One reason to put second skin all over the floor is to reduce heat in older V8 cars. I used their "Firewall Thermal Coating" along with the Damplifier Pro and it dropped the trans tunnel form 160 degrees to 78 degrees (which was room temperature).

Second Skin Insulation ...isn't mlv supposed to work with a foam under it to keep a gap or from the mlv touching the surface you are isolating it from?
@SecondSkinAudio8 жыл бұрын
Yes double deckersoulwrecker you would want to have at least a 1/8" Closed Cell Foam (CCF)layer between the metal or foil top and the Mass Laded Vinyl (MLV) to decouple the air waves and keep the hard surfaces from creating noise. This is not our build, but Mark is a very talented installer in the industry so I am sure there was a good reason for this application (usually it is because of clearance restrictions on carpet re-apply in cars likes Porsche and Prius) and every single build is different and requires different strategies. This very reason is why we created the Luxury Liner Pro over 15 years ago which has the CCF infused onto the MLV already and will not separate and is so much easier to install then doing CCF and MLV separately.

I took some of the ideas from Gary Bigg's Regal using lead and fiberglass to stiffen and add mass. Instead of expensive Cascade lead septum, I used 1/64 lead sheets to the under foot area's applying with butyl rubber roofing adhesive. But like him I used lead shot with fiberglass and 3 layers of Noico sound deadening, which I concluded just as good as Dynamat Extreme in my subwoofer enclosure.

It would have been nice to see a before and after noise level measurement. I'd hate to spend several hours doing this and not getting significant improvement in noise reduction. Looks like all of this will add to the weight of the vehicle but I wonder if that's a significant issue with gas mileage.
@NihadH5 жыл бұрын
You said that you remove the OEM CLD material from the panels, but you stick your CLD sheets straight over the OEM CLD material (the yellowish layer in that car) all over the floor? Also, what about the principle of 25-50% panel surface coverage for the CLD layer? You did not mention it and I do not see you practicing it in this instance. You went for the 100% coverage. Why so?
@actionjackson19715 жыл бұрын
Can't speak for Mark, but for CLD on my car's floor, I just did a tap test and applied to areas that needed it the most. I even had to apply it right over the factory deadening b/c it wasn't doing a good job. I ended up covering up to 80% of my floor b/c it needed it the most.
@NihadH5 жыл бұрын
ActnJksn If my thinking is correct, factory CLD layer should be removed first, because if it has weak (invisibly delaminated) connection with the panel, it will nullify the effect of any new CLD layers on top of it. However I have not yet found an easy way to remove that dreaded factory bitumen crap.
@actionjackson19715 жыл бұрын
@@NihadH I would've needed a few extra days to try to remove the factory deadening alone. I applied the CLD over it, then a layer of CCF for 100% coverage. I have some MLV on order so I may apply that over everything.
@margincall74 жыл бұрын
I just apply CLD all over the OEM CLD. It's not like it's going to cause any problems. As for the 20-30% coverage, I am OCD, so I tend to go for 70% or so, especially on flat areas that are prone to vibrating as opposed to curved ones. CLD is so cheap these days, that even 100% coverage is nothing, really. My concern was why this video showed way less than even 90% coverage of MLV, which is the key aspect of full sound deadening. Even a tiny crack could negate the entire MLV effort.

@margincall74 жыл бұрын
It's not possible to compete with luxury cars designed for quiet interior cabins by doing sound deadening stuff like this. A significant amount of exterior noise is avoided by luxury cars through specific acoustic glass and various glass thicknesses, dampening of the suspension parts where they connect to the chassis, aerodynamics designed to stop wind noise at the source, and other things of this nature.

Jacob Villegas I try to keep as much OEM foam or the "bluish" chopped up fiber mat as possible. I pull the OEM CLD materials since they are an easy replacement. If your foam is massively degrading though due to water damage it might be worth just replacing.

I used roofing material to stick on the panels, cut up yoga mats over it instead of MLV and a lot of closed cell foam everywhere, what is your opinion on this method ? Honestly it barely costed me 100$ of material and it really made a difference in reducing road noise.
@tanker99877 жыл бұрын
Yoga mats are usually just a thicker CCF, if you want a cheap MLV go find some used conveyor belts or some other source of thick rubber. Roofing seal is usually extremely thin and has hardly any mass to it, so you end up having to buy so much of it to properly dampen vibrations that you would have saved money by just buying the commercial product. Otherwise flooring underlay is an extremely cheap source of CCF. I used to try and get around the "system" like you and save money through alternatives. However I usually ended up paying more and was always doing things twice. Now I just buy the proven products and forget about trying to save the money. Too many hours of my life that I won't be getting back.

Hey what’s your thoughts on different brands of sound deadening? And is there a whole lot of difference in between more rigid aluminum and less rigid on sound deadening backing?
@margincall74 жыл бұрын
From my research: CLD: should be relatively heavy and have some beefiness to it. I have been using XXX Rattle Trap by Fat Mat and it does the job just fine. CCF: I can't call out specific thickness or weight/lb. The CEF layer is pretty ambiguous, but I use 1/4" thickness on my car with good results. MLV: typically needs to be 1lb/sqft in mass for optimum efficiency. I have seen 2lb/sqft stuff as well, but I haven't seen it in applications. Other than these technical specs, who cares about brand? Just get the best deal by sq ft, IMHO.

Would adding this or something like Dynamat lined up in my trunk cut down exhaust drone? I understand exhaust drone cannot be completely removed with sound deadener/dampner material, but it would be nice to turn the volume down on the drone in my car with my exhaust system. Just to make it more tolerable.
@tanker99877 жыл бұрын
From experience, no. Sound deadening is great for reducing road noise and improving stereo quality, however exhaust drone is simply too loud and bounces off the environment and back into your cabin through the windows. The only way is to use either a J-pipe or install a second muffler (inline).
@Vidal20219 жыл бұрын
Good video, but I have to add/correct you slightly. The CCF can be used as you have stated, but it primary purpose is for separating your dampened panel and the MLV. You need to install a layer of CCF to separate your dampened panels from your MLV. Your installation will allow any resonation, of your panels, to be passed through the MLV. You can increase the effectiveness of the install by separating the two with the CCF.
