It would be nice to do a video on the finishes, Matt, semi gloss, gloss, ultra gloss etc and twill examples. People need to see what they’ll get for their money 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻

How did you make the thick panel? Did you layer several thick weaves together? Did you do it all at once?
@protechcompositesinc.12115 ай бұрын
The thickness of a panel is determined by the number of plies of carbon fiber used. The more plies the thicker the panel. The .25mm sheet is one ply of 3k fabric while the 1mm is 2 plies of 6k. We’ve made panels as thick as 1.5 inches thick using 88 plies of 6k. That’s a lot of carbon!!

if you were to take small stripes of the 0.25mm sheet will they bend into a tighter curve or would they break?
@protechcompositesinc.12114 жыл бұрын
They will break. Any attempt to bend it tighter than about a 1" diameter will cause it to break.

Hey, I'm looking into carbon fiber as a bow making material. I want to make a laminated bow with two sheets of some material on either side of a wooden core. Should I go with this carbon fiber and experiment, or just stick with fiberglass?
@protechcompositesinc.12114 жыл бұрын
Hey Dillon, I don't have any direct experience in doing that, but if you just bonded carbon pieces to either side of a wooden core you would have a very rigid bow. Carbon fiber doesn't stretch or compress much at all, which is what must happen when 2 pieces are separated by a core and flexed. (We make carbon fiber sandwich panels with Nomex Honeycomb cores, which is almost like paper, that are extremely rigid) It would be an interesting experiment! I just don't know what thickness to attempt, or what the result would be. For this application I might stick with fiberglass.

Is there a specific resin to use that you can suggest regarding this application? Thanks!

Great stuff in there. Just a question , can i make the thicker one as a crossbow limb? I've heard that fiberglass cloth ang epoxy resin (not polyeater) is more flexible than carbon fiber. Is it true? Thanks!
@protechcompositesinc.12112 жыл бұрын
A fiberglass/epoxy composite structure is quite a bit more flexible than the same layup (number of plies) of carbon fiber/epoxy. I don't have experience using carbon fiber for a crossbow limb so I can't speak to the applicability. That said, the materials' high flexural strength and modulus means that the flexibility declines rapidly with thickness. A simple 0/90 layup would probably not give satisfactory results. A quick check online shows a variety of these products for sale made from uni-directional carbon fiber and fiberglass to give the part both strength and flexibility.

How durable is the 1mm or the 1.3mm thickness CF? If I built a boat out of this thickness, would it hold up to sharp rocks or should I go thicker?
@protechcompositesinc.12114 жыл бұрын
That's not a great application for carbon fiber. The epoxy makes it a bit brittle so it's not the best for impact resistance or abrasion. Strong, yes. Lightweight, yes.

Hey guys, thanks for the video. Is there a way to layer the sheets to get more flexibility? Or a specific method of making the sheets that allows for more flex?
@conniestevenson2263 жыл бұрын
Different resins and carbon layers with fibers laying in certain direction
@strawhatsam2 жыл бұрын
The most common layup of CF sheet is 0 - 90 degrees. The sheet will be much stiffer in the same direction as fibers within the weave. But if you rotate 45 degrees and bend the sheet, it will bend much more easily. So if you need a bendy part with less rigidity, have your cnc fabricator rotate the part 45 degrees in their CAM software before cutting.

Hi - Thanks for the vid! I am hoping to reinforce a broken (but glued back together) guitar neck. Do you think a flexible, sticky sheet would work as a supporting material to hold the stress of string tension?
@protechcompositesinc.1211 Жыл бұрын
No, anything like an adhesive film wouldn't provide a bond rigid enough to withstand the stress of the strings. You would need a good 2-part epoxy or equivalent.

Does carbon fiber bend like steel or crack like titanium?
@newkboots5 жыл бұрын
Carbon Fiber is incredibly rigid and will most likely crack like titanium.
@patrickhalseth16323 жыл бұрын
Late to the party but cf doesn't behave like either. As a composite it's failure mode is more like the way wood fails than any metal because of the layers. If taken past its ultimate strength it snaps like a dry stick (a mix of shear and small delams). If taken to fatigue it usually starts to delam until the repetitive load exceeds the ultimate strength of the intact portion of the part and then that fails in an exaggerated version of the ultimate failure (shear with more and bigger delams). Like breaking a green stick but with more pronounced layer separation. If you're seeing plastic deformation failure like steal or ali something is wrong with your resin.

For Spearfishing Fins which is best thickness 0.5mm or 1mm or 1.5mm ?? Does these sheets have GSM? Most of these carbon fins comes in different level - Soft, Medium & Hard

Do they come with sticky back ? Also can it be cut ?
@protechcompositesinc.12113 жыл бұрын
We can send a 3M double sided adhesive film with your order, or apply it to the sheet for you. Sure, carbon fiber sheets and panels can be cut. The method of cutting depends on the thickness of the carbon fiber sheet. A razor knife or shears for 1mm and under, and a solid rim cutoff blade (Dremel) works well on thicker panels.

Just out of curiosity what is the load strength of a 1” solid carbon fiber board?
@protechcompositesinc.12114 жыл бұрын
A lot! Your question depends on many factors such as; carbon fiber fabric weight (3k, 6k, 12k, etc.), uni-directional or woven, weave type, resin type, resin content, the board dimensions, where the board is supported, where the weight is distributed, etc. That said, in the carbon fiber world, a 1" thick panel is a massive one and will support a lot of weight!

Depending on the fabric thickness, all those thicknesses you mentioned are not possible. Its usually .3mm to .5mm increments because of fabric and resin layer thickness minimums

Will the .25 bend in 2 directions, if one is extremely slight? maybe 1/4 inch across 10 inches?
@protechcompositesinc.12112 жыл бұрын
There are some applications where this is possible, such as where all edges are attached (bonded or bolted) to another surface. Even then there will be a bit of bowing but the bend you described should work.
@cyberlocc2 жыл бұрын
@@protechcompositesinc.1211 Hey thanks for the reply. I gave it a shot, and it worked :) I used the 3M tape from you guys to attach it, and it bent around the very slight bends convex, enough to where the edges appear down flat all the way, and I don't see any creasing or popping up. That said for anyone else reading this, there is massive holes in the panel, it's a stereo bezel for the car. So it's only 1 inch wide in most places, and that relief could of allowed it to work.

@protechcompositesinc.1211 Жыл бұрын
We make carbon fiber panels in thicknesses between .25mm and 25mm. Most of our products are custom orders and a 2mm panel is no problem. A 2mm panel will have some minor flexibility but is pretty rigid. Send us your requirements at info@protechcomposites.com

Is the 1mm continously flexible if just flex stress is applied or will it quickly fatigue.
@protechcompositesinc.12114 жыл бұрын
It will flex until it reaches it's failure point, then it will fail suddenly. The point of failure is when it is flexed to an approximate diameter of 5".
