I'll estimate that 90% of divers don't get wet. 9% were once used to go snorkeling or scuba diving on vacation or are taken in to the pool just because they can be. Like 1% are actually dove with.

Aren't all Datejusts regardless of age 36mm?? Is that a "boy size?" Daytjust II or Datejust 41 are the only allowable size?? Nonsense. I do think, however, the broader lug thickness of the modern Datejust (36mm) wears perfectly. Great vid!!

yeah, many watch reviewers try to impart their opinion regarding smaller vintage and even newer watches. they try to shame you for liking the absurdly huge new 0.3 mm larger submariner, when i struggle to tell the difference between the new and old model.

I like how this video put things in perspective. I bought 8 watches in 2018. It is now mid-2019 and so far i bought only 1 watch (an oris 65). I am at that point where i try to buy only that "speak" to me, even if there are other watches as good or better.

Good pickup on that Oris 65 and good on you for slowing down. The Oris 65 (Ref. 013377074064-0782018) speaks to me but it falls in that price range that I’m currently avoiding. I’m looking to get the Tudor Black Bay and perhaps another watch in the $3K range, before coming back down to Oris, etc. Hopefully it will work out.

I can recognise a number of things. Your personality (resistance to marketing of luxury brands) will decide whether you will keep on liking watches for what they are, or whether you will grow into snobbery and want a certain luxury brand. Personally my watch collecting path has turned completely towards vintage.

This video should be included in the high school curriculum. I just recently got into this watch collecting thing few months ago. I have never been interested in superfluous things nor was I ever an ambitious man. My interests has always been finding out why are we even on this earth. But we desire all things of beauty, though what defines beauty is quite subjective. Watch combines art and vanity, the two often go hand in hand. Fast forward few months, I'm already on the thought process of getting 1 or 2 grail pieces and be done with it. But then I question the purpose of grail. I've seen people stay in budget collection for years. If life is just an experience, then all emotions are part of the experience. You may feel bad about amassing cheap Seikos, homages, fashion watches. On a broader sense, the realization and the regret is also part of the experience. You may go through life as a king or a beggar, if you haven't figured out the why, the end is the same.

I have to say you have hit the nail on the head and driven it into the timber with one blow. Yesterday I purchased my first Rolex. After spending crazy amounts of money and 45 watches later I now realise that I should have brought the Rolex first and be done with the whole chasing game. While it has been fun it has also been exhausting . Maybe it is not about the destination but the thrill of the journey . Keep making great videos we all love them.

@rob gee I have the 2019 omega Seamaster pro as well, and a 2018 Rolex Submariner date. Omega is fantastic and maybe superior in some technical aspects, just best value for money today in my opinion. But the Rolex is just at another level. Only way to explain is to have one and live with it. I know it’s double the cost, but if you can swing it and or get your hands on one, I believe it’s worth it. Nonetheless I hope you enjoy your watches to the fullest. Cheers!

@@markgads8017 I wish i was enjoying the new smp300. The lume pip was the wrong colour. Noticed on the same day I brought her home. Took a 1 month battle with omega to have them replace the bezel. It came back to me with the bezel misaligned. I wasn't very happy. Called the service centre again and they said it's within their specification. Messaged omega in swiss direct and they have agreed to replace the watch with a new one or something with the same value. Very poor QC that I have experienced.

I tried the Explorer 1 on my wrist and it’s hard to explain but I wasn’t as excited to see it on my wrist as when I put on a Tudor Black Bay. Perfect video, Sir. Loved the dig at Christian Zeron at the end hahaha Fortunately for me, I stopped myself from entering Phase 3: Accumulation, after reading comments and advice on KZbin. Almost jumped on the “tick all the boxes” bandwagon but woke up. You’re right about the $1,000 - $2,000 watches. That is the Danger Zone!!! Avoid at all costs. I started paying attention to the higher tier watches. I tried on the Tudor Black Bay Heritage with burgundy bezel a few times and decided it’s the watch for me, so I will hold off on buying watches until I get it.

I think on this scale, I'm still in "Phase 2," I've been collecting for about a year and a half now, and haven't spent more than $350 on a single watch, I'm eying Seikos, Hamiltons and Lacos. It's funny, I'm just getting ready to shoot on this same topic, I've got my notes all written out, but I think I see it from a different perspective. I think some guys can live happily in any of these "phases," without necessarily progressing through all of them. I'm thinking in terms of three different kinds of collectors with three different goals.

@@eyeheartsushi2212 It's tempting to go that route, but I have two qualms. First, it'd take me about 2 years to save up to buy a Tudor, and that's basically if I didn't buy anything watch related during that time, which doesn't sound like that much fun. Second, I'm not really sure how I'd feel about wearing a luxury watch out in public, or spending that kind of cash on something like that. Honestly the only way I'd consider buying a luxury watch would be if my channel really took off to the point where I could buy one from the ad revenue, which again, I'm a long ways off from that.

Spot on. The challenge here is that the cycle repeats. I started selling watches for the first time to have a balanced and wearable collection, Omega, Rolex. Got rid of all the redundant and inexpensive pieces, started wearing the ones that weren’t getting wrist time. And then, microbrand again, same excuse as before. “It’s just a few hundred and I don’t really have spec beast beater”. And then another “a field and a diver and that’s it”.

Take homes; Get a Rolex asap (made a difference to my watch view once I did - i'm now 2 coming on 3 deep). Save up for the watches you really want (and take the time to understand what that truly is), aim high, bide your time and have patience - 'placeholders' are a waste of money In the long run.

This is all true but unless you can afford a $2k+ watch I wouldn't buy one. Even still, I can buy a $2k+ watch but I can't imagine wearing one in my daily life, it's so out of place to have something that expensive on my wrist. I'd say find the one or two quality watches in your price range and go for those. For me, around $500 is probably the most in comfortable with wearing.

Indeed sounds familiar. I think the phases sometimes even return, but surely the path usually goes up the price tag - maybe until you realize that satisfaction in life does not correspond with your watch collection. Only thing I disagree on is the fact that you need to own a Rolex. If you like them and you have no problem with the image this watch has in many social communities, go for it. If you want to retain value - go for it. If you simply do not like the brand, style or pricetag - buy what you like. There are many nice alternatives for the watch enthusiast.

Jeffrey Bowden I realized the hobby is more fun when one pretends Rolex doesn’t exist. I’ll deal with Rolex in a decade or so, hahaha.

Eye Heart Sushi l like the product, but not the whole supply issue or the value retention obsession. Being a never seller, what it might bring down the line has little relevance, but the up front experience is just not fun.

Shit, I'm in the escalation phase lol. My dad gave me a Breitling which was like a Trojan horse. It was an awesome timepiece but not my style. I traded up and added in some for a Tudor BB. I'm getting a Rolex next year for sure. Glad I jumped right into the mid tear though, I can see how Seikos can be addictive.

Tongue and cheek...you bet. But, you bring up a very good point. My advice is to buy really cheap to learn and then buy quality. My goal is to have at least 4 high quality watches I enjoy but are keepers that I can leave to my 4 boys someday. My first premium watch is going to be a Grand Seiko. The finishing blows away Rolex by a mile. The challenge is that they do not have a model that speaks to me. The Snowflake in blue, ref. SBGA407SA , is the closest so far, but not quite there. I want it on a titanium case and bracelet like the white Snowflake.

Thanks for the great content! Is the Polish letter in the video title intentional or a result of your French keyboard?

Hi Uptickwatchreviews! How do you related this video with the those where you shows your Maurice Lacroix Aikon? (specially the 2nd video). I mean, do you think that to buy a Maurice Lacroix Aikon could be also a mistake? Because on that video you said that you maybe could even prefer the ML than your Omega Aquaterra, so... I was wondering if the ML Aikon would be a wrong/stupid option or if it is really a watch that values its money. What do you think about it? Do you think that, instead of buying a ML Aikon would be better saving for a Omega, Rolex, Hublot or... Any of those more expensive luxury watches? Thank you very much in advance for your anwswer and keep the good working that your are doing by making this videos! :)

I can’t deny I enjoy my Rolexes a little out of snobbery. With the Aikon, snobbery is out the window as it’s clearly not as luxurious and hyped as AP. I can enjoy it purely out of pleasure, just because it fits me. There’s a certain jubilation to own something just because it pleases you. Having said that, I’m sure tons of people by now love the Aikon and other ML models. They do things right and nothing in their products feels cheap, not even in terms of accuracy. That also is refreshing in a climate of overpriced steel sport watches.

Blaine Cole Well I change my mind time to time, but my feeling is that Rolex makes great, but overpriced, watches. I *might* buy one someday, but will continue exploring others brands, first.
