Earlier this year I bought a Genesis GV70. I also test drove what the germans had to offer along with a Mazda. Out of the Germans, the BMW is what I would have bought. However the value of the Genesis is unmatched. But more importantly, the styling is just too good. I know it’s subjective but Genesis felt the most special to be in. It’s fit, finish and style hit way higher than the rest IMO.

I was shopping the same cars you were. I nearly bought an old 2024 X3. The new 2025 X3 redesign is hideous, inside and out. It still drives well, but the interior reminds me of my last rental car which was a nissan rogue. It's really that bad. I ended up with a Lexus 350h due to reliability, low cost of maintenance, the best interior IMHO, higher expected resale value, no need for premium fuel and a sweet sweet 37mpg. The GV70 and 80s are amazing cars, though.

The amount of luxury that Genesis packs into its cars is insane. With daring colors, real leather, top notch in-car technology, and comfort. Yes, its just as costly as the BMW, the BMW could get wayyy pricier whereas the Genesis is topped out. Where BMW comes out on top is the ever-awesome B58 power, dynamics and ride, overall driving experience(NVH), fuel economy, and frankly, prestige. They're both excellent choices for the class though.

On a comparable basis (6 cylinder), a loaded x5 is maybe $3-5k more expensive than a loaded GV80. You have to toss the 8’s out the window as Genesis can’t compete. But I think you have the comparison nailed.

I'm pretty sure that if you were a GV80 owner you would smile too. The preformence difference between the two are minor. One does 0-60 in 5 sec with LC the second doesn't even have one and does it in 5.3 sec. On the HWY they will drive exactly the same. They are a heavy mid size SUV not sports cars. The GV80 interior is one level up and that's more important than steering feel.

@AgonxOC The guy from redline channel tests both suv and he got 5.05 sec with the 375hp X5. There is no way that a 5000lbs 375hp can do 4.5sec to 60 . only if it's an EV. With the gv80 without LC he did 5.37sec. Sorry but that's not " significantly faster. Significantly faster is 2 sec difference to 60 or to the 1/4 mile. Btw he said that the GV80 has a very smooth and quiet ride.

Picked up an X5 last weekend, absolutely love it! Compared with the GV80, but after test driving both I knew right away which I preferred. I really enjoy the gesture controls, mainly the volume gesture, makes me feel powerful, haha. I think both are excellent vehicles, just depends on what feels right for you.

Good video, but what was omitted is Genesis parts inventory. I am in L.A. and while there are two dedicated Genesis dealers (and service centers) within 10 miles where I live, warranty parts are hard to find. Two people I know (G90 and GV70 owners) have had their vehicles at Genesis for warranty work for over three weeks due to a lack of inventory. Yes, they have loaners, but that's not acceptable to be without that their new cars for 3+ weeks due to an inventory shortage. Even back in 1990 when Lexus was new, they did not have inventory parts shortages. Nice cars with fresh design, but the Genesis "experience" is disappointing.

I believe the parts shortage is not only due to Genesis being new, but also the fact the pandemic has ruined the supply of a brand that already didn’t produce much to begin with. I can also imagine that since Hyundai shares Genesis parts, Hyundai is more prioritized because of volume.

I compared these two in the last few months and went with the X5. Both cars were very impressive. Key details for me: 1. BMW drove better with better ride quality 2. Difference in MPG 3. There is a Genesis standalone dealer near me. However it is next to a Hyundai dealer and the sales force was moving back and forth between the two. The environment was pure chaos, leaving me concerned about the timeliness issues described below.

I will give Genesis it's due on certain things. But they need to refine their engine more to compete with BMW. I drove one last week, and it sounded like I was grinding metal up when accelerating. Beautiful SUV. but a long way to go before they can match the BMW B58 enigine.

I narrowed down my search last year to these models, and my experience is consistent with your observations. I ended up with the X5 primarily because of the refinement of the drive train and the autonomous driving technology, despite some disappointing cost-cutting BMW did with the 2024 refresh. Still, I agree the GV80 is a worthy contender for someone who prioritizes features over the driving experience.

I've owned many vehicles of all countries and stripes. But I keep going back to the Germans for performing, ride and luxury. In my area the BMW is considered the better vehicle and having driven both I have to agree. You have to make sure you have the warranty covered. But years of experience tells me Dealer networks and proper maintenance will keep them running long after other cheaper vehicles will fail to last or satisfy. Good review.

If there were points that really matter then the BMW would surely be the choice: B58 unmatched engine, superior transmission, superior drivetrain, superior gas mileage, superior steering, just simply superior in every way except for bling. But there is one area the Genesis shines: beautiful interior.

You missed the fact that the X5 is missing power folding rear seat whereas that is standard on the GV80. So to bring the seat back up in the X5, you have to do that from the send row. When shopping both of these cars, I was not impressed with the X5 interior like I was in the GV80.

Haven’t owned a SUV yet but I’ve had a BMW 535i & current owner of Audi A6 and G80 Sport. The BMW drive performance is unmatched but don’t sleep on the Genny. I hands down love my G80 way more than the BMW/Audi. The interior/exterior styling, cabin interior room, and let’s not forget being a head turner (get compliments on the car a lot) while still being fun to drive with wwwaaayyyyyyyy less expensive maintenance cost gives the Genny the WIN for me. Looking to trade the Audi for the GV80 Coupe!

ater watching. Went to the genesis site, GV80 coupe for 25, was $90k, no way. know you both found higher ranking features but will go with BMW or Mercedes. For me i would have to go to the local Hyundai dealer for service with the 20.30K cars, someone just working on an accent than working on a 90K, no way Genesis If was 60 to 70 for top of line i might show some interest but still.. My 24 BMW is fine, watched your Bmw Mercedes video, tell you. I did test drive a GLC and was not impressed with the interior, remember sitting there thinking this does not say mercedes, it was a GLC 43

Really the only reason to pick the BMW over the Genesis is efficiency. Both supposedly are not ranked among the top in reliability. Maintenance is higher when it comes to the Bimmer. We don't have to mention resale value because most folks don't buy this category especially BMW they lease it. So really only reason to pick BMW here is for the brand snob people and efficiency.

With the price difference between them you can fill up the GV80 with gas for 5 years. BTW at the end of a year the price in gas will be like 500$ in favor of the BMW. With genesis you also get free service for 100k km. I agree with you for all the rest.

You’ll need the extended powertrain warranty with the Genesis. There is a reason Hyundai/Kia/Genesis still have to offer such a long powertrain warranty. The Genesis outpaced the X5 by about 5 points during the interior segment. Speaking for myself, 10 donuts vs 12 and OLED or not, a large continuous screen vs two screens, metal speaker grills and an interior scent diffuser are not that significant. Great and detailed review nevertheless.

Had BMW's for years (X3 and an X5 and a 550iM) all less than 5 years old and so I'm very familiar with them and thought they were AWESOME vehicles. Recently bought a 3 year old Genesis GV80 (Prestige) with 13K KM and it's unlikely I'll ever go back to BMW's in the near future. You just get more for your dollar with the Genesis and they are more reliable, in my personal experience to date. Also, and this is always personal preference, I feel that Genesis has more of the wow factor than BM's, likely due to the similar look to Bentley's. I own a 24’ X5 50E This comparison should be done with an X7 not X5. The GV80 is Genesis’s flagship SUV, which comes with all the bells and whistles. The X5 is a standardly optioned model. If anything this comes to confirm that BMW is at the helm of this class of vehicle.

The most significant deal breaker is BMW's back seat. It's not comfortable for people @ 6-foot tall or those wanting to nap. Seats that recline or slide are much more accommodating. The US is a bigger market with more competition. And in the US the prices listed are WITHOUT VAT (Sales Tax in the US) Every state has a different rate. In Europe VAT is usually 20% I think Germany has a 19% VAT rate So a similarly equipped X5 would be 80 000 * 1.19 = 95 200 Euro including VAT in Germany (rough approximation) This X5 is not the top trim and doesn’t have all the option

Have they? How is that when the X5 outsells the GV80 by over double? 😂 You can like the Genesis while not ignoring reality. The BMW rides and drives better. Some points awarded to the Genesis didn’t even make sense.

@redzoom7857 I never mentioned sales, I was referring to the quality of their cars. Of course the Prestige brand is going to sell more, Genesis is basically still a baby. And my observation is based off of me experiencing multiple BMWs, Mercedes, Jaguar/Land Rover, Lexus, Infiniti, Cadillac and Audi. Outside of its driving dynamics and performance it just doesn't bring the same energy it used to, yes the B58 is untouchable and never said BMW wasn't a great brand and Juggernaut in the industry.
