You're not alone. My faith is all I have left too. I'm 60 years old. My family is all gone now. I'm a bachelor with no kids. I have health issues and I have no friends. However, as good a story as Cardinal Dolan tells, it IS hard to be here on earth surrounded by people not only all seeming to have someone, but them automatically assuming that I have someone. It makes one feel like one is missing out on the very life that God gave us. I keep reminding myself of what the Holy Virgin told Saint Bernadette when she was alive. Which was that she could not promise her happiness in THIS life; only in the next.

He's a good showman. I'm from the New York metro area and he's the 5th cardinal in my lifetime. I've never seen anyone quite like him. He's almost an anomaly for a cardinal. He most likely will have to retire in less than 2 months anyway when he reaches 75. Unless Pope Francis extends his tenure which I don't think will be likely as he was appointed by the conservative Benedict XVI and Francis is a liberal.

Dear Dwade689, I am very sorry for the abuse that has happened in the Catholic Church. The Church has tried very hard to get a handle on the problem ever since 2002 when the bishops met to discuss it in 2002. I do many things to volunteer for the church. None of them involved children. I recently did a volunteer activity that only vaguely has anything to do with children. But, in order to do that activity, I had to take training about the sexual abuse of children and vulnerable people, including read a sixty-three PDF file. Doing this was not a problem. But, I wanted to let you know that the church is doing everything that it can to be sure that it never happen again.

Aye, please PRAY against the opening of the Holy Doors that the pope is calling portals. Those doors need to remain closed. The last jubilee was 16 years ago, not 25. This one is “special”. Pray against it!!! So he can not open the door in the prison. Praying for us all!

Actually he said that 'Christmas celebrates the resurrection of the light.' I'm 60 and Catholic and I've never heard that before. While Christ DOES symbolize the light, I was always taught that the time to celebrate the resurrection was Easter. In actuality, it's widely an accepted historical fact that Jesus was born in the spring. It was Pope Julius I who moved Jesus birth date to December 25 in 350 AD primarily to convert pagans to Christianity. The pagan traditions of celebrating the winter solstice festivals and the festival of Saturnalia took place in December. Because the shortest day of the year is December 21 and the subsequent days symbolized light as the days began to get longer. Basically the 'return of the sun' which symbolized light.

I live here in Ireland born into Catholic faith but I've been a Pagan most of my life. However, I do like Christainity and can blend it into Paganism but most Catholics don't get it !! The Catholic Church would never have been able to convert the Pagans without blending the Catholic Holy days with the Celtic calender wheel of the year . We have a saying here in Ireland that St Patrick turns the stone ..when actually it's the spring equinox that does it. The Easter date must always come after the full moon of the equinox..and so on it goes .The calender of the year blending with nature. Happy Solstice...and Happy Christmas.
