Carchaeology: Its my Dad's Birthday. A look at his car filled life!

On his Dad's 93rd Birthday Randy takes us all on a little tour of the car filled life that spawned his interest and passion in the automobile. Great story and photos. You are very lucky to have those cars you grew up with. My dad had a 356 cabriolet that he traded in for a white 190 SL in 62. Gave that to my brother a few years later. That was when Studebaker was selling MB through their dealerships snd my mom traded her '56 Dodge for a Riviera blue Gran Turismo Hawk. The cars had sequential license plates. I got the Hawk. My brother and I got a 1939 Cadillac Imperial Touring sedan and did a mechanical frame up restoration of that when we were in school.

I am in the lucky position of owning 3 of my Dad's classics. In 81 I received his 63 Belair I grew up with. About 20 years ago I took over our super clean surviver 65 Bonneville convertible. And now that he passed away I got his 1966 Alfa Romeo 1600 convertible. In the States it is known as the graduate car I think. I regret selling some of my cars. Not to many though. Normally we keep the cars for ages. All the vehicles I got from my Dad are in our family since the Midsixties to the Midseventies. I try to auction off my 57 Maicoletta. It ran less than 10000km since new. I have a hard time selling my old vehicles. There are to many family memories attached to them. What I miss as Hell is the 1958 Maserati Granturismo Coupe of my Grandpa, I used to ride in it in the earlySixties. It ws sold after Grandpa passed away at e very young age. Our fathers seemed to have had a very good taste when it came to cars. And I think we have that as well.

Wow Ramdy really cool thanks for sharing.. your dad had a lot of cool cars. I have to tell you that we lived some what parallel lifes.. today is also my dads birthday ! He would of been 95.. and like you i lost him in 1984.. he was not a car guy but a great guy for sure. I remember recently you told us of your moms passing and how emotional it was cleaning out the house and all and i had mentioned i knew the feeling because i had just gone through the same thing with my mom ... oh my dads name is also Richard as well as mine ... thanks again my parallel friend lol.. and Happy Birthday to our dads !!

My Dad Was all thumbs and could not fix or work on a car at all. He was not a car guy. I learned everything from neighbors and School.

If you want the car bug live on in your family it is important thast you trust your kids driving the good cars you own. I let my daughter drive all the cars I own. Even if I worry sometimes. My uncle (RIP) he smashed more than one of my Grandpas cars. He destroyed a brand new early Sixties Alfa Romeo, he damaged the Maserati as well, wrecked many of his own vehicels. Not everyone deserves this trust.
