We've had our packtalk skis for a couple weeks now. Were also working on a review video right now. Everything you said is spot on with our experience so far! Where we are on the east coast of the US slopes are fairly narrow so when we have others passing our group being able to call it out to others further down the slope is super useful. As far as range goes I would agree once you get around obstacles it drops out but comes right back. It really does add a new element to skiing! It's so new we do get people staring at us and asking questions but once we tell people what it is their eyes light up and think its cool.

I am sure Intercom systems will be more common on ski slopes in the coming years, as people start to become aware of the benefits to their shared skiing experience. I purchased the Sena Snowtalk2 which seems physically nicer, as the whole unit fits inside the helmet, and the mic is nicely attached to your helmet strap. $99 per unit. Otherwise the functionality seems the same.

Thanks for your input, David Skok. I haven't tested the Sena Snowtalk2 but took a look on their website. I actually agree that the mic seems nicer. The new Packtalk Outdoor (not the model in this video) has gotten rid of the boom mic and have installed a much nicer mic on a wire. I did notice some differences between Packtalk Outdoor and Sena Snowtalk2. Sena range 700m, Packtalk range 1000m. Sena can group 4 people, Packtalk can group 15 people. Sena talk time 6.5 hours, Packtalk Outdoor talk time 10 hours. Packtalk Outdoor is certified water and dust proof and has voice control, so you can operate the different functions hands free. I don't know about the sound quality of Sena, but Packtalk Outdoor is equiped with JBL speakers, that sounds really nice. Packtalk Outdoor also seems like a more high end product overall in my opinion. At the end of the day what is the right product for you depends on a lot of factors. I always encourage people to do their research and check out different models available to get the right fit for them. So I honestly appreciate your input. In case of interest: I have some extra feedback after using the device as an intercom: the sound coming from the Mic on the Sena seems to be a lot higher quality that you got in your video above. It also did a great job of wind noise elimination, when the person speaking was skiing at high speed. We were using this in a 2 person setup, and found the ease of use to be excellent. One button press to turn on or off the Intercom mode. A longer button press to turn on/off music, and a slightly longer button press to access Siri on the iPhone to read/compose text messages, start phone calls etc. Range was great so long as there was line of sight to the other unit. And pricing is very good at $99 per headset.

@@DavidSkok1 Thanks for the extra feedback. For Packtalk Outdoor, the sound quality has been improved as well with 40mm JBL speakers. We stress tested the noise cancellation system on Packtalk Ski in extreme weather and I was really impressed by it. You can see the test and hear the sound difference in our other Packtalk Ski review video here on this channel. It seems like Sena also has easy navigation between functions. At the end, it all comes down to what model is the best fit for you.

Thanks, Tremble. Yes. Cardo says it can last for up to a week of standby time and up to 8 hours of talk time in the cold. My experience when we tested it, was that when it was fully charged it lasted for a whole day of skiing and talking, no problem. You can charge it in about 4 hours. /Janus

Does anybody know how these compare to sena’s offerings? These are twice as much so wonder if it’s worth it compared to like the snowtalk 2s. The mesh capabilities is definitely a bonus

Hi G Graff. I haven't tried Sena's products, so I am not able to answer this question, unfortunately. I hope somebody here has tried it, so you get an answer. It is always worth it to compare different alternatives to find the solution that fits your needs best. Soon Cardo will launch Packtalk Outdoor which is an upgraded model with better sound quality, a better solution for quick mounting, a wire solution for the microphone instead of the boom microphone and more. I plan on testing it on snow within the next month and we will be launching an in depth review on this channel before Christmas. That might also give you some inputs on which solution to chose. I asked Cardo this question and here is the answer they gave me: "Yes, it is similar to the Packtalk Bold and Black both in terms of hardware and software. The difference is that PT Ski only has features that are relevant for skiing as well as adapted button configuration more suited for winter sports." Thanks for asking them. I tried to get in touch with them but never got to speak with anybody. One last question. Can the pactalk ski be used for motorcycle riding? Or I have to get a separate one for snowsports and motorcycle?

@@chicharonbuyakyak I guess you could use the same units for both activities since they are quite similar. I don't know, however, if there are any limitations when it comes to pairing different models like Packtalk Bold and Packtalk Ski. I would have to get back to you with this question. Another thing to consider is the installation. If you want to use the glue plate, It sits almost permanently (it is possible to resolve the glue but it is not something you want to do regularly) on the helmet. If you get a second glue plate you can easily take the whole audio kit on and off the holder/plate and switch to another plate on another helmet (ski helmet or motorcycle helmet). You would have to invest in a second glue plate separately, to go with this solution, since you only get one glue plate in the standard box. I think many people would arrange the speakers and the wires so they are hidden and sits inside the helmet as discretely as possble. I have seen some solutions where people neatly hide the wire within the fabric in the helmet. So in real life it might be a bit of a hassle to switch between two helmets, if you want to do that. But it all depends on how you want to arrange it. Another option would be to invest in two glue plates and two audio kits, so you have a neatly arranged setup on each helmet. Then you could easily switch the unit between the two helmets. If the clamp works well on both helmets and you are ok with the wire and speakers maybe being a little less neatly arranged, it will be quite easy to switch between helmets. I haven't tried any motorcycle helmets, so I don' t know how the clamp works with those helmets. I would estimate the clamp works well with 60-80 percent of all the ski helmets I tested it with (about 40 ski helmets). It has to slide in between the outside plastic shell and the hard impact foam.
