My friends is a 94 1000 petrol engine running rich. It seems to have a manual cable choke. Needs full choke to start it and stutters and stalls unless the choke is out for a long time. Is there a mixture screw on the carb or air bypass jet? when it’s warming up under choke. Isn’t helped by radiator fan being wired to be always on. Probably needs a new sender unit. I believe it’s supposed to operate at two speeds depending on temp and shouldn’t come on straight away.

How can I contact you about more info? My s83p does not like to start unless I cover the carburetor with my hand when it is the warmed up. I understand that if it was cold then I could have a choke issue. But why do I need to cover the intake when it is already warmed up?

Hi Fupabox. Thanks for sharing this video, very helpful, to me at least. I have a 550cc version of this truck and I have made a bang up job in trying to tune it. First off, I had no idea what the adjusting screws were adjusting. I'd do ok with a regular downdraft carb but this would be a stromberg or skinner-union type if I'm not wrong. I thought the cold idle adjust was the idle speed adjust (confused me to see there was another one off to the other side of the carb), the warm idle speed adjust was presumably the fuel mixture (judging from the fuel hose close to it). I noticed that the choke flap would be at a small opening at idle, and opened up as more air rushed in with the throttle opening. I assumed this was to help draw up more fule to the venturi when the airspeed was low. Anyways, my engine has been idling unpredictably since. I got it to a point now where the engine speed would "gradually" come down to an idle, but would stall if I kept it there for long. Tricky business driving through stop and go traffic. I had thought that some sort of air or vacuum circuit and been wrongly routed or improperly condemned, and I did find some vacuum leaks at first. I might have to actually remove the carb from the engine and take a close look, but thanks again for your vid I think I'm now more able to make a more accurate attempt 2nd time around.

Hey +Chuddlebuggy did you figure out your carb? I have the same 550 cc engine. It has a new (Aftermarket?) carb, but I don't know how to adjust for bad cold starting. Any pro tips? For instance, mine does not start on a high idle (2000 rpm) at all, so I maybe need to figure out why. Probably what's wrong, as a low idle simply makes this thing hard to get going at all. Mine tries to idle almost silently, presumably down around 600 rpm (no tach)

Is it possible to adjust thos carbs with vaccume gauge ? I have CB41 engine and it pain in the ass to adjust it, i bought new carb but i think its for S110 or something it almost identical but it dont have as much vaccum hoses as my old one, it has choke on vaccum this one does not. Regards,

yes you can . Just hook a vacuum gauge to the carb after warming the truck up ..then adjust the mixture screw until you get the highest smooth vacuum reading

My hijet is dumping fuel in at cold start floods wont start, what is your suggestion on the flooding? TYIA
@fupabox4 жыл бұрын
wax pellet type choke enrichment in the carb is likely stuck. A lot of Japanese JDM vehicles never get coolant flushed . The coolant passage into the carb choke is very small and can get clogged. You can try blowing out that small line with compressed air , Also likely that the float seat is gummy if you are using fuel with ethanol in it, Try 1/2 bottle of seafoam in the tak with a full tank of shell v power premium . That combo will usually clean the gunk out that ethanol can create. If not seating properly the float will allow fuel to drip into the intake and flood the truck every time after sitting till cold .

Have been working on mine and as you suggested, the choke is stuck or at least very tight without freeplay in it like you mentioned it should have. What are your recommendations to get it unstuck and freely moving?
@thyone266911 ай бұрын
You can take the butterfly off from the choke and then removed the tiny little pins that hold the choke lever mechanism in place. Then remove the choke shaft. Clean it up and apply some lube.

Can you explain what opens the choke after it warms up?
@fupabox8 жыл бұрын
It is thermally controlled by a small coolant line that goes to the carb...when hot coolant makes a bimetallic spring move , it should open the choke.. the usual culprit is a clogged coolant line to the carb

Thanks! Have you ever seen the previous model engine, the 550cc ? Is it almost the same?
@fupabox6 жыл бұрын
I haven't worked on one,but from the info I've seen they are pretty much the same. Japan allowed a jump in maximum CCs from 550 to 660 for Kei class vehicles. Most manufacturers just increased displacement by boring out the cylinders . The carbs would have larger needles , and possibly bigger valves . I think the 550 engines were all sohc , and the 660 was available in both sohc and dohc with 2 or 4 valves per cylinder . the 550cc was called the EB series and the 660 was the EF
@uruiamnot6 жыл бұрын
@@fupabox Thanks. Some parts are similar or the same, but as you know that's hard to verify. Hey, I just found out that a new (aftermarket?) carb for my 550cc was installed by a previous owner and he didn't hook up the auto-choke. It seems to be a mechanical action coming from a heater hose that detects engine temperature and chokes it?!? Mine has no choke cable at all, and I finally figured out why it's hard to start this thing!! Where does the choke cable go, how does auto-choke work? We are flooding the engine so bad that fuel goes backward into the intake with these cold days.
@fupabox6 жыл бұрын
@@uruiamnot The auto choke works with a melting wax that is attached to the cooling system . No cable
@uruiamnot6 жыл бұрын
@@fupabox Ok, I knew about the wax thing, and I knew that cars of that era used a wax-operated "door" in the snorkel (air intake), but I thought that the Daihatsu auto-choke had an external rod to operate the choke. But now I think I see a more direct connection where the wax moving part is internal and connects to a part of the original carb. Since my truck has an aftermarket carb and a cable-operated choke, I was wondering about whether there is a way to automate mine. If not, I was going to try a choke cable for a lawn mower or something so that the choke can be manually operated by the driver.
