Well done! I graduated with a bachelor's degree last summer, and I have considered taking this path for a while. However, I am incredibly keen on creative things like music production, tv, and comedy, and I am kind of banging my head against the wall, trying to figure out if it's worth heading into the academic direction, or not... One of my lecturers at UC Birmingham is a great, chilled guy, who loves what he is doing (young, like you) and I have to say, he must have inspired a bunch of use with his enthusiasm. I studied International Tourism Management, which is a very broad course, and gives you a chance to discuss so many aspects of life and corporate affairs. They took us on two uni trips to Berlin and Iceland, so you can imagine how tempting this is for someone who loves travelling... :D :) I am now going to watch you next suggested video on 'pros and cons'. Thank you so much for making this. It's so difficult to find information online. All of the articles I've read make it sound like you do your PhD, something magical happens and you're suddenly a lecturer somehow. I am just about to complete my MA in Creative Writing and hope to be a lecturerer in English and Creative Writing. I wondered if the path you are describing here would also apply to people doing non STEM subjects. I know it's harder to find a postdoc position when you're doing a subject like mine. I've also known people who have got into lecturering with only an MA, but they're studying their PhD at the same time. Do you know how they would be able to do that? I plan to take a break before my PhD and so that could be a good way to get experience if it's possible.

Dear Dr CST, thank you for this very informative sharing. I'm wondering what your opinion is about doing a post-doc in the same uni supervised by a supervisor who is your PhD supervisor? I am based in New Zealand, just submitted my PhD dissertation, I am hesitating if I should do a post-doc while waiting in NZ this year (for oral defense and other things) before I move to UK next year.
@DrCST
@DrCST Жыл бұрын
Some academics will encourage PhD students to experience different academic locations for a post-doc (especially if the undergrad and PhD were at the same location), but equally others will be very keen to retain their PhD students as they already have experience in the research area and know the university. There are a number of factors to consider, key will be the actual research work of the post-doc, associated finances and whether geographically it is better to stay. The trick is to ensure you can begin to build your own academic identity during your post-doc, wherever the location. Hmmm this is a long answer... I think you have hit on a video topic! All the best for your PhD defence.

It depends on your subject, but in physics you tend to do a masters, PhD, then PostDoctoral research and then apply for a lecturer position. But there are other routes, i.e. after my PhD I worked in industry and then came back to academia. If you are looking to follow a teaching fellow route ((kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2qxin18iLpneLM 8'14) then you might be able to include working at a high school and transition over to a university.

@DrCST

If you are looking to do a PhD, a master's qualification can be a very useful addition and in some cases needed. In industry, some jobs will require/benefit from a master's but others will take entry after the bachelor's. Of course, you can also elect to take a master's because you enjoy the subject and wish to continue studying it 😀

One of the lovely aspects of academia is you can move to different universities in different countries. I'd have a look at the requirements of some lectureship positions (both the role and any needed visa etc). Like many jobs, academia is competitive and most physics lectureships will require postdoc or industry experience, as well as the PhD. But this is a good way to grow your publications and experience 😀

If you substitute an industrial placement for a post-doc research, how long would it take to complete it and do you get paid while on it?
@DrCST

Industry placements often happen during your undergraduate and PhD studies, typically lasting between a month and a year+. Some placements are paid and others not. When I left academia I joined industry as a full time employee with a salary. So I was working for the company, rather than being on a placement.

(for example I am thinking about studying sociology/ sociology with criminology at undergraduate level, then progressing upwards with the hope of being a university lecturer for sociology/criminology).
@DrCST
@DrCST 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Most UK lecturer positions are a mix of research, teaching and administrative duties. Within STEM having a PhD is very typical but if you have a look at jobs.ac.uk you can search for lectureship vacancies in your field and see the typical requirements. You can search for sociology and criminology positions. I hope this helps. All the best for your A-levels 😊

@DrCST

For a lectureship in physics many applicants will have completed a PhD and then gained both research and teaching experience, often through Postdoctoral research positions, sometimes in industry. There is a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (happens after a PhD), or a Research Assistant (often after a bachelor's or masters) - these are two different types of position. I'd suggest having a look at advertised job vacancies to get a feel of the typical requirements for these roles. All the best.

Thank you for watching 😃 Usually for a lectureship (in the UK) you need to show research & teaching; a PostDoc is a great way to build up your research experience. @DrCST

I'm not aware of any minimum age, but typically (for physics) you need to get a good first degree (3-4 years), PhD (3-4 years), research experience & teaching experience (6 years +). These are only estimates, some people will acquire more years in research before becoming a lecturer. After my PhD I had a career in industry first and then returned to academia as a lecturer :) Some lecturers will fully retire, others retire part-time, and some professors can remain connected to the university as emeritus professors.
