Yes ma'am, have done that for many decades, a pinch of salt to the grounds will take the bitter out, not just coffee, but tea as well. I make my youngin's do the taste test.

We grew up in FL and my grandmother used to put salt in the coffee. I remember the first time I tasted it! YUK! It left a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended) and I have never tried it again!

Yes Ma'am, especially when you do your coffee in a perk stove top, it does cut down on the bitter, and yes it was passed on down the ages and ages.

2:25 I have learned to keep a bowl of ice water nearby when I make jam. If I get a splash of sugary hot stuff on me, I plunge my hand into the ice water before my skin is seriously damaged. (I think this is a tip I saw or read from Martha Stewart; at any rate it is not my original idea.) 8:26 Most jam recipes specify 1/4" headspace. Why do you need more for this type?

Is the salt added for the sole purpose of reducing the bitterness of the coffee? We drink Kona coffee and it is not bitter at all. Should I leave the salt out? Thanks, I will definitely make this one, as my family and I loved the caramel apple pie jam so so much :)

Pretty much all coffee, tea, wines, some juices and such have something called tannins in them. In coffee and tea it can give off a bitter aftertaste but if Kona coffee is not bitter to you just leave it out. Its purely a taste thing. Also with coffees and teas, the older they are the more bitter that taste can become. Ever notice the difference in taste between ground coffee and coffee beans you grind yourself? That bitterness becomes more pronounced the staler they are.
