In this video I discuss Max Holloway knocking out Justin Gaethje at UFC 300. I think his featherweight skill prevailed over the overrated Justin Gaethje and I believe he should stay at lightweight instead of moving back down since he has already worked hard to bulk up. So I think the reason Max did so well is simple. He is a lighter weight. Most people agree the lighter weight classes are generally more skilled then higher weight classes. Max is used to fighting opponents who are quicker and more skilled then Justin, though hit less hard. I feel that experience factors in, partially to his performance.

Justin still has some good fights in him and can give Makhachev problems because of his takedown defence and KO power. Justin was compromised by the nose breaking in the first round (credit to Max for the game plan. You could see his team had isolated that Justin likes to duck low when advancing forward. Max was countering with uppercuts and spinning kicks) Max would have a tough time against the grapplers of 155 so it’s best for him to move down. Arman, Makhachev and Gamrot could probably drown him in pressure and level changes.

I knew if he could take or avoid the leg kicks (basically did 50/50) then he would be skillful enough to avoid Gaethjes shots with his movement. What was interesting to me was that instead of taking a lot of distance in his exits, he cut really short angles to make Gaethje miss and counter. That’s what you should do ideally, but to do that for an entire fight takes a ton of discipline and a supreme understanding of distance control

skill being greater in the lower divisions compared to the higher divisions honestly makes sense. The lighter you go in weigh the less fights get won via KO simply because smaller people can't generate as much power as bigger people so because you don't get one hitter quiters as often (there are still a few no doubt) but you aren't going to be able to coast on sleeping people so you need to be more skilled. Literally everyone that was going up in weight won their fights and pretty easily too.
