OH MY GOD IT WAS A MELLOTRON ALL ALONG!! I've been trying to figure out what keyboard they used on all those songs, feels so obvious now. Thank you so much!!

SAME. I loved the ethereal-sounding choir/string sounds on that album and was eager to learn what keyboard they used. Makes so much sense in hindsight yeah :P

This was probably the mellotron used on Tales from the Lush Attic which is damn near the greatest album ever made uwu I wish Martin would come back to composing music :( :( Also RIP Tim

It's incredible. An instrument with a lot of history and I just happened to find this video on the internet and saw what made the sounds in my all time favorite songs!

Thank you so much for the demonstration! I LOVE the sound of that thing, particularly on In A City Lining… it’s like a choir of android angels 😍

Thanks for the incredible Mellotron history! We have M400 Mellotron (s/n 489) and still use it as often as possible in or recordings. (Found on our KZbin channel) My Mellotron was owned by Mark Dahlgren who played it on the rare Albatross album, and it's on the Violent Femmes album Rock!!!!! (played by Sigmund Snopek. I had sold it to Sigmund and later bought it back from him.)

HereIsShelby, Thank you so much!!.. that was epic.. really well-played and with an understandable passion ....loving the air drums!.. such a cool video.. not to mention showing us the mellotrons under-carriage.!! Pure filth! I didn't discover the Cardiacs until about 10 years ago and I'm still feeling like 'Whhhy!? why the fuck did nobody tell me about this band sooner! '

Looking at the end makes me wonder if the "simple chords story" is true. (That Tim just used major and minor triads). Visually, what I'm seeing is triads running up the tapes, but connecting together for brief "fancy chords" - maybe - at each change - with a minimum of four notes appearing briefly, and sometimes five. So maybe it's more a case of "fancy chords used sparingly"? (So made more special by their brevity.) This is just a guess/ hunch/ ignorant question raised by seeing how many notes are climbing their vines at a time, that's all.

Mostly just triads I think especially in the older stuff, just progressions brilliant beyond measure
