I’m trying to get into one of these trades after hs also, I got auto body repair and pain refinishing, teacher got a old v8 Camaro in the shop I asked too work on it and was aloud, first I had too turn it on... it was carbureted and man it felt fking good, then I started welding a panel onto it Short story is it really sparked my perspective and drive for the trades

inHg is inches mercury, a way to measure pressure. -29.92 inHg is full vacuum, 0 is atmospheric pressure at sea level and a positive reading would equal positive pressure. To use the gauge you simply connect it to a source of vacuum.

I grew up adjusting carbs ,,,, seemed like a monthly thing . I always had pintos . Gotta love the ford . Now days autos are not so personal . I remember pulling off the highway and grabbing the screwdriver . Eric you are bringing the yesteryears back and I thank you very much .

Wow you saved my butt again eric i got a 85 ford tempo similar carb and i abobviously the previous owner messed with it i been driving it around double footing in for a year now because of u i found the idel screw adjustment i looked everywhere and found it behind that stupid ac solenoid which was usless because the ac is broken i had to remove it to get access to the screw adjustment i haven't tried starting it yet but im pretty sure that was my problem it wasn't even making contact so thank you! Wow 10 years ago this video is old

This really takes me back! Must be hard for young people to relate to fixing cars that had no "code readers". To me, being a good mechanic was as much an art as a science. Hi Eric, in the whole video you did not mention float level check/adjustment, and I was waiting for it since in my opinion this is the first basic settings you should check/correct when adjusting any carburettor. Often the lip/tongue part of a float can be bent to set the float level just right. Float level is important because it affects mixture richness along a very broad load range.

I love your videos. I have a motorcraft 4350 and can't seem to adjust the choke to where it is as loose to the touch as yours is in this video. Does the choke only affect the car during cold starting or does it also affect it in some way while driving? I hope I didn't screw mine up lol.

Just found your post. A) I had this car but had a 4 cyl - I would have loved 20 second 1/4 miles. BUT you could put 5 bodies in the trunk. Great car to go cross country. I am working on an Autolite 1100. How long can a car sit with gas and still start? Did not start mine for 3 months due to maintenance. Thanks Bro! Great video!

I need to rebuild the carburetor from a 1982 Toyota Tercel with 3A-C engine. Being a California emissions spec, it has a heavy load of vacuum lines. No joke. Luckily from factory, the mixture adjustment screw is sealed and no one has been able to fiddle with it since factory, so that part is ok. The problem Im having is that at idle the emissions are high (around 800, it should be no greater than 120 HC) it will not pass emissions test.

Aren't Carburetors COOL!? 😊💯 Instant gratification when set up right. Cheaper to run in the long haul than most EFI systems. One little note, you mentioned the Electric Choke Coil, and were 100% correct about it. You just didn't mention that it's only a quick warm-up system, for better economy/emissions. The Dashpot Tube, coming up from the Exhaust Manifold, actually supplies the heat to keep the Choke open when fully warmed up. I know that's probably irrelevant in this case, but since you do such a great job of educating the young guys, I felt like that detail was worth mentioning. 😉 Carmine ✈🚂🚙

Intake vaccume means a strong intake stroke. A strong intake stroke can be influenced by a strong combustion stroke on another cylinder. So having good vacumme is a goid place to tune on. I use a wide band though.

This was a REALLY helpful video for this new vintage car owner. I'd like to set the idle mixture as shown and am ready to go get a vacuum gauge, but I can't for the life of me find a place to tap into intake vacuum. Is it possible that my '67 Mustang with the 200ci inline six (with Autolite 1100 carb) just doesn't have a vacuum port on the intake manifold? I don't see anything at all.

I have a 1968 Buick Special Deluxe and 9/10 times I shut it off it diesels or runs-on. Since I'm not incredibly automotivly inclined (especially about carbureted vehicles) I'm not sure how to fix it. I took it to a local shop and asked them to fix it since I also needed new brake lines installed. They said they replaced some parts in my carb and fixed my timing. That fixed the problem for about a week or so then its back at it again.Ive tried adding fuel additives, but nothing straight into the carb. I noticed it also smells like its running rich. Is there an obvious fix that im not seeing? I love this car and enjoy driving it, but its a real pain when I get home from work at 10:00pm and it starts making a huge racket. Id appreciate any ideas that might help fix my car, and thanks for taking the time to read all of that.

Pretty sure the throttle solenoid is for the prevention of "dieseling" when you shut the car off. Basically the idle screw is set to about 450 and the solenoid is set for 750 + or - and when the ignition is shut off the solenoid retracts and the base idle is achieved preventing the engine from "running on". If the solenoid fails the car will still idle when started but will be very slow indicating a solenoid failure.

I would be interested in an updated vacuum reading. I believe that you said that you had found another vacuum leak. I know that she's an old car, but I wouldn't be surprised if your vacuum now reads around 20 to 22 inches of vacuum.

Question: Okay, I have a '73 Ford Courier (mazda b1800) I managed to get the timing 100% and cold/warm starts are no problem, but it will backfire once warm and when that happens it acts like it's not getting gas. I can post a video if it will help, but really need any help I can get. Thanks for all the videos Chris!

Second comment. I have worked on modern cars for over 15 years. Those whom say that older vehicles were easy to work on are wrong. Modern vehicles have so much automated mechanisms that it is considerably much simpler to get the vehicle running smooth. A carbureted engine is so much more of a pain of the ass to work on and tune.

Mr. EricTheCarGuy. At the end of your video, you mentioned hot start but never went into details for that adjustment. If the engine is struggling a bit on hot start, what is the initial adjustment?

Question ? I have a 91 ford spectron . On a cold start it will fire up and idle but as soon as you hit the gas it bogs down strait away .I have to gently feather the accelerator to get it warmed up and revving normally . Takes a few minutes for it to warm up so I can drive off without it cutting out . Once it's warm it start and drives normally although it still bogs slightly on acceleration in the lover revs .

The vacuum hose that you plugged goes to the bottom of the air filter housing on the sensor for the heated air door, of course you don't have any tube going to the door anyway.

When you say a "cold engine" or "cold start" are you referring to temperature or first start of the day or first start in hours? I just got the truck two days ago. Choke butterfly is all the way open 1st thing in morning when hasn't been driven. It's summer, morning is still 80+°F is that "cold start"?

Great video! Looks like the exact same motor as in my 79 Granada. I noticed the EGR valve rattling towards the end when the engine is idling. Mine does the exact same thing. Its not connected to any vacuum source yet. Any thoughts on this inherent rattling of the EGR valve at idle? I know you hear it. Thanks.

I like watching your videos cause you dont go off topic. I was wondering if you are able to do a video on 4 barrel carbs? I have a 78 Lincoln Mark 5 with a 460 in it and when I adjust the idle mixture screws, I have no problem getting one of them to react but the second screw does nothing. Even if I screw it all the way into the seat, still nothing. The other thing is that it hesitates when I give it a kick down then accelerates OK. Choke works perfectly. The other thing is when I do kick it down and all 4 barrels open It runs OK but as soon as I let off on the gas, it will backfire through the exhaust. Any support would really help out.
