Great Video - got me looking for a camera system. One point I would make is the inline fuse should be as close to the feed end of the wire as possible to protect the wire run from a short to ground. Don't know what the main fuse is but if the wire is not rated for say 20A and you get a short between the fusebox and a fuse in the tail light area then you could get a potential fire.
@robswiseways56972 жыл бұрын
Thank you for pointing this out David. I can’t remember the wire rating but it is equal to or slightly higher than the ignition wire it takes power from. I just left the inline camera fuse where it was. As all the caravan rear lighting wiring goes straight from the car to the lights without any additional fuses I thought the camera wiring would be ok but it is something to look into. Thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers Rob

Much appreciated Martin. I’d had the car 3 years before I realised I could purchase the accessory cables and connect a camera to the AV input ! Even better now I’ve wired the camera correctly. Hope all is well with your new job. All the best, Rob

Hi Rob. A really good video and great wiring job. My A6 doesn't have TV added but a Great Idea. Thanks Phil.👍🙂

Thanks very much Phil for your positive comment 👍. Took me a long time before I realised I could run a camera through the TV external AV input. The TV comes in handy if I’m sat in the car waiting for Gail. Cheers Rob

Excellent job as usual Rob and nice to see using all the right connectors , heat shrink and wire so no Billy Bodge Job.! Very professional. I would like a rear view camera and unfortunately I don’t have a rear camera in this car ( VW Touareg). The OEM kit to use the existing MMI screen is quite expensive. It’s a similar system to yours but I don’t have Tv tuner just dvd playback which cuts off when you move and reverts to audio only. An idea I have is to purchase a new dashcam with the rear camera that mounts on car rear window( Nextbase 522). As this rear camera comes with a 3.5mm connector I intend to use an extension cable to then move the camera from rear car window to the back of the caravan when towing. Viewing would then be via the dashcam screen. The Nextbase rear view camera is quite good resolution. Thanks for the great videos and best wishes for the new year Regards Howard 👍🏻

Made me smile Howard, certainly no ‘Robs Bodge Ways’. It’s a shame the OEM kit is expensive. I’ve looked at the Nextbase website and it looks a good piece of kit, GPS etc. It’s a good idea but when you move the camera from car to caravan it would have to fit inside the caravan rear window to protect it from the weather. Just the question of running the extension cable from car to caravan. You could use a water proof connector (or make it weather proof) and place it next to the towing electrical plug. Would be interesting to know how you get on. All the best, Rob

@@robswiseways5697 Thanks for reply and advice Rob ! In all my thinking through I had omitted to realise that the rear camera is an indoor device and my van doesn’t have a rear window! May have to rethink - ideally I’d like to use the car screen - maybe I can find the AV input from the DVD player ( unit is in glovebox and drops down). Other than that I’d have to find a waterproof housing for the camera but then it starts to over complicate what was to be a simple idea. Thanks again Rob , I’ve just ordered another drawing board to go back to 😂 Howard

It might be worth searching the internet for ideas. I’ve found a website called Car Solutions and Satnav Systems you might find interesting. They both show genuine VW equipment. Best wishes, Rob

Hello Rob The most common insurance claim by more than double of everything else put together is reversing a caravan. I have the highest standard of driving tests and class one. If I was taking a student out for an advanced driving lesson this is my advice 1/ learn how to reverse your caravan 2/ Always pull up just past you pitch unhitch and use your motor mover to position your caravan This was you will stop the accident. No one goes out to have an accident they happen so remove the possibility. Over the years we have seen people slip the clutch and tip the caravan over on his wife. This year out of the 6 sites 5 of them had members reversing into bollards. Being a good driver is about reducing risk if you follow my advice you will never reverse into something. Stay well and have a great new year. James
@robswiseways56972 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment James, common sense and good driving skills are important and I agree with all your advice having myself passed the advanced driving test in 1994. However, I am fond of DIY, always up for a challenge and like my gadgets. Having the ability to connect an external AV source to the cars screen was a good incentive to fit a camera. I have to say it’s something I haven’t regretted as Gail admits to being the worlds worst banksman. Unhitching and using the mover is something I do when the road is too narrow to reverse onto the pitch. The times when I do reverse on I fine tune the caravan position with the mover. Wishing you all the best for the New Year, Rob

I’m really impressed Rob, I fancy a camera on the back of the caravan (permanent) but I will need to get an auto electrical engineer in, to complicated for me. Great video. Happy New Year! Helen & Dave

Very interesting. I have a wireless one plugged to the caravan battery with a spe rate screen. Mainly as I tow with two vehicles max the discovery had media interface so could do the same. The jag would need a new software set up I think. Not having a great deal of luck with wireless however so may need to re think.

Hi Justin, If you could manage to connect to your vehicles screen it would be good. But this would mean having a signal receiver in each car. As for wireless I wasn’t sure I would get a strong signal by fitting my sender to the rear of the caravan. However, I should have pointed out in my video the symbol on the screen indicated a strong signal. Hope you come up with a solution. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers Rob 👍

Hi Andrew, Someone did say the TV / DVD / External AV can be overridden but I don’t know how. Yes it’s neat isn’t it having the caravan camera display on the vehicles screen. Thanks very much for watching and best regards, Rob 👍

At 10m:28s what are those connectors known as and do you know where I can buy them?
@robswiseways56973 жыл бұрын
Hi David, It is a Two Way Connector (T) part number VF02T. Original BCA equipment. Packaging is labelled Powerpart. You can find them on the PLS Group website. They are a supplier to the leisure industry and I ordered / purchased mine from my local caravan dealer. Thanks for watching. Cheers Rob

As hgv driver caravaner seems alot hassle. If big motorhome maybe. Amount reversing you do when tow caravan not needed. If unsure get out & look. Waste money
