Wonderful playing and singing. Warm sound, everybody likes to listen to. After corona, a meeting with Northern-Germany s clarinet-giant Martin Schmidt-Hahn should be thought about. One of Martin s favourites on clarinet are "it don t mean a thing" and "Sweet G. Brown". I discoverd his beautiful clarinet- videos on U-tube. He is also playing soprano-sax at Hamburg Cotton Club !!

That was great. Most jazzed up version I have heard and the up tempo parts didn't lose the flavor of the oriental (?) nature of the song. My guess is Irene has a bit more range that most female voices, oui? no? Either way, happy I found the videos and thx for recent Highlight and response, very kind.

Ciao Don, another lovely comment! I love this Ellington tune and the melody does have a very big range so thanks for noticing :) The tune was co-written by Juan Tizol, a Puerto Rican trombonist so that explains it's Afro-Cuban flavour and the harmonic minor scale gives it that "Oriental' flavour. And then it has that great swing-feel section in the bridge! Such a perfect piece of music. Great to know you're digging our videos. Irene x

@@LaBoucheManouche Thanks for the history and education Irene. Symphony musician friends say I have a good ear. The joke is I have perfect pitch - which I definitely don't have. I have always been able to hear what all the instruments are doing. All the little accents of each instrument that blend into the song. So I can occasionally get a bit euphoric with certain songs in any venue. Not a musician, no training, lifelong carpenter. Whoever does the arrangements can make or break a song. Have to be careful with an old song to stay close enough to what made the original a big hit. After my comment, saw Jocho Stephan and Tommy Emanuel playing Caravan like a high speed train. More athletic than musical but their skill is amazing. No vocals just raw speed. I like female vocals in songs, more than the guys but some guys are great of course. Ok, got to run.
