As a 29-year-old unmarried woman who still lives at home, Haruka is considered to be a 'parasite single' in Japan. Working 18 hours a day as a television producer, she has no time to go on dates.
Mum, who married at 28 and has been a housewife since, fears that she'll have to take care of her daughter forever.
Should Asian parents be worried about today's millennials?
#TheFamilyAffair explores the generational divide that Asian families wrestle with: cna.asia/2ITXVQN

That's just the term that's used to describe single people living at home in Japan at her age. Women are said to be like Christmas cakes, after (Dec) 26, they lose a lot of their value.

Wait until the Mom got older : She will begging her daughter to stay with her to take care of her, wiping her behind. Now the Mom still a youngish mom, she might be still eager to find a lover, or just see her daughter as an unfavourable burden, thus wanna kick her daughter out from the house. What a Mom, can't wait to let go of the daughter ASAP, yet later would not be able to live well by herself. The Mom got to learn to be gratefull and enjoy the present moment gracefull, or she will not be able to be happy and feel fulfilled in any kind of situation given to her. Wishing them all the best 🙏

Even a hen would only lay her eggs when the situation of the surrounding is safe & secure. I think this young lady have her acceptable reason for her requirement for acceptable marriage. And she's not step on 2 boats (have 2 relationships) in the same time, asking her boyfriends to buy the expensive branded bags, then reselling 1 of the exact same bag model to get some extra pocket money. She honestly worked for her hard earned money instead. So, I think she's quite an honorable young lady. Good things in life, wether it's people, wine, or relationships, should be given enough time to be fully develop in their own nature, rythms & antics. There's things in life that we could aspire to get, but can't force ourselves to get that ASAP. Process is much more important than the result. As a wise man said :" Don't incite love when she did not want it yet...".

Like yes I know declining marriages and births can be doom for an economy but. . .when I see these documentaries about single millennials who are unmarried with children. . .the ones who DO say that they are interested in eventually getting married and having kids sound like they're just trying to get it over with. You never hear them say that they want love, happiness, etc, they literally just want to start a family because it's expected of them and I don't think it's fair that families or governments try to pressure people into making such a personal choice. Being a spouse/parent is a BIG responsibility, and you can't just tell people that it's their "duty" to tie the knot and breed more people -___- Being unmarried, in your 20's to early 30's and being more interested in other things besides marriage and romance seems to be a growing trend around the world, not just in Japan, I think people should stop approaching it with such negativity.

I think Asian daughters in general are taught that from an early age that they shouldn't just date or marry some random guy they should marry someone higher in status and income...now a days it's not big of a issue but Asian people in general used to look down upon women who dated "several" men . So the women are simply more aware of whom they are dating it's not always the fact that women are metarialistic.Dating is prohabited in school.. grades come first then go to college than simply get a good job then they see they are in their 30s...it is more like the society that shapes women like her..

There's nothing wrong with wanting a man who has a high income. However, the man will ask what she has to offer to the relationship. If she doesn't have a high income, or is unable to bring something of high value to the table, she's fooling herself and setting herself up for failure. This isn't a Disney movie. A rich, handsome prince isn't going to magically appear and fall in love with her.

If one is making $8K per month, that person most likely has no time to love someone. Surely a spouse is just another economical asset, however since we choose our partners, at what point would this be considered love? Hell I would say this would be like a some friend or stranger borrowing my own hard working money like a leech. People like her will never be happy if she has these high expectations and even there is a person that makes 8K/month they would find someone else. I think another factor to Japan's decreasing marriage problem would be that they only see the economical side of their well-being not the actual care of it which is honestly really sad.

I did the math: someone who would make at least $8k/month according to her standards would need a job that pays on average $33/hour AND THAT'S ONLY IF he works 240 hours a week (or 12 hours a day - Monday through Friday; not the standard 40 hour work week as here in the states). My only question to her is: if you're making anywhere near $8k/month, or hell, anything at or above $5k a month, why the HELL are you still living under the same roof as your mother? I guess we all have our reasons (for her it could be any number of personal or financial things), and for all I know, she may not even make $5k a month working as a TV producer. I get that she may be doing so in order to monitor her mom's health as they both grow older (or maybe even paying rent for her mom's place), but with that kind of money I'd have enough to afford an expensive-ass apartment in California, New York or Atlanta AND put down a down payment on a new house in just a couple of short years! ...but I'd still need to pay off my immense college debt with the money from the job I somehow got lucky with using my newfangled degree...

Honestly, what really depresses me here is that, if she actually manage to marry, it will be with a guy that she will consider "beneath" her. No joke. No rich guy would want an average looking, average everything 30yo woman. She will find a random Joe, exactly her match.... but she will think she is settling for him. Poor husband.

It surprising that she knows exactly how much a man need to made as salary to be her husband. She doesn't mention any other criteria like that person should like hiking or be a foodie. It's so sad. She just looking for a bread earner. When I meet my partner, he was a new grad and no job. He is the most interesting, hearty and funny guy I know. I trust him and I'm confident he will find someting good. Actually, I meet her only criteria but I'm not interessed to married her. My parents raise me to be a financial independant woman. I can search all my life for a man who has a better carrier than me. Instead my mom use to said: we want the best education for you so when you gona search for a man to married...just find someone you love and who love you. Not a transaction. So sad that a such developed country is still so old mind. If you are sucessful, fine! Why can't you be the bread earner and let your husband raise the kids or do most of the house keeping work?
