Hello Ivan, my uncle was the late Ted Recce who’s father owned Recce engineering located at Carshalton Beeches in Surrey , I used to have a Fish carburettor on my mini, they did a lot of camshafts for the F1 cosworth engines DFV possibly in that era 👍

The Reece-Fish is a very clever carburetor, the tapered groove is called a weir, it feeds the butterfly spindle, the design also forms an accelerator pump as well as doing the metering. I think they were popular with tuned air-cooled VWs. I think a derivative was the Minnow-Fish.

The Reece Fish and Reece Minnow ( a smaller version ) were metered slot type that fed fuel through the throttle shaft via a travelling jet that followed a variable width slot . The Wal Phillips Fuel Injector built in North Street Romford Essex , was based on a rotating orifice , similar to a ball type stop valve that was linked to the throttle shaft . Adjustment was made by changing the size of the orifice and length of the link between the throttle shaft and the valve . The Wal Philips did not have a float chamber like the Reece carburettors but simply relied on gravity fuel feed from the petrol tank . For Lucas Kugelfischer injection systems contact Lucas Development in Norwich Norfolk.

Suzie has raised the quality of these videos immensely. It is interesting to compare how different all of these carburetors are from those designed for American engines. I have long thought about putting a pair of Weber side draft carburetors on my 1955 Chevrolet six cylinder but nobody has ever made an appropriate manifold. It is fed by a Rochester single barrel downdraft with an automatic choke. You can fit two or three of these carbs on the engine with aftermarket manifolds but they are expensive.

On the SU you can change the needle, the spring, and the dashpot oil as well as change the height of the float and the well relative to the deck. In addition you can machine the dashpot damper down or change the leading edge taper all to mess about with how fast it comes up and where it sits on the needle and so forth. A lot of knobs to turn but also very forgiving.

Another great session in the Shed with the Shed Racing team, what a great way to spend some time. I'm an SU carb fan, love them, understand them, but they have their issues. It's interesting Ivan, all those variants of the Webber carburetors, but I guess they are the carb company of choice to Italian auto makers just as Holley, Rochester, Stromberg, Carter etc were to the American auto makers. For good starting and smooth running, thank goodness for fuel injection, complex yes, but only for us old boys.

Wall Phillips carb was a flat slide device, used to be marketed as "fuel injection" but it worked the same way as an Amal as far as I know. They were quite popular in speedy and grass track racing, I have an idea that Alf Hagon was their agent.

I don't know about the 70's BMW's but in general the first check for motronic is the coolant temp. sensor that tells the ECU what the engine temperature is. Another check would be fuel pressure. Sometimes the pressure regulator gets stuck and you end up with too much pressure at idle (or too little). On early/mid 80's BWMs it is vacuum controlled and on the end of the fuel rail. On the early/mid 80's BMWs I recall there is also an air compensation valve to leak air at idle to lean it out. I don't know if the early ones had those.
@gordonmcgregor64313 ай бұрын
It’s a Kugelfischer system on that BMW which is mechanical no electrikery you need a measurement device to set the pump up and a LOT of patience. Sounds like the pump needs an overhaul and setting up correctly after that they generally run very well

That is the first time I have seen a pair of twin choke SU's since my brother and I went to Dicksons of Perth to collect our mother's new Morris Mini Cooper in 1961. They were on a 2 litre Coventry Climax FPF engine in a Cooper T39 Bobtail. Apparently it had been used in European Hill Climbs and the SU's coped better with altitude than the Webers. Not quite sure why, as the Webers on our Aston Martin DB4GTZ coped perfectly with going over Independence Pass in Colorado on the Colorado Grand Rally , which is just over 12,000 feet.

The reece fish and the WalPhillips used a similar method of using a variable orifice to meter fuel. The wal phillips was a simplified version of the Reece without a float chamber. As far as i can find this was the only connection. I have been down a carb rabbit hole for a couple of hours! Phil

The Wal Phillips Injector as it was called had no float chamber and the fuel was simply gravity fed, fuel metering was achieved by rotating a shaft with a hole in it that lined up with a hole drilled through the shafts bush, turning the shaft altered the effective diameter of the hole thereby metering the fuel, this shaft had an outside linkage connected to a butterfly by altering the length of the linkage and the length of the arm on the metering spindle which were both made from threaded rod it was theoretically possible to achieve a perfect mixture across the range.

I think Wal Phillips was a fuel and also a water injector. The fish carb I think took the fuel from the taper and fed it through the holes in the butterfly. I seem to recall many years ago being told about these for sprint motorcycles by a friend now long dead.

24:20... go back even further... older... edwardian... victorian even. "air compensation valves". the key to how emulsion tubes work, really. and CV/SU carbs. air speed through the venturi is based on RPM, and throttle setting. the suction on the jet is not linear with air speed. so as an engine unloads, and picks up speed from a given throttle setting , the mixture gets richer... and as load builds, it slows down.. mixture leans out. the exact opposite of what is needed. so the air compensation valve is an intentional air leak in the manifold after the venturi. add extra air after the jet to counteract the increased air speed through the venturi, and maintain the required mixture. from there, flip the idea, and let air leak through the fuel system instead, and lean it out that way... the emulsion tube. and that has its two variants...webers using air bleed jets, and motorbike carbs like mikuni etc tending to use a pitot tube. both give the same end result. as RPM builds, the fuel level around the emulsion tube lowers, uncovering more holes, and proportionally more air is bled through as the suction increases...
