Excellent Video. I am in the process of building up my first carbon wheel set, and all your reviews are very precise, especially when you were starting to do spectrum analysis on hub performance and putting into real world drag co-efficient. Too rights!. I would not expect anything else from a person from the city of churches. Cheers

A good idea that i use, specially when cleaning my pads after a bad weather, is by using fine sandpaper to take the rub off then clean it witch scotch brite. And to avoid squeaking brakes I use a rubber band between the brake levers and the inside of the handlebars to lock the callipers, then set the pads correctly and tight the bolds afterwards.

Weather it's Carbon Rims or Alloy Rims here is you should be braking ( done this for years) 1. Allow 3-4 mm on each side of the rim between the brake surface and rim surface 2. Setup the torque on the brake calipers to be softer ( less tension on front and back bolts equalized) 3. Now that you have the right clearance and the brakes are softer ( not hard to pull) step #4 4. Learn how to brake properly by alternating braking like this: Back to Front, Back to Front, Back to Front do this 4 times alternating back and forth ( half way on the brake levers just to make small contacts with the rim brake surface. Been braking like this for years now and it is similar to a Vehicle ABS system, also the pads will last years, the wheels will last years. For downhills this is extremely important to brake like this as this way there is much less heat in one area of the time if you had the brake pads closer and therefore were pulling levers heavy.

Yep, road hydraulic disc brakes are really nice, except the initial setup, which I chose the harder way, build from frameset and internal hose routing is really a hassle. Anything wrong means a new hose and re-bleeding. And the pads are, surprisingly, less durable than rim brake pads. My previous RS805 pads only last about 5000km and when I found the wear, the pistons were pushed so far away that took a lot of force to push them back. Hopes there would be some videos about road disc maintenance.

Been using baradine blue pads for quite some time after watching your video. doesn't remember which one. however since I ride in relative flat area, the brake pad seems to last forever. recently just have quite burn mark after long descent on hilly ride. when cleaning, I feel the pad were not rubbery as new as far I can remember. can you confirm same experience of hardening pads after some time? should it be replaced? as for the skid mark, mine doesn't want to come off with soapy water and sponge. probably already baked to the brake track.

Thanks for another great vid, liked and subscribed.One question: I bought the Yoeleo Wheel Set with 50mm rims for 25mm tyres. While I was replacing my Break Pads I found that the Dura Ace Brakes cannot be widened enough so not to have rim rub. Loosened the cable turned in tensioner ect. The only fix I have is opening the brake lever thingy to the open position. Apart from looking for thinner brake pads, do you have a fix for me. Thanks and keep up the great informative content.

@stevenleffanue

+Afonso Ramos True,alluminium brake track also has better heat dispersion. But a full carbon rim is one piece....it can be built as a stronger wheel. Alluminium braking surface rims have the alloy glued to the carbon. Ultimately up to the individual useage. Full carbon rim with disc brake...theres another combination . :)

Do the baradine pads work well in wet conditions?
@unogazzy84

I bought the Mavic ex721 rim and for brakes, the Avid single didget 7. The avid pads gets metal shards very often and it sounds horrible. Is that because of the rim is bad quality or the pads? I've had bikes with rim brakes before and I have never heard that scratching noise like pads with metal shards make when touching the rim.
@stevenleffanue
@stevenleffanue 6 жыл бұрын
+unogazzy84 Foreign matter comes from both the road and rim brake track. Unless you are riding where small bits of metal are on the road,especially in the wet,it will be from your brake track. Use softer compound brake pads...the ones you have are probarbly eating away at your brake track. If still no success get new rims. Also,regularly cleaning your pads helps as the metal shards in the pads will continue to dig into your rim.

I would say the braking surface is the only thing still preventing me from switching to carbon wheel. I have using apply wheel for years and I'm confident with it when I squeeze on the brake, understand the basalt surface offer heat resistant however its only has 2-3 year life span and there is no way to resurface it ? What you think on carbon wheel with alloy braking surface, it will add weight for sure but gives better braking performance?
@stevenleffanue
@stevenleffanue 6 жыл бұрын
+k l Yes an alloy rim with carbon section will have alloy brake track which is harder wearing. However these wheels are not as strong as a full carbon rim. So it depends on your useage and weight demands on the wheels. Generally speaking they will be fine.
@kl-ke9ec
@kl-ke9ec 6 жыл бұрын
oz cycle interesting, are you saying to have the alloy braking surface will actually make the wheel weaker? Is that because less layer of carbon are used at braking track? Even the over weight is heavier with alloy braking surfaces
@stevenleffanue
@stevenleffanue 6 жыл бұрын
+k l The glueing of carbon sheeting to an alloy rim is a weak spot.Usually the spoke nipples are attached to the carbon section which transfers the forces to the alloy rim through the bonding area. A full carbon or full alluminium rim has more structural integrity than a 2 part section-rim.
@kl-ke9ec
@kl-ke9ec 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I was always under the impression that Alloy integrated with carbon would be stronger, didn't realize they have to be put together that actually is point of weakness. I live southern California, getting the wheel wet isn't really my concern as we rarely rain here, I just worry about the downhill braking, it scares me frankly knowing that wheel will heat up and cause brake to fail as well as damage the wheel and tire.

@stevenleffanue 6 жыл бұрын
+Keith O Rourke Wear spots like that are common Keith. Most often it is the outermost hard layer which has worn down to the next layer, which is a slightly softer laminate. Its when all the layers wear down to the carbon fiber itself thst its time for new rims. Your brake track can still last 10,000km quite easily. Check your pads are clean of grit. If not already, use a soft compound pad...they sacrafice themselves rather than your brake track.

Hi Oz, i was thinking in toeing my pads as i wish they stop squeking, but don't you think this would make them act as a debris gathering point? I think brake surface life on the rim would be compromised.
