Word of advice to those who are going to major in Psych: Know what specific subfield of psychology that you want to work in and build your resume around that. Intern and volunteer your ass off during your undergrad career. Have AT LEAST 2 internships plus a volunteering gig on your resume by the time you graduate. Help a professor with their research project even if it's just transcribing/coding/etc. Maybe even try to do your own. Try to get something published. Don't expect that a BA/BS in Psych is enough! Make sure you have a shit ton of extracurriculars.

Iam just pointing out, when Sarah said psychiatrists can prescribe medication, you need to know that a psychiatrist is a medical doctor and they have attended med school. A psychologist is not a psychiatrist.
@DrShawnaFreshwater
@DrShawnaFreshwater 5 жыл бұрын
True. In the USA a psychiatrist attends medical school for 4-years and earns a MD | and a Clinical Psychologist PhD attends school for 5 years. (PhD is the highest degree bestowed by academia.). both MD and PhD go onto complete residency programs. |. a PhD will go on further to complete PostDoctoral fellowships. PhD are the brainiacs : )

Thansk for this! I am interested in working in a pharmaceutical company to something related to drugs development. I am now finishing my bachelor and the only related master in psychology in my town is master in cognitive neuropsychology. Sounds relevant but i am afraid that it gives a bit of a lot of focus on neuropsychological assessment... They do not mention the word drugs or pharmaceuticals not even once in the masters website...Do you think it is a good fit?

Be careful. I wanted to major in psychology also but after doing extensive research and spoke to various people who are psychology majors, I learned it is extremely hard to get an entry level job. In order to even get decent pay, you would have to get a master's or PHD. I wish it was a more popular field because psychology is so important but sadly it's not.

I am almost done with my bachelor's in psychology and going on with my master's. I am soooo awkward, but as you go through your classes and talk to other people it diminishes a little. It is something I have to work on everyday. A psychologist would need to get a doctorate. I talked to one of my professors who did get her doctorate, and she said that getting a master's allows you to do more with your degree, compared to your doctorate. I wanted to be a psychologist too, until I read up on it and realized that I will do just as great with just a master's.

I was looking into psychology but so many people in my school, KZbin, and the Internet are saying they want to major in it. Idk if it's a new trend. But I'm not about to compete with all these people for a certain job. I was mainly looking into forensic science and after talking to school, I still need to minor psychology and other things to be where I want.

I do think it's a trend. It's an easy degree to get and everyone thinks it's going to be a sure way to get a job. A majority of the students that went to college out of my high school seem to either be majoring or minoring in psychology.

petalk95 So weird how its different in other countries... In Germany you need to have like the BEST GRADES ever in high school to even have the slightest chance to get a place in university. The same with medicine. I had to go through a lot of hard work, lawyers and stuff and got a chance to study it even though I was not the best in school (because I was sick for a long time). Is that different in other countries? Can anyone who finished high school take psychology, without worrying about their grades? Or do they have need to take like an entry test beforhand? Just curious :)

KissenxundxDecke i just compleated my bachelor degree in psychology and especialy in neuropsychology in Greece.here because this subject is very very new (just 30 years) we are lucky enough to have some of the best departments.just have in mind that when other countries give the bachelor of psychology with 180 ECTS we have to complete a 4 year study plan with at least 240 ECTS and practicum and final dissertation and also follow a certain psychology direction(such as neuropsychology,children psychology,cognitive etc.) In order to study in any university you have to give exams in general matters such as history and ancient greek and compete with all the other students in greece for a place in the greek universities.if you fail you will have to give the exams again next year. we have 3 departments of psychology in greece all in different university and psychology is the second highest department to get in with almost 19.000 out of 20.000.

I'm from Argentina, and I finished high school 5 years ago. Everyone in my school wanted to study psychology, and guess what? no one did! They all thought it was easy to do, rather than study medicine or law, and they were choosing it "just in case they had to choose a career". No one actually wanted to go to psych school. My advice then is: do whatever you want to do. If you really love the subject you might be very good at it, so even if all your classmates study the same thing they might not finish it or switch careers. Don't treat your life choice as a competition. If you feel it's right for you, do it. I studied music production because that's what I wanted for over 10 years, and I finished and realized I wasn't good at it, it didn't make me happy. I'm now a subtitle translator and I'm definitely happier since I decided what to do with my life. It happens.

@@sarahzd2645 well I'm from Mexico, so this might vary but here it is in fact NOT something you can live from. I'm personally not a therapist, because you need a lot of preparation and money to be able to do it ethically. I'd describe the knowledge I acquired during the career as GOLD on my daily life and as a teacher (that's what I do) but only some of my classmates could actually live from being a therapist/psychologist, the rest of us are doing other stuff as our jobs (teaching, human resources in a company, work for the police, etc)

Looove your hair/overall look in this video. Maybe you could do a video about the difficulties/challenges of wanting to work in a field with mentally ill people/people that go through a lot of shit while being also ill. Generall working with a mental illness, knowing that it could impact your work if you aren't in a good place mental health wise. Just your thoughts about that subject if you have any, which you certainly do. It would be interesting because I'm studying psychology aswell and have mental health problems too and think its an important thing to think/talk about in that work field

Nicely done. I am half way through my psychology grad-school currently contemplating what my PhD focus will be. It looks like the best option might be IO-Psyche since it's one of the fastest growing jobs in America let alone psychology. Huge decision. I would prefer to do something more woo-woo like studying the changes in psyche from philosophy and religion but future employment would be a long-shot outside of a professorship. I fully expect to teach on the side. It's tough to decide. Good luck on your path :)

Hi Sarah, Very informative video. I also wanted to add to your definition of clinical and counseling psychology. Clinical comes from the Greek word, "Kline", which means bed. Similar English word is "recline". Clinical psychologists were the psychologists who visits a client at "bedside" or in clinics (a place with lots of beds). Counseling comes from the Latin word "consulere" which means to advise. Counseling psychologist gives advice to clients who have problems with career questions, job pathways, how to deal with marriage problems, unruly relative, and similar areas not necessarily psychopathology in nature. Clinical psychologists are more rooted in the process of helping clients with mental health disorders than giving advices like counseling psychologists. Even though both psychologists are verse in either field because many states require the same procedures to obtain a license for clinical or counseling specialties, there will be a difference in purpose. There are some minor difference between the two in training as well. One requires more or less practicum/internship hours than the other. Prior to attending a psychotherapy with a licensed psychologist, a person should ask whether he/she received their doctorate in clinic or counseling. This will give you a general idea of their perspective. My personal distinction is this: clinical psychologists visit the clients while the clients visit the counseling psychologists. This should give you an idea of their principles, settings, and purpose. I hope that helps.

Great video. I took a class in my undergrad on careers in psych and interned at some places, as well as meet with a career adviser. You did a good job at explaining in this video. I'm currently in grad school for social and clinical psych.

I've always been interested in psychology, not just as a subject to study, but as itself. I want to help people with mental issues and I am so fascinated by our emotions, motivations and behaviours. Since I've been watching you, I am seriously thinking about studying it too. What you tell about it and how you talk about it is so amazing! Please keep on doing those psychology-based videos, I'm so keen on watching those videos. Maybe because there's no other KZbinr talking about this topic, whereas there are tons of KZbinrs talking about fashion or Make-Up (don't get me wrong, I love those videos too) :)

Hey. I don’t know if you’re gonna see this, but I’m 14 and I’ve wanted to do psychology as a career for a while now. I stumbled upon your videos somehow, idk how, but it was your unethical experiments video and it was fascinating to me !! I watched this video and I’m now more sure that I want to do this, and I’m glad there’s so much I can choose from. I’m most enticed by the School/clinical or forensic paths but they all sound so awesome so ... thanks !!

With the SOCIAL AND CONSUMER PSYCHOLOGY, you can go into marketing research. You can make TONS, and it is really interesting. But it can be super boring making surveys. But doing focus groups and interviews is fun. There is also no "tricking" people, it is really illegal. But they do it to help make campaigns better suited for their target. So a diaper company might want to know the age/salary of consumers to lower/raise prices or how to advertise. For an example!
