Looking at my licence today I see 4b is 11-01-21 So I’ve been driving ( and towing) for almost a year without a valid licence!! Off to renew now !! A further warning. It's quite common for the DVLA to miss off some entitlements when you renew it. This often happens with motorcycle entitlements. So take a photo of the photocard before you send it off, otherwise proving they made a mistake is very hard.

The DVLA will not except a photo copy of your licence the will only except your pass certificate or a copy provided by your test examiner

@@danensis Gary Wheble is Correct about photo copies. The loss of motorcycle entitlement is more common than you would think. Many years ago a M/Cycle publication suggested. A letter & SAE requesting the return of the old licence (defaced). Or temporarily 'loosing / misplacing' the licence.

absolutely - NEVER renew your licence on line unless you want to lose some of your entitlements! DVLA are very good at missing off your entitlements. I have known motorcyclists suddenly lose their right to ride their bigger bike, only to be told by DVLA that they had to re-take their test!! Money making or what! Without a photocopy/ photo of your old license you will not get back your entitlements......

Beware ! You can’t renew licences for categories over 3.5 T if you are over 70 without an eye test and if you renew on line you will only get the basic categories up to 3.5 T renewed. It has to be done by post which takes time.

I got caught by this last year. My van that I use for work every day had an engine failure. No van equals no income so the next day I set about hiring one quickly. Only to discover that I couldn’t because my license had expired. I run my business from my house, so when post comes in each day then I sort it into work or home stuff. So I look at my post closely and I can one hundred percent say that I never got a reminder letter either. But let’s be honest that’s not really a surprise. The DVLA is known to be a total shambles.

It was well publicised at the introduction of the photocard license that they will need renewing at a cost every ten years. I needed to renew my license due to moving home very shortly after they were introduced and at the time (it was £10) I said to people it will be a lot more by the time we need to renew it and it was just a stealth tax but I was told I was being stupid.

My paper licence was valid to 70 When I retired from the RAF I moved to Germany, cannot have new licence no UK residence, but I was issued with a US Army driving licence against my UK one. when I retired from that I received a German (EU) driving licence, took all of 10 minutes, on that it said Expire none . I have since changed that for a UK licence which in my case is 3 years.

When the new photo licences were introduced in 1999, the DVLA tried to con everyone in to exchanging the old paper licence even if you didn't need to. What they deliberately didn't overly publicize at the time was the 10 year expiry of the photo and the ongoing renewal cost every 10 years. I held on to my paper licence which is still valid for another 20 years. No change of address and no driving offences ever, so they won't be getting hold of my money until I'm 70. However, I just read that if I make it to 70 without needing to exchange then it's allegedly a free exchange at that point.

@@Keisha7612 Paper licences were issued up until 31 March 2000 and generally gave entitlement until you turned 70. As such, a 17 year old who was issued a paper licence on 31 March 2000 would have been given entitlement to drive until 2053. If they didn't change their address and didn't get any points then the licence continues to remain valid until 2053. My own old paper licence is currently still valid until 2039. Unfortunately, I have just read that old paper licences must now be exchanged for a plastic photo licence by 2033.

You can only renew on line if you have a valid passport. Otherwise you have to go to a designated post office to be photographed, and then your licence can be renewed. The ten year period is so that you have an up to date photograph on the licence. Hope this helps.

Actually, it's not the licence that expires. It's the photo ID part that expires. I recently had to renew mine and they sent me a reminder letter. To renew online, you need a valid passport. If you don't have one, to to a designated Post Office and it'll cost you £21 instead of the £14 online fee.

Been like this for decades, you must have managed to hold onto your paper licence till they were phased out. BUT ANOTHER WARNING ⚠️ applications for renewal online are taken from the date you apply not from the current expiration date, so if you apply straightaway on receiving your reminder you will lose the balance of time left, so remember to apply within the last week.

Hi Keith; just found you guys. Yeah, I had a similar experience with my photo-type driving licence. I believe it's only valid for 10 years; not because of the driving aspect, but because it is often used as photo ID. ie they like to see a "current" photo of you!

This is interesting because I heard something to the contrary. There was a tv programme (I can't remember which one) that said if you have held a licence, you are not disqualified and you're within the normal expiry period of the 70th birthday you are legal to drive in the UK. Just as a side note, I no longer live in the UK and my driving licence could not be updated because the DVLA system cannot cope with foreign addresses.

Another problem is that is when you get older you are suddenly limited to a car and caravan weight of 3500Kg. combined. This can limits your choice of a 4x4 and caravan for towing.

I've still got my pink paper licence which runs until I'm 70, next March. Important thing in my case is that I am still at the same address as when licence was issued in 1976. I decided when photocard licences came out not to jump on bandwagon as I have a passport for identity purposes. When I change to photocard next March this will be issued free and I don't intend going for C1 entitlement.

Here in South Africa our license is only valid for 5 years, but provided you keep it up to date there is no age limit. The only problem is that you need to go to the licensing dept. for an eye test. Which is where you run headlong into a lazy, incompetent bureaucracy which takes 2 months to produce the new one. Then you have to queue in the sun, wind and rain for 2 hours to collect it.

The bad news is that your new license won't last for 10 years but will end when you are 70, so 3 years use only and they don't reduce the cost. Happened to me 2 years ago so I'll soon have to pay for another one in December! Plus the cost of an eye test (?) even though I no longer drive!

Earlier this year I had to renew my old paper job for the new type. I decided to use my nearest post office that fortunately did them to get the picture, it cost a couple of pounds more but the post office filled in all the forms and it took 3 days for the new license to arrive.

We have always had 10 year Driving Licences in NI. Interestingly if you are over 45 and have a HGV or bus the expiry date is every 5 years (because of the medical) ... so you ony get a valid driving licence for 5 years if you have your HGV on it. The DVA in Coleraine will renew it for free for the other 5 years, but remove the C+E or D categary, until you pass the medical.

I'm on my 4th licence now. My first paper provisional, my paper car licence, my first photocard when I passed my bike test, and the replacement for that after 10 years. I'm due another licence next year, presuming we've not moved to fully online by then.

Hi. I notice in comments that someone has said at 70 you have to do various things to drive 7.5 tons. To clarify, this is the C1E category. If you passed your test after 1998, you will have to pass a test to get the C1E, but if you were before that it came automatically till you were 70 when you then have to re apply for it. You will need the appropriate form from DVLA, then have an approved medical, plus a current eye test, current photo, and of course, a fee. On approval you will be able to drive a car and trailer, or a truck up to a gross weight ( total mass ) of 7.5tons,7500kgs. THIS WILL NEED RENEWING EVERY THREE YEARS, with the same type of application. As said already, check your licence on return, to make sure all your other entitlement are still on.

You failed to say why it runs out. It’s simply that your photo needs updating, not much point having a photo that’s of someone at 20 when they are now 65, so needs updating every 10 years so that it still resembles the person it belongs to.

The dates on the reverse of your licence covering your validity to drive certain categories are entirely relevant and not to be ignored. The date given on the front is the date of expiry of the document, NOT your licence to drive! Obviously, with a photo document there has to be an expiry date otherwise you could be driving round with a photo which may be 20 years out of date. So, just like a passport and for exactly the same reason, the document and therefore the photograph on it has to be renewed every 10 years!

Ray, its not actually the expiry of the document, its expiry of the earliest class to drive on the reverse of the card. My renewal is 2016 on the front, but the expiry date on the front is actually my HGV licence which is 2019, and listed in the classes on the reverse. As my licence was last renewed in 2016 i dont actually need to renew the card till 2026, which is not noted ANYWHERE on my licence. If i do a licence check with the DVLA it comfirms i am licenced to drive a car to 2030, when i reach 70.

Same issue with mine. Noticed it earlier this year, ‘cos the DVLA never reminded me of the need to renew the photo. Until I acquired the photocard one, I had one of the old paper ones which would have been valid until 70 - 1 day. As you say, it was £14 online via credit card, and as I had renewed my passport within a year, I let them know the details so they grabbed it from the Passport office, so they are identical now. Technically, its valid a bit longer than 10 years from when it was taken for the other lot, by a couple of months, and it just shows the 70 -1day number. Given when I did it online, they sent the new one presumably by first class post; almost all normal commercial traders use second class. Incidentally, I happen to know someone who is aware of the poor industrial relations in DVLA Morriston office at present. The other oddity is that in some parts of the world, if you use glasses for driving, you need a spare set, but on passports, they don’t let you wear them, so they don’t turn up on a licence card done the way I did - although I do normally wear them. Also worth noting that Passport renewals are now only issued for exactly 10 years - it used to be normal to ‘carry forward’ surplus months, and I always renewed early ‘cos many countries only accept them with at least 6 months left. So, it was a kind of back door tax rise.

I'm on my 3rd photocard licence now, which has annoyed me no end as my looks have hardly changed, and like you when I passed my test I was told I wouldn't have to renew until I was 70.

Past my driving test in 1963 but was allowed to drive upto 15ton etc but lost my heavy vehicle licence for 15 ton years ago and 4 yrs ago lost my right to drive vehicles upto 7.5 ton if I wanted them back have to show I drove one for 30hrs +

Renewing your licence is FREE when you are 70, you may go onto a website not DVLA which they will charge you for doing it. Make sure you only go to the DVLA site and not the first one that is listed on Google as they put the (ad) on the top searches. You may see (ad) by the side of the listing don't click on these.

I think there has been confusion between the expiry of the photograph and the driving entitlement. The reverse is the entitlement and the front the validity of the card itself.

My biggest disappointment when I renewed my licence on my 70th birthday was that my entitlement to drive anything bigger than a van was taken away. To now drive say, a three and a half ton Luton top lorry, I have to jump through extremely large hoops of application forms and medicals, plus this has to be carried out each year!

As long as you have applied for your licence, you can drive under section 88 of the road traffic act. Just done this for 6 months

They still dont send any reminders in 2024 ! Mine expired a few weeks ago, and I hadn't realised.. I only found out when my car dealership refused to give me a courtesy car and temporary insurance to cover it when they saw the expiry date on my licence. Now, I should have proactively checked it, but reminders from DVLA would be very helpful 😊

I don't know whether it is a New Zealand thing or an age thing, but my DL expires 20 years after the initial issue date, and even though I added a motorcycle enforcement 10 years later the expiry date for both motorcycle and car is the same.

It really makes sense as it has a photograph if you pass when you are 17 you will look a bit different when you are 40.

also well worth checking that upon reaching 70 yrs the C1 cat drops off, so if your motorhome is over 3.5 tonne you cannot use it legally, and yet agin the DVLA dont warn or tell you about this, I dont know how you are able to get the C! reinstalled ?

I renewed mine way back in 2015, but I can't recall if I received a reminder to do so. I think I must have, but how it came I've no idea. I know that it was pretty painless and I did it online.

the date on the front only applies to the Photo expiration, you need to renew your photo, the license is valid to the date on the back, I got that info by speaking to the DVLV on the phone in September 21.

In Ireland the driving licence expires 10 years from when you got it front and on the back the paper licence was the same
