I'm glad that BMW mostly showed restraint with the redesign here, although the rear hatch area just seems to be overdone. What is unforgivable is the downgrade in interior materials, especially given that BMW has actually been matching, and in some cases, exceedingly cross-country rival MB in interior execution. I finally got the opportunity to check out the X3 and was shocked by some of the surfaces and cheap feeling plastics. But the car does appear wider with better stance and more athleticism, overall.

Other notes: (just bought and love!). You can use your phone as a key- they also give you a card (like a gift card) that acts as a key if you want to keep that in. your wallet instead of actual keys. The OS of the car is absolutely amazing. So customizable- each driver can have their own settings, colors, everything. The amount of customization across the screens is incredible. Because it's a turbo- it does need a small warmup (perhaps 30 seconds) to avid hurting the turbo, the car tells you when it's ready (you could drive off earlier). Self park is fantastic and a bit scary because it's fast. Remote start in both the phone and key fob. The heated seats and steering wheel warm up very fast!! IN fact, I've never been so comfortable in a car. The bolster adjustment makes the seat grip you more or less. Negatives: You have to tell the car "OK" putting a button in the computer every time you drive which is dumb. The trunk is quite small compared to my Mazda CX5 but more room for passengers. The front row seats are very comfortable but the back row are not because you can't adjust tilt. however they have back row heat/a/c if you pay for it. The engine itself drives so smooth- that is what sold me within 30 seconds of test driving. I literally hit 100mph without even trying. it's SMOOTH. Highly recommend if you like performance and are just a single or couple. Cleaning: the piano black gets fingerprints which sucks. And the outside is so detailed with lines, a lot of them catch and hold water which drips while you are trying to wash and dry your car. In fact, 20 minutes after I finished washing and drying , the side mirrors were still weeping and leaving streaks. the front grill is really hard to clean and so are the wheels. If you want your car to look perfect- this car takes quite a lot of time. I just did a quick wash (hand bucket) and with drying took me about 30 min. NO waxing (has ceramic). The key fob can open the trunk but can't close it. and if you get a tow package- you dont' get foot sensor for opening the cargo via foot.

Everybody hates change, then they get used to it. I ordered mine and am looking forward to receiving it in time for spring. The grill isn’t the best but overall I like the boxier look. It has great acceleration and a throaty sound. I got the 20 inch black wheels and the M Sport package, also ordered the light up grill surround. My paint is Tanzanite blue!

Thanks for a great review. BMW sells a Plugin hybrid in Europe. Electric range is ~90km or double the outgoing model. I am talking ownership of mine next week and understand it was build in Spartenburg. Power figures are very good. 299PS, 450Nm (Electric & 4cyl/ 1998cm3 Petrol combined). Fuel economy on my current X3 Hybrid is exceptional on short distances but it need that extra bit of range to make it perfect. The new X3 now matches the X5 hybrid on range and will hit the sweet spot plugin hybrids are aiming for.

Both X3 & Q5 do seem to be going in same direction tough(no buttons & cheap interior)! That being said, how do you feel about the lack of buttons? And since you also mentioned the dual clutch X1 (also on my shortlist), how much of a difference does it make (considering that I am current on a dual clutch Hyundai & vehicle will mostly be used around town)?

The exterior on this trim of the X3 has grown on me a little since first seeing them back in the Fall. The interior, however, feels cheap for a car in this price range. In my opinion, it would be better to spend a little more money for a better quality x5 if you want luxury and BMWs engine performance. If you don’t care about performance, there are many other makers of midsize suvs with higher quality interior materials. I personally would never buy a Hyundai or Kia suv but have ridden in a few that feel more luxurious than this new X3. My wife and I were in the market for 2 SUVs last year. My wife chose the Acura MDX and i bought the X5. The MDX easily wins between the two if you want luxury, quality, and comfort, but the X5 easily wins for drive performance and fuel savings. There are too many things bmw got wrong with this x3 (several bmw salesmen said the same based on client feedback) but hopefully BMW listens to the negative feedback and addresses it for the 2026 models, especially since X3 sales have plummeted. 😢

Maybe it's because I'm older (well into my 60's), I find all this tech-stuff distracting and non-intuitive. I like my physical controls for entertainment and heating / cooling systems. Also, I'm seeing a lot of plastic here, for what is sold as a luxury model SUV. Looks a lot like a Hyundai Tucson!

Buy an X1 for $10K less. With options leading to $48K on X1, you get better ride on 18” wheels, power adjusting steering wheel that adjust with driver selection, metal door handles, massaging seats. Slightly better gas mileage. Only advantage of X3 is sun visors that slide and mild hybrid 48V battery. Worth $10K??

Oh, and a spare tire on X1, standard, and a not a fixed moonroof, but a sunroof that tilts and slides open. And you won’t have to replace that 48V battery down the road!

The other big difference is that the X1 is built on the MINI FWD platform. X3 is based on BMW RWD platform. Hard pass on FWD.

why i went with a 24, had no interest in the lighting tech bs... could care less about i drive , could be i drive 1 for all i care. dont use any of the android stuff. All i wanted was the large 6 motor. next will suv will be mercedes or cadilac. BMW is better rated overall but the dealership is further away so i will go with convenience over quality

There is so much cost cutting on the inside... the interior looks very cheap and contrary to the review, the 'fake leather does feel thin and cheap. They have managed to keep the cost overall within the limit of the previous generations. This car should be considered medium to premium not luxury.

I drove a Hyundai Tucson and a new X3. The Hyundai had superior fit & finish, interior design, control stalks and interior quality. Ride refinement and handling were about equal. The BMW is competitive, is faster and larger. You would assume Hyundai is the premium brand and BMW is the cheap brand.

The more I see this exterior the more its okay to me (definitely don't love it and think the previous gen is better looking) but the more I see this interior the worse it looks to me. Just feels so soulless and cheap.
