It's very, very hard to go back to other music after you've heard Cardiacs. They became my favourite band in the world in late 2021 at a speed that actually shocked me.

Firstly: you are my favorite person to watch reacting to CARDIACS. Maybe because I see in your rapturous, ecstatic glee/wonder/awe exactly the same astonishment and amazement and all the other good things I myself experienced when I discovered this force of nature parading as a "band." You get it. Secondly: the nail was firmly hammered on the head when you said "As great as Yes is, and King Crimson, and Genesis..." etc. As a DIEHARD fan of those three bands (Genesis rules, but), when I was confronted with everything Cardiacs were delivering into my ears and soul and being, I kept thinking "Wait...are these guys really THAT much better than all of my favorite, legitimately great progressive bands?! How?!" Turns out that yes, they were, and are, and ever shall be greater, THE greatest, existing on an entirely different plane of existence and plateau of musical excellence and achievement than anything that ever came before or since. Their music will outlive time itself. ❤

Thanks, Nathan! Glad that my feelings about this band are connecting with you and others. Never thought from that 1st reaction to Tarred and Feathered that I would be feeling like this. Incredible band.

Cardiacs are my favorite band alongside the Beatles, so take that into account when I say I've never really felt I could agree with this viewpoint. Yes, King Crimson, these bands offer things that Cardiacs cannot, and vice versa. Cardiacs has a unique brand of intricateness and transcendence, but can they offer the kind of transcendence that say, my bloody valentine offers on Loveless? No, but that's okay because they offer their own variety of transcendence that no other band can offer. There's just too much amazing music in the world for me to feel that way. Henry Cow, Brian Wilson, Bach, Elliot Smith, too much genius, and crucially, too much UNIQUE genius that cannot be found in any other artists. Tim only really uses major and minor triads in terms of his harmony for the most part (and uses them to ends nobody would think possible), but there's way more in the world of harmony and music beyond Cardiacs. Again, this is coming from someone who's favorite band is Cardiacs, but I don't understand how they can "replace" other great music, never understood it, music is the greatest thing in life

Ah, Mr Jon Kensington Poole, an absolute master musician and lovely bloke. Currently playing bass for Dr Hook, touring with Lifesigns later in this month and also doing Dowling Poole stuff with Mr Willy Dowling, plus load of other sidehand stuff for a massive load of different great musicians. Every band needs a Jon Poole.

I found Cardiacs in 2015. They didnt click at all then but something told me to keep trying because the music was ACE. The singing turned me off and now it's my favorite part in many ways. They are my favorite band now. With all the music I know I too was shocked how they slipped by me! BEST FOR LAST. I got to meet Timmy a few times after his terrible health incident. Such a lovely warm and genuinely incredible man. GENIUS. That solo was pieced together by Tim and nobody has done it live... Poole got close and Kavus tried but it's special in it's construction and integration just like all of Tim's textural and background parts... although that solo is VERY much up front and massive. A joy to listen every time. Cheers, brutha!! x

These two reactions have been such a treat! It's been awesome seeing you get into this band. Tim Smith was prolific. There's fourteen albums he had a hand in; the core five Cardiacs studio albums, three "demo" albums from before A Little Man and a House and etc., all three packed with great music but recorded in less than stellar quality, one solo album, two albums by offshoot band The Sea Nymphs, one album by Mr and Mrs Smith and Mr Drake (which is just the Sea Nymphs with a different name), and one album by Spratleys Japs (who are now called Tim Smith's Spratleys Rats). And there's enough excellent music tucked away as bonus tracks on compilation albums, b-sides to singles, EPs, etc. to make up another album of absolutely stellar quality. And of course, Sing to God is a double album. Point being, there is a LOT you have still to hear, and almost all of it is just as special as what you've heard so far. I hope you're excited :)

He also produced albums for other artists, many of whom associated with Cardiacs. One of my favourites is the only album by The Shrubbies, "Memphis In Texas" released in 1999.

Also: the insanely great guitar solo was played by wunderkind Jon Poole. Okay, it's actually more complicated than that. By this point in time, Tim Smith had truly mastered the art of utilizing every part of the studio almost as an instrument in and of itself. Here, he took many of Jon Poole's incredible guitar solos for this song and cut them into pieces and then reassembled them like a seamless Frankenstein into the otherworldly solo you hear. When playing this song live, Jon would absolutely shred the solo into the stratosphere and into the ground and back again into the sky.

Wonderful to find you digging deeper into Cardiacs' repertoire and this is a favourite of mine (the first disc of 'Sing to God' is a revelation). The solo is by Jon Poole and was edited together from the best of a number of different takes.

There were lots of songs on EPs and early cassettes, so there is a lot of material beyond 5 albums. Most people would say there are 7 albums, as the Seaside and Songs for Ships and Irons are collections of songs that weren't released in album form, so would be original to a new listener

In addition to the other comments about Tim's output,, Tim's only solo album, on which he played almost everything, 'Tim Smith's Extra Special Ocean Land World' is as good as Cardiacs, quite poppy and approachable. 'Swimmimg with the Snake' and 'Ocean Heaven' are standouts.

Love to see you do " Damien " by Legendary Pink Dots. Formed in 1981, and have hundreds of releases, and have toured the world countless times. They are like if Pink Floyd kept the faith after 77. I cannot recommend them enough. Also, I'm a Huge Cardiacs fan

Hi Greg, Chinners here again . . . you know where everyone tried to work out what the late great Freddie Mercury song Bohemian Rhapsody was about and decades later even his remaining band members still didn't know . . . treat every Tim Smith composition that way . . . ie. don't waste your time trying to work it out! Oh and there is far more that just the 5 albums of material , , , in fact there is probably a another good 7-8 albums worth of material!

Also get the seaside it was a cassette album that has been remastered which is stuff before a little man and is fantastic, plus songs for ships and irons which is a collection of ep and other stuff and has some if their best songs too so it is a bigger pool of stuff worthy of laudation. Plus there's Tim other bands sea nymphs with Sarah and William Drake from the big band days and Spratley Japs which are also excellent.
