This video shows the carbon monoxide levels of just 1 small candle. If you burn multiple candles at a time that number will be exponentially bigger. when burning candles you should make sure that there is proper ventilation. here is a link to just one site that shows a table of CO levels and what they can do. www.abe.iastate.edu/extension-...

How did people live back then during the 1800's without carbon monoxide detectors? Candles and oil-lamps where a source of light back then, right? i guess the cracks in the poorly-made homes were the source of vent.
@barrygill4657
@barrygill4657 6 жыл бұрын
jkjed1 yes but the adventitious ventilation was greater and as co is lighter than air most of the co would dissipate out through cracks and into atmosphere however humans have been aware of co poisoning for centuries so most would have taken care as to not have many sources of flame that’s also why gas lights were so dangerous because so many in educated people would be burning then all through the night and it would kill them in their sleep 😵, I would say 2 candles in any room over night in a modern home would be safe as long as there is ventilation in that room 40 ppm just could not build up quick enough for any effects to take place.

The intention of this video was to show that candles do emit CO. The video was made when the northwest had a very bad windstorm that knocked power out to people for several weeks. The news had told people to burn several tea candles in a room to keep warm and provide lighting at night time. If not done with the proper ventilation and done for an extended period of time it could potentially lead to CO poisoning. It is not saying if you burn a candle that you will die from CO poisoning just simply stating they do in fact emit CO

+Yarn Buzz tess kee The contents of the wax when combined with flame is what causes the carbon monoxide. This video was inspired when the pacific northwest had a big power outage and the news suggested burning several candles in a home at one time for light and to produce heat. The example in the video is a representation of burning candles in an enclosed area with little or no ventilation. Even in a big area with several candles burning over time there will be carbon monoxide build up if not properly ventilated.

@kovona
@kovona 4 жыл бұрын
In a complete combustion, yes. But carbon monoxide only starts burning at temperatures above 600'C. In a wicked candle where the fuel source is a heavy hydrocarbon wax that needs to be melted and vaporized first to ignite (hence resulting in a cooler flame), combustion is less complete and more carbon monoxide is produced. If you look at how a modern natural gas or propane stove burns, you see the flames are mostly blue, indicating a much more complete burn. That's why we can safely cook with gas in our homes.

For anyone reading, this any fire that's lacks sufficient oxygen will make CO, no matter the fuel. Think about it, Complete combustion makes CO2 incomplete makes CO. Just use monitors and ensure you have appropriate ventilation for the fire you have in a room.

Carbon monoxide is a heavy gas so why would it be filling the bottom of an inverted glass jar? I always thought CO was the result of incomplete combustion yet nothing appeared to hinder or stifle the combustion of the candle - in other words there's no evidence of incomplete combustion taking place in the video. Also one has to question how the CO meter works as it may rely solely upon the burning material of the candle to conduct electricity! So it could be the CO meter is not detecting carbon monoxide at all but detecting the amount of carbon released as a product of the candle's combustion!

Yes, but the air in a jar is severely limited, so the CO concentration is high. Your room is thousands of times larger than one jar, and the concentration of CO from one candle is infinitesimal. It probably would not even register on your meter at all. Anything that burns produces CO, even a cigarette. Nobody is going to be made ill by one candle in a typical room.
@rinehartjm09
@rinehartjm09 7 жыл бұрын
Again, I am not saying that burning one candle will cause any harm. The back story to this was that the power had gone out for several days and news stations were telling people it was okay to close the bedroom doors and windows and seal the room and burn 100 - 200 candles for heat and light. without proper ventilation burning that many candles in a sealed room with little or no ventilation, say overnight while you slept, very well could register high CO levels. The purpose is merely to show candle emit CO. Of course in a small jar the numbers will be skewed. in order to show evidence that the candles emit the CO the experiment was done inside of a contained area just to show that it does emit CO.

Great video! I got poisoned 4 years ago driving a truck across washington state. Was the scariest few months of my life because I didn't know if I was going to ever go back to normal mentally. I suffered extreme panic attacks and was allergic to everything all of a sudden, as well as my testosterone went down to 150 (normal man is 300-900). I went from being a badass house painter and buffed former amateur boxer to being an over sensitive scared person for no reason that couldn't remember where I put my tool my very OCD organized shop. Just lucky I didn't die.

I think the best thing you can do is get charcoal (if you have a grill, you probably have some already at home), put it in a bucket or something like that and light it on fire. Get in a room as much isolated as possible, I suggest putting like a towel over the small gap between your doors and floor (if you know what I mean) and make sure your windows are completely closed. Just get rid of air as much as possible in a closed room - for your own sake and other's in your house, if there are any other people. If you don't have charcoal, I think you can just do this technique like this guy on the video does and inhale from the object you're gonna use for as many times as needed. I don't know if that actually works though. -Since I'm guessing you want to end your life, I won't hold you back. I don't blame you, I'm here for the exact same reason.

That is a misleading test. You are measuring a concentrated co in a small space. The correct test is let the candle to burn for an hour and measure the room co concentration. Remember you are measuring the par per million in the air mix.

These comments are heartbreaking. For anyone here contemplating suicide PLEASE don't. There are better days ahead and you have to have some faith. If you were to go ahead everyone you know in your life will feel guilty forever. "What if I'd just done this..." "If only I'd have said this..." "Was it because I said this..." You will destroy all of the people who have loved you or been kind to you over the years. Look up James Neville-Taylor and listen to his story. He tried to kill himself in 2017 (He was abused as a child and has suffered with depression ever since) but now he has turned his life around and earns tens of thousands of dollars per month, while helping others achieve their dreams. Alternatively, buy yourself a bible and find comfort in reading it. There will be better days ahead, and even if you don't feel like this now, once you get out of the place you find yourself in now you will find be able to find joy in your life. God bless, Chris (p.s. I am here while making a video to help people avoid accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. Thank you for your video Joe.)
