I was so infatuated with this team as a kid, Garciaparra, Wakefield, Nixon, Millar, Ramirez, Martinez, Ortiz, Damon, Giambi, Varitek. They awakened a deep love for the game in a young man that had no real connection with Baseball up to that point. Thank you boys!

I never worried about Wakefield's ERA. He was in the rotation to eat innings and reat the pen. He did his job well.
@alk158
@alk158 Жыл бұрын
When you consider he pitched in the steroid age and a hitters park (Fenway) he still was slightly better than average. For his career he allowed 5 runs per game (including unearned as knuckleballers allow more unearned runs because of passed balls for knuckleball) but according to baseball reference the average based on league and ballpark was 5.12 runs per game so he still was slightly better then an average pitcher who ate up a lot of innings. Although he had some good and bad years.

Tim Wakefield got me back into watching the Sox. I was born and raised on Yaz, Fisk, Lynn and Evans but by my late 20's had fallen out of following the 'Boys of Summer'. Plus they had broken my heard in '78 and '86. Then in '95 I happen to be channel surfing... and I see this dude pitching mad dancing flutterballs. I got back on the bandwagon, and was rewarded in less than a decade. Ohh ya... did I mention, I've been rewarded 3 times since then... and the latest is just as sweet as the first! Thanks Tim, for your crazy mad knuckler that brought me back into 'The Faith of Tessie.

@hunterlowe6844
@hunterlowe6844 7 жыл бұрын
Not really. I compare Tim Wakefield in the later years of his career (like 2005-2012) to R.A. Dickey in his Prime (2009-2013). If you look back on that clip, the pitch was only 60 mph, so a lot more break can occur and more peculiar swings can happen. Also, the ball is knuckling, so while a curveball is thrown with topspin, so a slow curveball will rise up then drop straight down. That is why curveballs tend to hit the dirt often. With a knuckleball, there is no spin at all, so it can really be controlled the the wind, and the handed-ness of the pitcher. Hope that clears it up.

@@hunterlowe6844 From what I understand, the ideal knuckleball does a half-turn on it's way to the plate, so that the turbulence off the slowly-rotating seams makes it dance around.
