If you are thinking about a university career you may be considering research, teaching or a role that combines both! In this video I chat about some of the many terms and 3 routes...
Research & Teaching Pathway - Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader, Professor
Research Pathway - Research Assistant, Associate, Research Fellow, Senior Research Fellow, Professor (Research)
Teaching Pathway - Teaching Assistant, Associate, Teaching Fellow, Senior Teaching Fellow, Principal Teaching Fellow, Professor (Teaching)
I also chat about the differences between a UK ad US lecturer, plus the roles Assistant Professor and Associate Professor. So plenty of uni terms coming up :)
All views are my own. #drcst #university #academiclife

I'm looking into pursuing a career as an academic researcher (I've just finished my Masters) and your channel is INCREDIBLY helpful!!! The absolute best I've found so far and SO amazing at explaining everything clearly. You also have that very reassuring presence that reminds me of my favorite professors. Thanks so much and best of luck with all your future projects too :)

University positions like these vary widely from region to region, and also if it’s a public university or a private one. Here in the Pacific Northwest, a lecturer is literally just that: you come in and do lectures. You’re part of an instructional team. And you usually only have a Masters degree. So interesting how that is different in the UK! Also, in the U.S., if you have more than one Masters degree but haven’t started your PhD or Ed yet, but you’re teaching in Higher Ed, you’re called a professor. If you have your PhD or Ed, you’re called a Dr.

@@DrCST I really liked this video. It was really interesting, and informative, to learn the different levels over there in the UK. I follow several well known UK professors on Twitter and Mastodon, and this really helps me understand some of the nuances of their comments.

As someone who has recently started teaching students one-to-one in a university and been offered the opportunity to do an FHEA to become a teaching fellow, this has been exactly the video I was looking for to explain what all these titles and pathways actually are. Thank you for taking the time to explain all of this!

Hi Dr CST. Thank you very much for this video. It is useful for me because I was looking for a job in the UK and I did not understand very well the terms of the different positions. Now, may I ask you a question please? I understand that I need to get more research experience before getting a lecturer job and because I need to have more publications, but my question is, is it easier for me to obtain a position of: research assistant, research associate, research fellow or a postdoctoral research position? I just finished my PhD in the UK, but I am not quite sure which of the options above mentioned are the most adequate. Thank you very much. Love your channel! Best regards.

Sorry, I would like to complement that I actually understood the differences of responsibilities among research assistant, research associate and research fellow but I have met colleagues who graduated from PhDs and every one obtained a different role (assistant, fellow). Should I apply for any of the 4 positions mentioned? Thanks a lot!

Hi - thanks for watching and well done on your PhD 😀 All the different research roles can be very confusing! I plan to do a video focused just on this topic which will be out in July - I hope this will help. All the best for the job search :)

Thanks, Dr! Your videos are full of energy and I love them. I have a master's degree and after some years of working, I want to apply for a PhD. My question is whether a research fellow can accept PhD students or not?

Thank you for watching and your lovely comment! In my uni department research fellows can be part of the supervisory PhD team, but a PhD student has a lecturer/professor as their formal assigned PhD supervisor. Cool to apply for a PhD - in the UK there are quite a few places/ways to undertake a PhD kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmbPcnyaoLmtf7M 😀

How can you became a lecture at a community college for those who are studying course or professional programs,diploma not degree ......do you need a PHD or masters and bachelors will do????!!!!

The job requirements for a lecturer can vary depending on your subject and the educational establishment. It also depends on how the term 'lecturer' is being used - whether it is a fixed term teaching contract or a tenured position combining research and teaching. I would look at current vacancies in the subject/colleges you are interested in teaching to get a feel of what they are looking for. Thanks for watching 😊

Thanks for watching 😀 In the UK, universities use a HE Single Pay Spine (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXm0maOJdrl0j8k). This webpage might be useful - they compared research-only salaries with lecturer positions www.discoverphds.com/advice/after/lecturer-and-professor-salaries

thanks for the video! Curious if (senior) research fellows are also permanent? Thanks!
@DrCST
@DrCST 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the country, intuition and who is funding the position. Some senior research fellows are permanent others temporary! Sometimes universities will use Research Associate for permanent positions, with Research Fellow for temporary roles.

What is the equivalent of US lecturer in the UK system? Thanks
@DrCST
@DrCST 3 жыл бұрын
US lecturers tend to be teaching focused, so I guess similar to a UK teaching fellow. But in the UK teaching fellowships can lead to permanent roles and I believe US lecturers tend not to. But the use of the terms can vary!

Usually in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects, typically a PhD and some research experience is required before applying for a lecturer. You can apply to be a lecturer in different countries 😀 (the uni structure & requirements might vary!)

Hi Dr CST... Thanks for the information. I've master's in Mathematics with 20 years of teaching experience as a lecturer in Higher Education at different universities. I've been applying for UK universities, but it seems difficult to get shortlisted. Could you suggest me how do i approach and how to find the sponsor? (skilled worker visa). Thank you and await your reply.

Usually in the UK, Lecturer roles require teaching and research experience. So you could be competing for a lecturer post against people with research outputs (often through a PhD, Postdoc or industry work). For a Teaching Fellow position you need to demonstrate teaching experience (more so than research). Perhaps these positions could be worth a look? I'd check out jobs.ac.uk and compare the job requirements for your subject 😀
