thank you for practical results on this, very few people have direct experiments on carbon dosing in freshwater tanks, I am very grateful

I just watched your entire series, so good! I've always went the traditional route 5x gph , weekly water change, etc... Gonna try your method on my new 180L tank :)

Very informative experiments. Have you done sugar dosing? It has different reaction on the onset. Water turn cloudy with bacteria bloom. I see that in my pickles. Can you do one experiment on sugar dosing in the aquarium? Edit: BTW the anoxic principle went to space in the ISS. They used ethanol [?] in special plastic membrane.

Sorry not currently planning on testing sugar

Hi Jay I like your explanation in regards to the science behind this. Have you ever tried Dr Novak’s anoxic baskets? The science behind it is a little hard to conceive.

It worries me how he pronounces some things also

After watching these and Father Fish... Makes me wonder if his (Novak) tech is any better than either. But, they all seem to have great results! Deep substrate...

Thanks for the great video. I’ve heard a lot about carbon dosing but had never seen anyone actually doing it. What about purple photosynthetic bacteria (PNSB)? Used heavily in Asia. Ocean Aquarium in San Francisco has been no water change for over 20 years and he says it’s because of DSB combined with this bacteria in Microbe Lift Special Blend. He doesn’t even need plants in many tanks. What’s your thoughts on that strain of bacteria for denitrifying.
@Jaysaquarium2 жыл бұрын
Never heard of it. seems like it is used in some ocean aquariums. Not sure how it can be implemented in freshwater hobby tanks

@@flyby183 I see. quick google searches reveal that people actually sell the stuff. plants work in no water change tanks because You are removing the nitrogen stored in the plant tissue. Every time you trim and remove plant matter you are removing nitrogen. Not sure how you would remove the bacteria from the tank. Just because photosyntesis is happening doesn't mean you can magically remove nitrogen from your tank So could PSB be helpful for a tank? maybe Could PSB alone make a no waterchange tank? I highly doubt it

Great info Jay! Question: if you had a saltwater 350 +/- gal. system that was fully loaded with sea urchins in cages, continuous fresh cabbage feed, no water change, /275 gallon IBC tank, /20 gal.swirl filter,/ 55 gallon bio filter w/ k5 media w/ 8' air stone to move the nitrification along/ 55 watt UV sterilizer/airlift pump / cycles once per hour approx ... how long do you think it would take for the system to overload with Nitrates? And what if I made an anoxic-canister-filter that vents into a small water tank with an air stone to eat the gas..?? Would it work? any help is greatly appreciated!! BTW, I am new to this but have been studying for a few weeks so I have some knowledge, but only enough to somewhat grasp the concept at this point.

Great video J ! I’ve been watching ur no waterchange series . Want to ask some question . I want to build a 4ft sumptank, 3 slots. First slot is for mechanical filtration, then going to 2nd slot through partition from down going up . For 2nd slot to last slot ,through partition , the water will be going from up then going down, and up again. So the 2nd slot , i want to make a deep substrate , leaving a few cm for the water to run through. With big flow , but got very deep substrate. Do i think it will work ? Sorry for my poor english , also sorry if u don’t understand what im trying to explain hahah Greet from Malaysia
@Jaysaquarium2 жыл бұрын
you should put deep substrate on the 3rd slot. If you put it on the 2nd slot, the flowing water will oxygenate the substrate.

My comment on carbon dosing is that it can introduce instability to the fish tank. I used carbon dosing on my freshwater fish tanks in the past, some did lead to significant reduction on Nitrate. However, after I had overdosed one of my fish tanks for some period as a result of miscalculation, every time I dosed carbon, it only resulted in oxygen depletion. Also, I noticed that there was an increasing chance of fish getting disease, such as dropsy. My guess to those issues is that carbon dosing provides food source not only to denitrifying bacteria, but other bacteria as well. Maybe this is the reason why protein skimming, which is difficult to apply on normal freshwater aquarium at home, is recommended when dosing on saltwater aquarium. Unfortunately, without doing any scientific experiment and limited information on the internet, I can't confirm my guess. What I can suggest is if someone want to dose carbon source especially on freshwater aquarium, he/ she is better to monitor the tank (such as water parameter, fish behavior) more closely.

Hai bro i watch ur video about lightning, deep substrate and nitrate cyle. Heres the thing i do no water change about 3 month. Im using riccia fluitan fluitan as floating plans and im using hanging filter on aquarium 40x20x20. The thing is in my filter pour some tubifex worm to eat my fish poop. How ur opinion about that and my worm multiple in my filter floss xD (Note fish :2 couple wild betta and 4 guppies)

Are the DSB experimental tanks, also filterless? If any kind of standard filter is running..it will keep on adding nitrates to the system..

@@Jaysaquarium i ardently follow all channels who deal with no/less water change systems..and sadly there are not many..yours, and father fishes channels are the first two i have following for years..its just that i am getting stable systems maybe..but not the amount of nitrate reduction even with feeding twice a week of miniscule amounts..thats why i am trying to make sense of what to do differently..i have 3 dsb tanks now both big and small..and i love your experiments..
@Kingshukpalchoudhury2 жыл бұрын
@@Jaysaquarium why i said the adding nitrate thing is..filters in general are high flow, sponges or cannisters and they will only do the nitrification part..the denitrification will have to be handled only by the DSBs.. so in a DSB system..the anmonia produced is being utilized by bacteria both in filter and DSB..DSB takes it all the way..while filter media takes it to the nitrate stage..and so..in a DSB system..the filters will always kind of add nitrates which the DSB will have to neutralize..it kind of tries to negate the effect of DSB...so i think for flow, a pump without media should be used, which can then let it handle a bit more nitrogen source..( depending on how much biomedia the filter had)
