Married priests work great in the eastern rites. I grew up in a church like this, the priest had a wonderful sense of family and fatherhood. It was wonderful watching he and his family grow. I strongly believe this would be wonderful in the western rite of the church!

In the history of the Church, whenever faith weakens, celibacy is the first thing to go. e.g. the Orthodox schism, Luther's revolt, the Old Catholics etc. It'll be interesting to see who upholds celibacy in the years to come.

Priest have enough to do without being married. Ask a protestant pastors family how hard it is not having a dad around most of the time...because they have to do they Church duties...24/7 its not a 9-5 M-F position. Deacons have outside jobs to support themselves and their families.

A specious, at best, idea. 23 of the 24 Churches sui juris that comprise the Catholic Church ordain, as a norm, married men. All 23 of those Churches have a shortage of Priests. Ordaining married men in the Latin Rite is not the panacea that many foolishly think it would be.

The Council of Elvira in the 4th century insisted all clergy should abstain from their wives and children, which was ignored by the Eastern Church. This indeed put unnecessary hardship upon direct families of clergymen. Thus, it was organized in this way over time. A priest, like a monk, MUST devote himself to God in all things. If he had a family, it would cause conflicts that could harm the family and church, leading to a host of unnecessary problems. Thus, priests remain celibate while deacons can be married under specific conditions.

@ctfh1236 We need to be clear. Sex is not the root of evil... but a disordered and perversion obsession with the flesh is what leads to sin and evil. Two compatible people, being in loving embrace and union, which includes the physical/biological act of procreation and intimate intertwining, [sex] is a moral good. Hence, the sacrament of marriage. The priest is ordained in another separate sacramental discipline. This is clear in Church doctrine.

Missionaries were reaping the fruits of foreign investments in the form of religious services. All political parties were recipients from the millions of dollars bestowed upon. No! Priest take a vow to the church! Christ knew that the devotion to the church was a singular vow. A married man vows to his wife and children. These vows should not be intertwined. A married man would be under to much pressure to complete both task of marriage and his vow to the church. A married man will find it quite challenging to go to the hospital at 3:00 am to anoint the sick.

please read 1 timothy 3-2. its peter´s words about the qualification a churchfather shall have. marriage was not ruled out by him, that came later. if u read the whole chapter, it gets clearer that he had in mind that they have a wife and children, not getting robbed of this right systematically.
