@@stewartellinson8846 we are still poor , there was no easily available credit in those days , you had to save up before you could buy " stuff" . Our supposed wealth is an illusion, we are now just massively in debt .

@@stewartellinson8846 Not true. My parents were working class and we rented a house. We had one simple holiday every year in Scarborough and my dad didn't get a car until he was well into his 30s but life was fun. Of course it rained back then. If it didn't rain we'd all have died off decades ago ffs. One of the main differences back then was the fact that we weren't brain washed by consumerism. We didn't have adverts telling us we need to upgrade or that we were worth it and we deserved expensive (yet usually unnecessary) stuff. As kids we made toys. We found bits of old bikes and bolted them together, we played football, built tree houses and had fun. We didn't feel deprived or depressed. Life was an adventure. When we got our yearly holiday is was an amazing treat that we appreciated. Kids today all seem to be sulky and spoilt. If they don't get the latest version of iphone they think they're being abused and they're more bothered about gender issues than getting on with being kids.

even my dad in the 1960's and 70's would go on holiday in a suit and tie!! His one concession to July heat, undoing his top button, removing his jacket and rolling up his shirt sleeves! I NEVER saw my dad in shorts!

Genuinely feel sad I never experienced the 60s, seems like it was a brilliant time. A lot more personal and relaxed than today, things worked and were affordable unlike today. Shame I was born in 1986.

The narrator is Wilfrid Thomas. Well known in Australia as a singer, actor, radio broadcaster and narrator. Of Welsh descent he immigrated to Australia as a child. He narrated several Australian government films and can be seen in this film from the NFSA collection one acting along side Peter Finch in These Stars Are Mine His "posh" accent would have certainly been a consideration when he got the gig of narrating the official film of the Queen's 1954 visit to Australia. Queen In Australia also at the NFSA. And just from the other day on the NFSA channel "Canberra Today And Tomorrow" which had me searching for who it was. Searching for Wilfrid Thomas will show some of his recordings. It would be interesting to know how many other Pathe newsreels he narrated and did he travel to the UK for the narration or just send a tape recorded in Australia? In another Pathe Caravan film he was the chosen narrator.
