These are some great points Derek. Thanks for the vlog. One mistake I made was feeling the need to trade and sell. Now I have traded some 10k plus watches for 3k prices that I love.

Buy what you love. For me I am drawn to vintage watches in the 36mm range. There's just something very classy and gent about them.

agree with most of your points! i don't understand the obsession with larger case sizes? I think people should just pick watches that fit their wrist sizes well. I love dress watches below 38mm as I find them more elegant, but it's so hard to find dress watches at that size these days. Thinking of buying vintage but I'm also worried about the movement's condition and service costs

Nice video Mr. Mon. I spoke to you the other day about a SLGA007 purchase of which you didn't have! One thing to remember, many of us have only limited funds to purchase. Yes, a watch has to speak to you BUT one must limit the ROI loss on any given watch as much as we can. We all have been burned by the 6-8K purchase that 6 months later we decide to part with and the value is 50%! It's happened with very big brands and models to me. I am a big fan of researching brands and models that at the very least have a tendency to hold their retail price if sold. We all know those brands. So it's twofold for me, it has to speak to you and it needs to hold as much value as possible.

The reason for men’s and ladies watches is because in general the sexes want to differentiate themselves from one another. It’s not that they can’t wear the same watch, it’s that they want to stand out from each other.

Yep, gender neutral marketing of watches won't sell as many units, period. We go to jewelry, watches, clothing, etc. to accentuate our style and our looks. 99% of men want to look masculine and 99% of women want to look feminine. For those who don't, yeah don't let people stop you from buying outside your marketed gender

Respect the QUARTZ!!! Most accurate stand alone watches in the world and nearly decimated the mechanical watch industry in the 1970s!!! But I love all watches and that goes to your point...BUY WHAT YOU LIKE! Great video as always!

Easy to not worry about resale when you're not worried about the potential loss of value. Some people can only afford to buy high end watches that are likely to hold a fair portion of their value. I fully agree with the point though, that being said. I buy watches assuming I'll almost certainly never be selling them.

Thanks for the tips. I think why people are not into quartz simply because they don't want to change battery, and they want something that can just continue to work. Yes mechanical also need servicing, especially lubrication after years of running. Also I think people are more into mechanical simply because they want to go back to old tradition of the watch. Just like people want old classic cars. If they want something technology advanced they can use their phone or gshock for more accurate time telling. I guess by the end of the day everyone has his or her own style to choose.

My advice would be to keep a watch list in which you write in bullet points what a watch NEEDS to comply to AT THE TOP. Sometimes you see a great watch and you want to add it to your list. But later on you think “Wait. This doesn’t a-line with what I actually look for in a watch. Keep your list and review it every week. DON’T BUY YET. Give it a long time because I will guarantee you that some of the watches won’t stay on your list forever. Good luck!

@@MinuteMon That sounds like fun! Here are the criteria my watches should comply with: 1. From a brand that gets you excited and proud to own. 2. A watch that lasts a lifetime. 3. A watch that you will have no controversial feelings/ideas about. I am not sure if I can enjoy owning a Rolex knowing that they will probably not want me as their customer. 4. Not a boring design/color. 5. Not a substitution for another watch. Don't buy a Royal Oak lookalike if you really wany a Royal Oak. 6. You can afford it. 7. A watch that you are 100% certain of keeping for the rest of your life. 8. A watch that you would proudly show/pass down to your children. 9. You have held the watch on your list for at least a month and have seen multiple reviews on. 10. A watch that you will wear often enough. I really like th VC Overseas but I already know I would be too scared to wear it. Therefore, I rather use that 20 grand to buy a few other watches that I also really love and would wear.

Hmm...I'm confused on the limited edition part of the video. Is the avoidance because of the elevated price for the ltd edition when you can get the same watch in a standard version for less? An example might be the new GS Kirazuri dialed SBGW273, 275, and 277 compared to the SBGW231 cream dial. Same dimensions and handwound movement. This conflicts me because I really like those kirazuri dials. Its just hard to choose between the 3 colors.

Thanks for asking! For me I’m making a personal rule to myself to not just focus on Limited Editions or that “status” to what makes a watch special in my collection. I’m not discouraging those who only buy LEs but to keep an open mind for the standard stuff too that can often be overlooked or sleeper hits. Some of my favorite watches turned out to be the pieces that I become everyday companions and not worry that it’s limited or that sort of thing
@markn3586
@markn3586 2 жыл бұрын
@@MinuteMon Thanks. That makes a lot of sense. Early on I chased some limited editions. Not so much anymore. I'm more interested in watches that really "sing" to me by ticking as many boxes that I feel a watch should be. That being said, if I had a chance between the GS SBGW231 and the SBGW277 I would say that both fit the bill because everything is identical with the exception of the dials. I think the green dial makes it a more casual every day watch. However, the cream dial is casual if I just adorn it with a brown gator strap.

Honestly it’s difficult to not care about resale value. After all, watches are luxury items and nobody wants to lose too much when they need the money.
@glassisking
@glassisking 2 жыл бұрын
If losing some money on a luxury watch would seriously impact your financial well-being, then you can't afford the watch in the first place. That's the whole point of it being a "luxury". There's nothing wrong with sticking with a price tier that you are comfortable with, and then you can enjoy the watch for what it is and not be a worry wart.

A well made mechanical watch can theoretically last forever. A quartz watch will eventually break down and there won't be replacement parts in the future. Plus, watch collecting is completely an emotional driven hobby and Quartz does not bring me any sense of satisfaction at all
