick about communicating and addressing. Ford Australia has over a WEEK lag time between submitting an online enquiry and receiving a response. A WEEK wait and ZERO phone support. Disgusting. Every Ford Dealership I visited (5 in total!) gave me terrible service and support and were frankly disinterested in helping me. Needless to say I cancelled my V6 Wildtrak order and purchased a Rogue. Best. Decision. Ever. Ford needs to get it's shit together. Oh and also.... it was pretty poor form to sell a "top of the range" Wildtrak to people who then waited 6 months only to have a higher model released while they waited, thereby devaluing their vehicle before they even received it. Fuck that.

Here the price difference between those 2 specifically is close to 30%(Bulgaria, Eastern Europe). Individual orders will take in both cases 1 year realistically. The real choice between them will be decided by what is available in stock locally as well by the pricing. Spare parts and parts delivery speed is way better for Toyotas around here. Accessories are plentiful and available for the older vehicle. We have way more shops capable of working on Toyota, than Ford. I feel, that with those type of vehicles concerns such as these should be weighed as well. Ford has poor reputation for reliability and Toyota has exactly the opposite. The Ford is packed with features, which is really nice, but the engines and the reliability is yet to be tested. Previous gen Lion V6 is notorious in Land Rover for snapping the crank in 2. In my case, the price diff and availability made my decision easy -> Hilux. I would trade in a bit of tech for reliability every day. For me this is a daily driver/long range family vehicle and being without a car for weeks is not an option so the perceived reliability of the Hilux is reassuring.
