Cardinals Get A Win In Philly - And Move Into A Wild Card Spot?!

In Ep. 579 of B-Schaeff Daily, we discuss the errors and lack of timely hitting that could have come back to haunt the Cardinals on Sunday, but it was their ability to come through when it mattered most that made the difference.
Nolan Gorman is really coming around recently, and had another big game Sunday. Alec Burleson continues to display a nice power stroke. And several contributors from the bullpen were absolutely nails for St. Louis -- Matthew Liberatore and Ryan Helsley in particular.
The Cardinals now sit in a playoff spot, just a shade ahead of the Cubs and Giants for the third wild card spot in the NL.
Though it's far too early to be caring about such things earnestly, it's certainly a nice sign for a Redbirds team that was so down and out just a few weeks ago.

It was a pretty good series despite us not winning it. I'm glad that we went against a great pitching staff and didn't get shutout although the offense wasn't great this series. I was glad to see that, for the most part, we were able to handle their thumpers. I think winning 1 of three against Philly feels more like treading water than losing ground right now. I can see Libby being an Andrew Miller type of closer who is put in to clamp down an inning or three at any given time. He certainly excels in that role as did Matz. I'm looking forward to laying the whuppin sticks on Houston. It's always a good time for that.

I thought they played the Phillies tough all weekend, and winning the way they did tonight was great. They showed their mettle against the best team in baseball. They didn't give up, Pitching was great, and I'm looking forward to the series in Houston.

@@dillonhatfield7724 I feel you, but didn't they win the Division in 2014 having only won 90 games? Yes, hindsight is 20/20, and those series against Philadelphia and Houston were humbling. I saw a glimmer of hope for the team after they finished strong in May. While I'm not ready to count them out (as of this writing the Reds are now in 2nd place!) they need to start winning and/or sweeping series against teams like Colorado. This past weekend was a bust against a team they should've swept at home.

Awesome logo. I'm glad to see it. I've been meaning to write to you to suggest that you get a logo. I'm glad someone made a very cool one before I got around to it. You need your thumbnails to be instantly identifiable and now they are.

@@bschaeffer12 You can always arrange it so that it doesn't get too crowded, but you need to always have your logo on there. You're a real pro. You're just now developing your channel in a committed way. These professional garnishings and strategies just all come with experience.

We need to cleanup the mental mistakes. I think Lance pitched good. We could use more timely hitting, we had 2nd and 3rd with 2 out and Hererra takes a huge swing that is ultimately caught. We need a better approach in that situation. Overall we were competitive against the best team in baseball. There's plenty of room to improve. Let's go beat the Astros on Monday.

Yeah I would have liked a better performance Saturday, but I'm not unhappy with the series. Philly is super hot right now and beating everyone. Most importantly, we went through a very tough part of our schedule with a great record, now we get a few series against poorer teams, hoping we don't play down to our competition Is it just me or does it seem like every single time we make an error, the run scores? Especially when its Wynn That being said, I like Wynn hitting 1 and Burly 2. Both of them consistently take solid ABs

In the Sat game, Gorman had a chance in 7th with 2 on down 4- 1 they were close enough to win that game. It does matter against Philly with them 1 of the best teams.

Cards held their own against the team that will probably be in the NLCS. If only carlson and siani could contribute something offensively the cards could have a good offense. Errors are haunting them and the 5th inning curse strikes again. Looking forward to seeing an old foe in the Astros.

I don't know....too soon to talk about playoffs. This. Current team still has slot of issues. Outfield still can't hit. Defense seems to be a bit shaky. Offense has got to step up in June. Consistent offense makes them a good team.

The issue with Helsley's fb is that fb hitters are zoning in and also his fb doesn't have a lot of movement on it. It's more like a threat now which is good.

Still effective if he can locate it though, regardless of the movement. The problem recently has been location. Not suddenly league catching up to him imo.

I'm saying that there are some teams that are stacked with fb hitters that will do damage despite 100+ velocity, like with the Cubs. When he developed the other pitches, he became more effective because it keeps hitters honest.

Boulder dash to the nay sayers! Celebrate the wins I say. We know there is a lot of improvement needed, but this team was starting to look like the White Sox just a few weeks ago. Now they are competing and fighting, and that’s exciting. As far as accepting mediocrity, we can only accept what they offer, that’s what a fan does, but we will also still criticize where needed and we want that bar to be right back up to the top. It’s baseball, you can love it or be miserable.

The road team should play it straight up rather than volunteer to aim for only one run. Bunting is a bad play idea in that situation unless you're the home team.

Yes. I think the talent is there, as demonstrated by holding the Phillies offense to 0 earned runs in their house, and overcoming 4 unearned runs against. Go Cardinals. Stop shooting yourselves in the foot. Keep Gorman at clean-up. Hoping he’s ready.

You’re too easy on Winn. This is not the first time he has cost us runs on a routine play gone bad. Plus it cost Lynn an extra 15 pitches to get out of the inning. He has pitch count problems enough without Winn once again booting a routine play. Winn is on pace for over 30 errors. Gotta make the routine plays.

I understand the question but those two are going to have upside to turn it on and elevate this team to another level that other guys just won't have. Will either do it? Idk but you don't pawn off the potential of it this year. That's my thought. And Goldy is a FA so you can decide on him after the year if that is the route you want.

​@jerednolie6754 I don't see any reason to trade Goldy or Arenado. Look at our injuries. Noot just got hurt again and who knows when Edman will be back. The Cardinals need another starter and some bullpen help. And hopefully Contreras comes back in a month or two.

So we do have injuries but we would get something back from these trade maybe young player and bench piece type things? Also we have young players at Memphis that are getting close to knocking on the door. And I just don't want to miss out on the trade value before it could drop

@@jerednolie6754 Neither player has much trade value this season. You'd be giving Goldy away because his contact expires after this year and other teams aren't giving up much for him. If the Cardinals are really out of the playoff hunt at the end of July I could see them getting traded, but if their still in wildcard position, those two won't get traded.
