I reckon a lot of campers haven’t done an overnight in the rain, we did one recently you soon realise how difficult it is to stay positive when you have damp kit. I’m going to get a poncho now I reckon that would have worked better covering all my top half and kit.

I have done overnight camp videos with very high spec kit that has let me down badly. (Note to self) Sil-poly poncho, sagged in a torrential down pour and collapsed. The Dutch army poncho is polyester kept its shape in the wind with no sag, or damp transference to the inside (Lesson learned) In a bivvy bag its just nice to have somewhere dry to cook and put kit. There is a video coming up on how I set up the Dutch poncho for a bivvy.

Wow if only car boot sales near me had kit like that on offer. That black pack is a bit of a copy of the British army PRI 45l infantry bergen, that I have, great piece of kit for a brilliant price. Is that a poncho roll on the JayJays webbing? Something I’ve been considering is a poncho roll, but wasn’t aware anyone made a mtp version and didn’t fancy using a 58 pattern one. Great stuff Bex👍🏻

Jay Jays do a poncho roll, but mine was from (Kit Monster) size large to include bungees and IPK stakes. If you use the poncho roll on a webbing you might think about a smaller pack, or a short back plce...

Great video. I'm a cadet in the Devon acf currently and I've never heard of a litreage limitation on bergans but there is a limit on the number of bags we can take on camps and I was wondering if the limit was to a specific unit of the acf
@bexbugoutsurvivor2 жыл бұрын
Now the minimum age has been lowered to 12 in ACF Wales, we don't allow full size Bergens to young cadets as their bones are still in development, as can cause permanent damage during FTX.....Perhaps in your area Bergens are assessed by weight and not litres. Best check with staff to clarify before wasting a lot of money on a Bergen just for it to be disallowed....Good luck hope you are enjoying your time...bex

Bex like your videos. Question for you. What Army Surplus kit would you use for day walking/ hiking. No overnighters or weekend camps. I am in a walking group. I ve been using the British army fleece , a dyed smock , and a gortex dpm jacket. Haix British army combat boots and a Dutch army daypack for my 10 mile walks with the ramblers walking group. What British army kit list would you recomend for doing walks with. As commercial walking gear is expensive. I’ve made do with army surplus kit as it is designed for the outdoors. I’m into walking more than bushcraft. What are your words of wisdom.
@bexbugoutsurvivor2 жыл бұрын
I guess you have made peace with the fact army surplus kit is going to be heavier than pro hiking kit, so we will move right on. First of all loose the smock. A warm layer and the ability to keep it dry with a light weight pac-lite waterpoof army jacket is more than sufficient. I find wearing a fleece although warm and light can hold sweat, but a wool jumper controls moister better (is even warm when wet) The pack its self is overkill for a 10 miler, as it sound like you are not bushwhacking and traveling a well Brocken trail you have no need for a heavy cordura denier of material. I buy trekking packs from carboot sales for as little as £5. As a side note, although trangia style of stoves and cook pots look fun to use on youtube videos, for a day hike use drink flasks and food flasks. Army boots are fine, providing they have comfort. However I prefer traii-runners and sealskinz waterproof socks, but that is just a personal preference. Waterproof socks allows me to confidently make a water crossing allowing the water into my shoe, yet still maintaining dry feet. This option is best suited for summer use, as mud will ingress a low cut trail-runner shoe. Carry a water bottle to hydrate quickly, when you don't want to stop for a hot drink. Your pack should have sufficient space to stow your jumper when not required, your waterproof jacket, and your hot drinks flasks. A big change to my day hikes was the inclusion of a trekking pole or two. Extend the pole to just under armpit height to thrust you forward, the trekking pole should never be in front of your feet when walking, like a walking stick, but rather remain behind your feet, don't use them like an upright walking stick. I also prefer a poncho instead of a rain jacket, it will be airy enough to dry sweat, and with some cordage and 6 pegs you can make an overhead shelter in conjunction to your trekking pole (video on poncho shelter coming up soon) to have your hot drink stop in style. Others in your group may use identical arrangement, albeit their kit may be expensive....Hope some of this helps, happy trails.....bex
