9:17 that letter is a "ス" (su), which combined with the "キ"(ki) one she gave him when they were baking choco in Yamada's appartment, makes "スキ"(suki) or "I like/love you", and she cut the "ス"　in a way that if you look upside down, looks like a heart.

@@bastomihuda the thing is giving a chocolate with "suki" in any way is the most classic way of confession, thats why its quite likelly this is the case. and even Ichikawa keeps phrasing "Yamada... [blank]'s me..." which only "likes/loves" would fill...

Well, it's katakana, not hiragana, so I would think "kisu" (kiss) is more likely than "suki"

@@geekley that doesnt mean anything in this regard. it's a playwords, they do this all the time. And giving a chocolate saying just "kiss" is too much of a generic thing and wouldnt mean much (like when Ichikawa gave a Melty Kiss chocolate, Yamada liked, but it was not a confession equivalent). Yamada was designing those 2 letters since the choco making day as it was shown, and with the whole "making it clear giving the chocolate", really wouldnt make sense.

@@shin-iti Yeah that was how I read it in the manga as well. Yamada gave it out of order but only because the "ki" was part of the "obligatory" design that they were putting on the chocolate as a group before

When Yamada gets the coffee from the vending machine she actually wasn't "gambling" she remembered that on their date Ichikawa ordered a black coffee and said he didn't like sweet things, she simply used it as an excuse to buy him something.

She envies Hara because she can be honest and express her feelings, something she can't do because of how insecure she is and because she partly never knows what ichikawa is thinking, she thinks if she goes too fast she might ruin things.

9:14 I love that the japanese dub is "Yamada boku wo ... (suki da is implied)" that can be translated as "Yamada ... (likes is implied) ... me" and the subtitles are "Yamada likes...", so when you know enough of japanese the title is completed.

Fun Fact: Meiji MeltyKiss is one of the popular brands of chocolates in Japan. Interestingly, this episode was also aired several weeks before Valentine's day so this is actually a very genius product placement. And yes, Ichikawa verbally shanking Pickup-senpai shows how he grew up since the first we meet him.

Adachi kills me this episode, most of all because he's low-key RIGHT, for a change. For middle school boys, the concept of obligation chocolate had to be FRUSTRATING.

One of my favorite parts of this episode is how much Yamada is clearly struggling to be forthright with Ichigo (edit: meant Ichikawa, of course, but leaving my shame intact), showing she's just as nervous and shy as he is, in her own way, though she often seems much more bold. Just like with her roundabout way to try to exchange Line info, she's always trying to do things indirectly, and it never works with Ichigo since he's never going to take the hint, even when he should. All the little signs of Yamada being nervous (like chattering about nothing) are so adorable.

This ep really rides the line of how annoyingly dense Ichikawa can be while still being bearable because of how cute Yamada is, lol. Like goddamn dude, how much does she need to beat you over the head with how much she loves you? Also at 12:10 Ichikawa was lowkey insulting Adachi, pretty much saying that Ichikawa's learning what NOT to do by listening to him

Being willfully dense is the same as being dense. He got it and he still responded like the signs weren't 100% clear. Put yourself in Yamada's shoes and you'll get why she starts crying - the effort is all on her end and Ichikawa still doesn't respond right. I'm current with the manga and I know that at this point in the story Ichikawa still holds himself back but the difference between the evidence in front of his eyes and what he chooses to believe is so freaking huge that it starts to become unrealistic.

​@@hyteclowlifeIchikawa literally told yamada that he wouldn't know if someone didn't tell him directly which is yamada fault that she keep playing with those little hint and didn't tell him directly but that's fine and such realistic depiction for middle school kids that trying to know the meaning of love & liking someone. Ichikawa is just overthinking kids that has inferiority complex that's why sometimes he chose not to believe when something is happen to him. He's not even dense.
