I love the design of this pen so much, I have the ballpoint pen version that I got at a flea market years ago. I hope I can add this to my pen case, I honestly think it would make the perfect fountain pen for me.

I love fountain pens! I miss using them in school! I still have my Lamy Abc Fountain Pen from when I was in elementary school in Germany! (It was weird that elementary schools in the USA used pencils and ballpoint pens. Culture shock, I guess.) It's ages old and still works well! Sketching with fountain pen is super fun. I'm sure this Caran d'Ache Ecridor fountain pen will last you forever as well!
@owingsart8 жыл бұрын
+starshinesoldier Thank you for the note! Yes, I think Americans viewed the fountain pens as antiquated, at least in the schools, so it fell out of favor as a writing instrument. I think teaching children how to use these would be a great opportunity to talk about the history of writing. - Marty

Great video, thanks for sharing. My brother bought me a 316 multifunction ballpoint for my 50th. As with yours it's a sizeable chunk in your hand, with a really nifty, cleverly engineered mechanism. The colour of the ballpoint that comes out (red, blue or black) depends on which way it's facing. If the red dot is facing you when you press the actuator, then you get the red one, black, the black one and of course blue, the blue one.

Wow, sounds cool. I like the multi-color functionality.

My mother taught me from when I was very young how important your signature is, and that it should have character. She's an artist and very big on encouraging me to always sign my work, because even the 'fails' along the way are part of the journey, and something to be proud of, because only I could have made that specific drawing or painting. Consequently, I have a very distinct signature. It's just my first name with a flourish, but it's very _me_. I also have a signature with just initials - because with some pieces a full signature would shift the focus of the drawing - and that, too, is recognisably me. :) [I have to admit, though, that with online posts I edit my signature out, as I don't necessarily want it in the public domain.]
@owingsart8 жыл бұрын
That's great to hear about your mother, she was obviously a smart woman! Yeah, I left some unique changes off my signature in the video so if anyone tries it, I'll be able to identify it at a glance. Have a great day!!!! - Marty

Hi Marty, i'm glad to see you reviewing a fountain pen! I love stationary as much as art supply and i share your thoughts about a person's signature! After i had left school i stopped writing with a fountain pen for quite a long time but since some years i'm using a fountain pen again; a Faber Castell Ambition. Not as pricey as your new precious purchase but it looks nice and works very well. Recently i joined the Letter Writers Alliance based in Chicago. A handwritten letter is always something special. I wish you much joy with your wonderful fountain pen!

I’ve had this pen for 2 or 3 years now and it’s still the best one I’ve ever tried. I tried similarly priced Conklin and the twisbi vac and this pen is a smooth as silk in a medium. I managed to get it for £100 before the current price hike of £165 so can’t really compare it with this new price pens.

@@owingsartstill using the pen almost every day at university, originally bought by my grandpa who’s sadly died now, still the smoothest nib I’ve used and has a good balance in hand. Palladium finish has held up well with a few small scratches otherwise still beautiful. I intend to keep it forever now, but was considering changing out the plastic feed for an ebony wood one. Otherwise the Uk price is now an extortionate £275 much higher than the hundred my grandpa paid. 5 star pen though in my opinion

Way to go Owen. Before becoming bed bound many years ago I was always asked to write things to varying degrees because of neat writing and I absolutely love fountain pens, so this would be a must for me a few years ago as a good pen is essential if you are in the writing industry in any manner. Lifetime Guarantee too, and $300 isn't that bad for a pen that will last a lifetime! At least it isn't the Caran D'ache rose gold Caelograph fountain pen, Zenith 4 at a cost of £92,000 GBP!!!! 😳🙈

Hey Marty, I recently bought three Lamy Safari pens, a demonstrator, an apple green, and a dark lilac. What fun they are! I filled the demonstrator with Noodler's Lexington Gray ink (waterproof), which looks just like pencil lead for sketching. One is for waterproof black for line and wash, and the other is filled with the LE Lamy dark violet ink (tragically no longer available), the most gorgeous purple ever. It's inspirational to try new art supplies. When I saw your fountain pen video, it was just a matter of time . . . Thanks for sharing! You have a nice hand. Fountain pens make you want to write your best for sure.

I own a few Caran d'Ache pens, both fountain and ball point - mainly ball point I must confess as I've collected them since I was 16 years old - it's not often I get to add to the collection lately. The Ecridor fountain pen is a beautiful pen - I love mine (like yours, it's a Chevron). I tend to write with with the cap posted - makes it a little heavier but I like the balance. Caran d'Ache's writing tools are gorgeous. Nothing would persuade me to swap a Caran d'Ache for any other brand.
@owingsart8 жыл бұрын
Hi Teresa - Are the ballpoints made as well as the fountain pens? I just love the feel and balance of this pen. I'd been saving for a while to buy this pen and I'm so happy with it so far. Great to hear from you. - Marty
@TreasaLynch8 жыл бұрын
+Owings Art Hi Marty. Yes, their ballpoints are as well made as the fountain pens. They've a bunch of price points so you'll get a reasonably decent every day model 849 for 20E or so and they are lovely for the money. I have a few. They have some limited edition 849s for around 40 euro as well which are nice pens too - decent entry to the brand in my opinion. My first CdA pen was an Ecridor ballpoint and it was a gorgeous pen. It went its own way about 20 years ago but I replaced it as soon as I had the money to do so - the ball point Ecridors cost less than the fountain pens but they are still not everyday purchases for most people. The CdA pens take a CdA refill - it will fit the Ecridor ball points and the 849 pens and they are great ball point refills which last quite a while.
@owingsart8 жыл бұрын
Treasa Lynch That's great info Treasa, thank you for sharing that with me. I wasn't aware of the 849's in any detail. Not cheap, but it sounds like they are worth the money and that they last. Do you know if CdA only take CdA refills or can you get other brands, less expensively? Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to these higher end pens. :-)
@TreasaLynch8 жыл бұрын
+Owings Art I'm only going to say that prior to being able to get Goliath refills where I was living I may have put a Parker refill in once or twice. I've been told it's not really recommended. The thing is, the CdA refills tend to last a good long time so in my experience, it's worth using them. I go years without replacing them. I just looked on amazon to see how much the refills are in the US and am surprised to see that they are comparatively expensive but then I suppose European stuff probably is a bit more expensive over your way.
@owingsart8 жыл бұрын
Treasa Lynch Thank Treasa. I am going to stick with the CdA then based on your recommendation. They are expensive here, but that's cool because I appreciate the quality. Thank you for the great advice! - Marty

I know! I know!! I'm late to the rodeo!! LOL What a beautiful pen!! I have to agree that it is sad that the newer generations of kids aren't being taught cursive writing in school! Seems that the days of being complimented on your hand writing are fading into the past. Is cursive writing becoming the new calligraphy?? With email and some form of instant messaging, the art of actually putting a stamp on an envelope, old fashion letter writing is fading away as well! Sad! There is just something so special when writing with a fountain pen, almost regal if you will! I use both fountain and dip pens for my letter writing (I ain't going down without a fight!! lol) and journaling. It amuses me that I am often asked about my pen as I'm sitting in a cafe' writing letters or journaling, especially when it's a young whipper snapper asking about it..."Is that a new style of pen just coming out?"..."how does it work??". Ahhhh...these young-ins today and their tap screen keyboards! LOL
