Carcassonne: Star Wars Review - with Sam Healey

Totally going to use the dice battle system in regular Carcassonne. I always thought it needed that element. Great simple addition.

Totally missed an opportunity here. Should have been the surface of the Death Star ..... Cities could be batteries of iconic grey guns, roads could be the troughs Luke flies through, the monasteries could have been command towers and the grey metal surface could have been farms (with little embellishments to make it look interesting). Instead its a massive black mess that just isnt very cool looking or very Star Wars. What do you think?

I agree. The tiles look somewhat ok, but boring, because there is mostly black, some yellow ways, and then blue. The planets look simple, too. The faction symbols add some variety, but overall the tiles could have had more decoration like moons, stars, nebulas, space ships, etc. Actual space cities could be an expansion. Would be nice to combine planet surface tiles next to space tiles. Then it would be more like a river mechanism in jungle set. Maybe there could be a line and you could put ground tiles only below the line and space tiles above the line. There could also be like four lines for different grounds, and then these could be different "planets". Also some of the planets could be space ships instead. Or you could have planet tiles divided to sections so that planets are actually divided into 2-4 pieces and you couldn't add space near a planet if there wasn't room to fill the planet later.

Seems like a Star Trek themed Carcassonne would make more sense. Each color would be a different faction (Eg White = Federation using some form of Enterprise, Green = Romulans, etc)

Great review Sam. I was not sure which version of carcassonne to buy as I do not own any. Your comparison to 'regular' carcassonne towards the end helped me make up my mind. I ordered the 'original' version but the 2015 reprinted version. Keep up the good work. Dice tower fan from the UK.

i have not played this yet but i did buy it from amazon.com the only thing i do not look forward to is the dice battleing. but i still look forward to playing it. i had an idea at work i was talking about buying this game and we where talking about what might make good carcassonne games. i thought of gotham city batman. you play as say gangs taking control of the city. so you could do the same with batman like star wars but with say scarecrow, joker, poison ivy, and/or many others. but i think keep it more like the normal carcassonne. so roads get competed at intersections, castles would be factories or corporations, instead of missions you have hospitals or police offices or something else. now the areas that would of been farms would be small business'.

I like the battling when something is connected, it makes final scoring much easier, just not the way its implemented. Is there a regular Carc addition that adds this in?

To me the biggest draw to Carcassonne is how neat it looks at the end of a game, and I don't think the star wars one looks nice at all, I thought it looks pretty ugly

I love what I am seeing here! I have every bit of this game that is not almost impossible to get and this sounds like so much fun and it feels like it will be different enough.

I thought the faction symbols would act as the flags and only score a single point in the end-game when the feature is left unfinished :o

I think this will work with younger children, who are too old for Carcassonne junior, but too young for the regular one. The laying meeples on the "meadows" (if this is the right translation), normally turns around games and can be difficult for adults too :) AP too.

Finally broke down and picked up vanilla Carcassonne about a month ago... I know it's just a cash grab but wishing I had waited, would have gotten this one instead, I know I'm a sucker but I like the battling aspects, I think I would enjoy it and my son loves anything Star Wars.

+Fred Woolsey I don't know if it's fair to call Carcassonne a cash grab. The base game is rather cheap and even though there are more expansions than probably for any other game, they're all pretty inexpensive and you don't even need that many to make Carcassonne interesting.

+Fred Woolsey Carcassonne is one of the best leisure games on the market. Yes, Star Wars Carcassonne is a cash grab. You should play basic Carcassonne and get at least Inns and Cethedrals (this expansion should have been in the base game already). You will see one of the richest strategic experience from a leisure game. If you are into more thematic stuff get Carcassonne HUnters and Gatherers.

The idea that Yoda could battle Luke just doesn't seem right to me. Same thing for Storm Trooper and Darth Vader. It seems really odd.

Can anyone who has tried this comment on the rule about scoring points on tied dice rolls? This sounds like a terrible idea! Why would a strategy game like Carcasonne just hand out an upcapped supply of free points based only on the complete randomness of dice rolls? I love dice chucking as much as the next person, and I agree that the battle element sounds interesting, but I can just about guarantee I would house rule that away instantly.

They act as citadels not cathedrals. Cathedrals make city tiles worth 3 from Inns and Cathedrals...

It's not citadels either. It's cloisters (from Carcassonne v1, mistranslated from German), or monasteries (as they're called in v2).

Looks like your camera has its AGC on (Automatic Gain Control), as the brightness is weirdly fluctuating, or possibly the light metering is set to spot or something, rather than average . Looks like you're in a cheap motel room with a blinking neon sign out the window.

They really butchered this game! No farms, you can add later a monk in the monastery, adds luck to a game that has no need for it, the only good thing is probably that faction symbol which adds a bit of strategy but it's glaringly obvious this game is targeted at kids! Kinda like monopoly star wars only not so shameless
