First, great job and love the transparency. Mistakes will happen and you showed great character in accepting and overcoming them. Second, get a paint correction/inspection light for inspecting the third layer of resin. Lastly, use heat lamps to keep a constant curing temperature on the component, and periodically check the surface with a thermal gun during the curing process.

Sweet vid! Pro tip: Use tyvek tape along the bottom edge of the board (area you want to protect from drips) and all you have to do is peel the tape off after it's cured to touch (12-24 hours depending on resin used) and no sanding drips needed. Also using a large cardboard box over your project provides a dust free environment while it cures.

Great video! Just thought I would leave a tip here. If you want to protect your material from fraying while you are handling it, tape the area you want to cut. This will make cutting and handling the material easier and will protect the weave. Also, use cotton gloves. The oils in your skin can cause the fibers to reject the resin.

An excellent job explaining the details of this process, Pavel. You have given me an idea: Carbon skin on my snow shovel. I am only half joking. I think it would work, but I wonder how it would hold up in extreme cold? Well I suppose it would be easier and cheaper to just buy a new shovel as needed:) But a carbon fiber snow shovel would make me the envy of the neighborhood:) Last week I sent my Evolve board off for an upgrade to Samsung 18650 30Q cells. It is a project that requires some deck modification and is on the expensive side, but I love riding that board and certainly could not purchase an equivalent replacement for anywhere near the cost of this upgrade. I must say though that for the price Evolve charges, they certainly do not include high quality batteries. By the way your carbon fiber deck is a thing of beauty!
@PavelGarmas
@PavelGarmas 5 жыл бұрын
Hello David! I was worried that you will not show up : ) Thanks God ! The carbon shovel would be awesome!I would definitely make one and have a titanium edge on it for better show cutting . I am glad that you are enjoying the Evolve board. Upgraded battery is always a good thing. i did upgrade couple of the battery packs using the Samsung 30 Q and the difference is very noticeable! The range and the torques will feel different mate. Any progress with the ranger? Are you using it at all? Looking forward to you video! When?

@@PavelGarmas Yes, my friend, I am riding the ranger daily. The vibration may be diminishing just a bit (or I have grown accustomed to it) but I am really looking forward to getting the Evolve back! "starting at the middle" - * starts at the end. You should look into the "Carbon Pro" product that same company offers. People tend to forget carbon fiber is basically the same as fiberglass when it comes to skin irritant. Do not, under any circumstances, power sand indoors unless you fully expect to completely coat your room with the material. I'm now out $1100 after needing to re-carpet and repaint an indoor hobby room. Sometimes blindly following suggestions on KZbin while not keeping common sense in mind can hurt.

Great video, you did a much better job than me, but also recommend thin masking tape first then cut the tape in half. Apart from preventing the CF from fraying I've found it helps stop fine fibres from being released in the air. A mask when handling the CF will help prevent a nasty cough caused by the CF fibres in the air. Edit, I just finished watching the whole video and I have to admit your finish is much better than mine was. I'm not sure if I used the wrong resin or wasn't careful enough with cleaning or maybe got the method wrong but well done. Top tip for anyone reading this is do not buy cheap sand paper, get it from a professional car paint shop or similar professional supplier. Cheap sand paper or the rubbish from Halfords will ruin your finish as I discovered when painting my car.

Excellent video. Very good tutorial. How did you know the amount of resin to mix for your project? I understand the ratios. Did you measure the surface area of the board and then calculate? I have a small project that is 36" long and 2" wide. Just trying to get the total amount right so I don't waste resin. Thanks!
@PavelGarmas
@PavelGarmas 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Larry, Thank you for a lovely comment and for the question. There is no true way to measure the quantity required... it all depends on the surface type and the step you are doing. So the first coat to soak / fix the carbon will take more resin than any other coat, the final coat takes the least. I have done a few skateboard decks 1070 mm by 250 mm and it normally takes 30 gram of mixture for one coat ( 21 resin + 7 hardener ) so hopefully this is what you could take s a sample.

Hi, Thank you very much for watching and for the lovely comment. There are different types of resin on the market. The best one to use is EL2 or XTR. There are different hardeners as well - normal and fast. Two hours should be enough for the coat to get to the " sticky but not runny " stage. Did you mix it correctly? What is the ratio on the cans?
@umutsr.7436

Pavel Garmas Ratio on the cans is 2-1. I measured it with sensitive scales. I will buy new epoxy adhesive. I ordered it. If I have any problems I will ask you again. Thanks for your answer.

Hey mate, Thank you very much for a nice comment. I do have two more videos on the carbon and fabric skinning and do explain what is required material wise...have you seen them? For carbon fiber skinning you will need : XCR base coat, XCR resin, XCR hardener, 11/2" brushes, mixing cups, mixing sticks, carbon fiber material , sand paper ( dry and wet type ). I would recommend 400,800,1500 and 2000 grid. Hope this helps.

As per my other comment, awesome vid, and like the slight shift in direction the camera is from. but, and this is just might just be my preference, the camera being tilted is slight distracting in my opinion. Not when focusing on the board, the tilt is fine then, its only distracting when on you. Keep up the awesome vids man!

Hello , do i need to apply a clear coat for car parts ? Or only polishing it ?
@PavelGarmas
@PavelGarmas 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thank you for watching and for the question. it is entirely up to you. XCR resin does not need clear coat for UV protection so you can just leave it polished. Some people do like to use the clear coat to give the finish higher level of shine but you should use 2k clear coat as a minimum and apply with a spray gun in order to get a good result using the clear coat. The finished deck in the video is just a polished resin. i do still have it and there no problems after a year. Hope this helps.

Hello there! Thank you for watching the video and for the comment. I am in London United Kingdom mate ; ) Not sure if there are any shops who do this in California but sure there will be. Why don`t you try do do this yourself? Choose another small part or object that does have similar curves as your dash and practice- choose something that you will not feel bad if it is not 100%. Then move on to the dashboard. It will be much cheaper plus the feeling doing it yourself is unreal : ) I have never done this and the video was made during my first time : ) I did have to send the surface down couple of times but it was not that hard. Let me know how you get on buddy and if any questions - just ask. Be safe!

Dear Sir, I have prepreged carbon fiber fabric how can I use it for skining
@PavelGarmas
@PavelGarmas 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Very good question. i have never done it myself because it does require special equipment. Prepregs are conventional reinforcements that been specially pre-impregnated with catalysed resin during manufacture. Because the resin has already been mixed with its hardener, prepreg carbon fibre needs to be stored at very low temperatures to prevent the resin from curing before the material is used. Typical cure temperatures for prepregs range from 60°C up to around 180°C with the most common cure temperature for out-of-autoclave pre-pregs being around 100°C. There is a limitation on what materials you can apply it on due to the temperatures that are involved. i do use a hand laying technique on the electric skateboard parts. Hope this helps.

Wait a minute: @ 13:00 You attach first layer of carbon fabric on the wooden "form" @ 17:00 You put first layer of resin on @ 18:50 you show the board with excess fiber from the bottom and it has a perfectly luster carbon surface. Where did the wooden board which served as a form go? And I assume you can´t make a board out of one layer of resin and carbon. Plus, you mentioned it always that it is the first layer. Seems like they were many steps missing. Thought that I missed it but clicked several times through to check. Besides that: Great Tutorial Video!

Hi! Thank you for the comment mate! ok ...so...the deck is not a carbon fiber deck - it is a 12 ply deck that i did reshape to fit the AT wheels and the used the real carbon fiber skinning process too cover the top and the bottom of the deck. The reasons were to give it strength and the looks : ) I love the way the carbon fiber looks. Video has all the steps its just the confusion was with the wooden form....it is not a form but the deck skeleton. The deck would be too hard with no flex if you do not have the plywood core. Hope this helps.....below is a link to the video of how i customized / reshaped the deck : kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHyafHyFgsyLas0 Ride safely mate!

I would not be calling everyone an idiot... The reason for polishing the top is to get a perfect finish regardless if you cover it up or not plus i have used a custom cut grip tape and a lot of the carbon was still on the show. Drips were sanded off after and the edgrs came out perfectly. Still got the deck at it is performing well. Build safely.
