*RE EXTERNAL SOUNDS* Hello ladies and gents! For whatever reason, the external sounds of the aircraft didn't come across very well in this video (I think it's something to do with the way the C170 and replay I use were interacting). In actuality, the external sounds of the C170B are rather nice. I have created a short video illustrating this at various stages of flight (I will also link this video in the review): kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6uUoGRpmKeVd8U All the best : )

Nice review for the most part very proper on real life procedures. When idling older engines originally made for 100LL try to idle at 1000rpm or so as low idle for extended periods adds to possible spark plug & valve fouling though not a problem in a sim. It is for real older engines. I use 90 oct ethanol free auto gas, have for years in my Piper Tri-Pacer. Also lean during your run up in high altitude areas for optimum power before take you'll need every ounce of it at very high altitude airport. Their are taildraggers that are quite tame like the Aeronca Champ and the Citabria. I don't know about the 170 as I have never flown a real one but in the air they should handle like a straight tail 172
@IntotheBlueSimulations3 жыл бұрын
Hi Isaac, thanks very much! Regarding your comments, I’m just wondering whether you were referencing the video specifically, or whether it was just general advice? I believe I did idle at 1,000rpm (initially I was at 800rpm for the warmup, but that was as per the checklist) and lean for the taxi / takeoff hehe? As with many of these types of aircraft, I certainly wouldn’t profess to be an expert; I try and use airmanship and follow the checklists to the best of my ability where I can though. It may well be that you know a lot more than me about these more vintage birds. . . You have a Tri-Pacer in the real world? That must be a lovely aircraft to fly? : ) All the best!
@williamleadbetter96863 жыл бұрын
@@IntotheBlueSimulations yes I have an old Tri-pacer. I belong to the short wing piper club. There is a beautiful Cessna 170 at Red steward airfield in Ohio. The family teaches taildragging flying to the public thats where I got my tail dragged endorsement. Though I did not fly the 170 its privately owned not a rental. Though I have flown a 172. And there is a gorgeous 140 at mountain empire airport in Virginia named "the other women" The ground handling of aircraft in msfs tail taildragger or not is a bit touchy and many of them are way to hard to control. Harder is not aways more realistic. Take the P-40B offered by big radial. Now go look up the "Flying Tiger Flight Manual on the P-40" it was an easy plane to take off and land with very little tail swing by their own admission. Get in the sim and its a monster. Now where is this more atrocious that DCS world. Their ww2 piston engine airplanes are beasts & if they were really that hard to handel insurance will not cover them anywhere near the public at airshow like they do. Too much of a dangerous liability. I love the old art deco airplanes of the 30's, 40''s and 50's. Of course I hope the Tri-pacer makes it but a Spartan Executive would be just plain awesome, it was the lear jet of its era. Let's hope & see. Cheers friend and if you aren't a real pilot yet but want to do it in a taildragger it will make you a better pilot
@williamleadbetter96863 жыл бұрын
@@IntotheBlueSimulations the 1000rpm idle thing is for real life operations and its just to keep deposits building up in the older 80 octane rated engines but it is a double edge sword concept because if not watched you can build up too high of a taxi speed if left unattended. You handled the 170 very smooth a nicely especially that beautiful landing. The Tri-pacer i own is very hard to land smoothly with a chop & drop type of approach. One must do a stable approach with gentle throttle step down BUT IT'S NOT HARD AT ALL. Now the most important thing to check as soon as you start up is OIL PRESURE make sure you have it right away. You'd be surprised how many repair shops have burned up engines over the years that THEY have worked on after forgetting to put oil in it and not checking oil pressure on start up. It's your very last line of defense before flight as you should of always check the oil dipstick & fuel before each flight as a part of your preflight checks.

Ah well I’m envious, that must be a lovely machine to own and fly! : D I very much agree re the state of taildraggers in MSFS (as well as some other sims). As you say, difficult doesn’t necessarily = accurate. WWII would have been a very brief conflict, if the aircraft had been as difficult to get off the ground in real life, as they are in the sim. In MSFS’ case, it’s definitely an area where the sim itself is still wanting (though things do slowly seem to be improving). I don’t have a tailwheel rating, though it’s certainly something I would like to do at some point. I have a little bit of time in the Cub and CAP10 though - so I do have some appreciation of the handling characteristics. I used to enjoy the Alabeo Tri-Pacer, so I’m hoping we’ll see it in MSFS at some point. Would be lovely for cruising around. Thanks for sharing. All the best! : )

That’s disappointing to hear Kalyn. I don’t have an issue with ports per se, but at least iron out the bugs haha! The sounds I think are quite nice. Excellent review and a whimsical trip to snap the bears. You nailed Carenado's reputation to the barn door in an altogether decent way. What a shame. Beauty is really only skin deep. Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed the little bear hunt : ) Yeah, I really do think it’s a shame, for themselves as much as anything. Like you, I’ve tangoed with Carenado many times over the years and it’s been a bit hit and miss (although I always felt they got more derision than was deserved overall). The quality of their MSFS work (minus the bugs) has been such, that they could really cement themselves as the leaders of the mid-range addon market. They have been very good with updates so far and generally the bugs do get ironed out; but if they’re capable of that, then why not just get the product to that state before release?? As I say, they’re really just shouting themselves in the foot! Anyway, after all these years, they probably aren’t about to turn over a new leaf haha. So long as they keep it up with the patches / updates, I won’t feel too hard done by personally. Still, certainly no harm holding on to your $15 dollars for now. Maybe take a look again over Christmas, when it’ll most likely be $7 ; ) Thanks very much once again. All the best!

Hi Duke, Everything you need for the Teddy Bears picnic, you will find in the sim by default (and in fact, it’s even better now, as Asobo subsequently gave us a handcrafted version of Lake Tahoe airport). If you make sure you have “Fauna” turned on in your World Map display options, you should be able to spot the bears and that will give you a good idea of where you need to head on your flight (the bears can be a bit tricky to spot and they move around a bit, but finding them is half the fun I guess ; ) I hope that helps a little? Another great review! Whenever I see a new product pop up I wait to see if you put up a review first. C170 looks interesting and I enjoy flying the C152. Always enjoyed those “not quite WW2 and not quite glass cockpit”-inbetween tech airplanes. Eg the M20 Ovation I really love. But with these apparent, and obvious, issues with the C170 I think this will be a pass for me. I’m thinking what else is awry under the hood that we don’t obviously see if they couldn’t even identify the obvious issues with the plane. Carenado needs to step up their quality in that regard. I’m not flying to look at pretty seats and seatbelts, so excellent texturing counts for nothing if the core of the product has flaws. Only way to let them know though is to not put up the money for the product. Seems very hit and miss with Carenado products for MSFS and I don’t like a product purchase to be a gamble. Thanks for taking the time to do the review though!
@IntotheBlueSimulations3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much (both for the comment and considering the channel when it comes to new products etc)! Same as you, I like a bit of post-war technology. Anything really, up until G1000s started to take over haha. The C170 is certainly in my wheelhouse. Totally understand where you’re coming from though. So far I haven’t seen any evidence of Carenado “pulling a fast one” as they sometimes used to do, but they keep shooting themselves in the foot a little, with this sloppy quality control (most of the bugs I tend to find with their stuff are glaringly obvious). That being said; personally I can tolerate a few bugs, so long as they are fixed in short order. With MSFS, Carenado do seem to have been quite proactive in this regard so far. The aircraft is actually very pleasant fly, so they got that right. Another day or two of polishing it up and I could have given it a glowing review! As you say though, you don’t want to play Russian roulette when purchasing. Always worth revisiting over Christmas, see what sort of a state it’s in then (as it will most likely be 50% off). Thank you John! Haha indeed! I did an F1-style pit stop for some fresh tyres before landing. It’s an issue with every taildragger more or less. The C170 is certainly better than a lot of others, but the waaay overly sensitive rudder kind of makes it equally difficult to control haha. A real pain as you say. Noted for the C140. It’s certainly in my wheelhouse, but I’m a bit on the fence about whether to pick it up, as obviously it offers a somewhat similar experience to the 170. I love the aircraft, to be honest. I love the ruggedness of it. The pronounced yaw on take off is a pain but you get used to it. Cheers James! It’s funny, I was never taught to lean on the ground at any of the flying schools I’ve been to, but it seems to be a very prevalent practice elsewhere. Never had any issues with fouled plugs myself, but always operated from sea-level and spent reasonably short amounts of time on the ground etc. Certainly at the sort of altitudes in this video, I’d imagine it would be prudent / necessary. Carb heat before takeoff was actually mentioned in the C170 checklist; I think the only reason I neglected to do that, was again it wasn’t something I habitually did when I learnt previously. Seems quite a bit may have changed since I learnt to fly. . . All the best! : )

Seems pretty decent. Carenado certainly do a lot better with the more simpler planes than more complex ones if history with FSX/P3D is anything to go by so I guess they can't really go wrong with a 170! Well aside from the small bugs they always seem to have on release as you mentioned. I probably would've bought this if Aeroplane Heaven didn't come out with their 140 around the same time. I bought the 140 and am quite pleased with it, the addition of floats in the 140 really sold me on it as I'm a big fan of the more nautical side of aviation. I also really quite like the different cockpit colour variations in the 140 and really dig the more retro looking 'piano' switches it has which gives it almost a kinda art deco feel. Not to say that the Carenado 170 is crap, from your review it does look pretty good, but as the differences between the 140 and 170 are quite small (more seats and a bit more powerful engine in the 170 iirc) I shan't bother with the 170. Not that there's anything wrong with having both in the sim, more variety is always great and it's kinda cool seeing the evolution of the platform from 140-150-170-172 but I'm happy with what I have for now. Thanks for the review. As always with you it's top stuff, informative and entertaining. I quite enjoyed your little wildlife walkabout. I'll sometimes have a bit of a walkabout in drone view myself. Despite its many problems MSFS can be quite stunning and immersive. I've ended up with quite a bit of a backlog of your videos so you'll probably have to put up with some more of my rambling comments as I catch up over the next day or two. Oh and I'd love to have even more single engined tail draggers in the sim! The more the merrier in my opinion. I'd do indecent things for an Auster Autocrat and/or its many variants!
@IntotheBlueSimulations3 жыл бұрын
Yes, overall it’s another very nice effort from Carenado. They still haven’t released anything with a clean slate, but their MSFS stuff has been very decent so far. As you say, the real test will be when they move on to something a little more complex! I’d love to see their SAAB, F27, or Shorts 330/360 in the sim, but I do hope they don’t slip back into their old ways, when they start modelling their more complex aircraft. Haha, well I went the other way from you. Skipped the AH C140, as I already owned the C170 (which was slightly more up my alley aesthetically and I do enjoy having just a little bit more power most of the time). I think they’re pretty much on a par with one another overall, although some floats would be nice yes (I’ve really been getting into that sort of flying of late as well)! I love MSFS for the opportunities and adventures it brings. It has its faults for sure, but it’s the only sim (I feel) where one can truly explore and “experience” the many facets of flight. It’s great for creating little stories like this etc. Haha, no worries on the comments! I appreciate every one of them and it’s one of the aspects I enjoy of having the channel : ) Hehe, maybe I misspoke. I’m always happy to see another taildragger, but I would love to see some turboprops, vintage aircraft, military trainers etc starting to come into the sim as well. Great Maxime, very happy to hear that you enjoyed it! : ) The bugs are a shame. They didn’t really ruin my enjoyment, but they did sour my first impressions somewhat. Haha, well I maybe misspoke on that one, I love these types of aircraft as much as the next person! What I really meant, is that it would be nice to see a little more variety in terms of aircraft types coming into the sim. With the “quirky” physics of taildraggers in the sim at the moment, it would better (in my humble opinion) to take a little break with taildraggers and start developing them again once the issues with the sim are resolved. That being said, this was one of the better taildraggers I’ve flown in the sim to date. . . Thanks again, all the best!

I agree! It was a running commentary; I know early on in the flight I said the flight model felt “fairly simple”, but that was having only done the takeoff, climb and cruise. An overly-sensitive rudder, no yaw induced by the engine effects and no adverse yaw did make it feel a bit simple initially. As I went through the flight though, I very much came to enjoy the little C170 and thought it modelled much of the fundamentals rather well (as indeed I stated). I did specifically mention the flight model during the conclusion, as being one of the positive points of the product : ) All the best!

We're seeing a lot of that. Seems everyone is rushing to get their planes out on the marketplace, warts and all, and applying the "we'll fix it up later" mindset. Maybe they are worried someone else is working on the same make and model of plane and might beat them to the punch? Not sure.

Yes, sadly we are Grobut. It seems to be a bit of a modern mentality generally now, particularly in software / game development. I think this one was rushed out a little, to compete with the Aeroplane Heaven C140. @@IntotheBlueSimulations I get how it happens with games. These companies have investors, shareholders and publishers who are expecting the game to drop on time, share prices might take a hit without those expected quarterly earnings, and they certainly don't want that. It's the rather unfortunately reality of publicly traded companies, it's nolonger about the company, it's nolonger good enough to put out a solid product and stay in the black, now it's all about constant growth, because that's how peoples shares become more valuable, and that's all the shareholders care about. That's also why there's been this massive push to deliver us less of a game, and then sell us the rest of it as DLC. It's not good enough for a game to be profitable, it needs to be more profitable than the last one, or there's no growth, and without growth you get angry shareholders. The outfits making planes for FS though, are they even big enough to be publicly traded or have investors? I'm not really sure why they would feel the need to push these planes out before they are ready (some of them it's minor bugs, a couple of days more work and they could probably have fixed it, so why the rush?). Unless of course, there's some behind the scenes deal going on between them and Asobo/MS that we don't know about, which might include deadlines. I woulden't rule that possibillity out, some sort of "partner program" scheme or similar, we've seen those before.

Yeah, very much agree with you on all of that Homeworx. Sadly it doesn’t seem like there’s any sort of quality control going on in the Marketplace. I don’t include the C170 in this statement in any way, shape, or form; but there are a couple of really crappy, overpriced products on the Marketplace. Personally I’m averse to Asobo dictating which products can or can’t be sold (different people have different tastes), but I do think there needs to be a much more comprehensive ratings / review system. A score out of 5 doesn’t give much scope for feedback on a product (and those scores don’t even work for me half the time any way). Anyway, re the C170; the bugs are a little frustrating yes. I do expect to see them fixed though. A very enjoyable product nonetheless and good value at the price Carenado are asking. All the best! : )

Does it or does it not support VR cockpit focus mode? A total deal breaker when it doesn't. Each plane needs one VR user to purchase it and hopefully reveal via a forum, that it has or has not been implemented. A little bit of a shame, but I’m glad you’re enjoying the aircraft otherwise - I sill enjoy a flight in it every now and then myself. Happy flying! : )

Hi Graham, Yes, I’m afraid I wasn’t really planning on covering the AH C140, namely because I feel the two aircraft look to be broadly similar in terms of quality, but at €30, the C140 is a little bit pricey in my opinion. From what I’ve seen, I think either aircraft is a decent enough purchase, the only major issue with the C140 seems to be that the internal sounds are way too loud at the moment (and both aircraft suffer the same issue re the battery running flat). Obviously the C170 is a bit more powerful and speedy, but I think really the choice between the two comes down to personal preference. All this being said, I may yet cover the C140 haha, but it probably wouldn’t be in the immediate future at any rate (JF Warrior is probably next on the list). Sorry I can’t be of more help on this one Graham. All the best! : )

@IntotheBlueSimulations3 жыл бұрын
Ah, haha, that was a trick of editing. The aircraft has / had (I’m not sure, since I haven’t had a chance to try the update yet) a bug with the tundra tyre versions, where the right main landing gear collapsed on landing; so I had to switch it out for the regular version at a couple of points during the review. @IntotheBlueSimulations3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the rudder sensitivity definitely needs some work (and it has been long enough now that you would think they might have addressed it - although in fairness I have no idea how fundamental the problem is / isn’t in terms of the sims core workings). I have a pretty whacking big curve in my sensitivity of -50. Does the trick for some aircraft, but others (the C170 included) are still overly sensitive. I’m sure it will get sorted eventually. The CHT gauge is definitely a bug, it's happening to everyone. I haven't noticed any stuttering etc from the engine though myself. Not sure what could be causing that (as I don't believe any complex engine behaviors are modelled). A lot of aircraft in the sim don't like to have their engines running right back at idle it seems (which is actually quite realistic), so if you are sitting for long periods, try idling at 1,000rpm (if you aren't already) - hopefully that helps. @@IntotheBlueSimulations Thanks, I ended up buying it. The default aircraft were not too bad, but the overly sensitive elevator and especially the incorrect performance and fuel values were starting to bug me. We don't have access to the community mods that fix these issues on console, doubt we ever will. I trust Carenado would at least get the engine and fuel performance correct... What a difference, I can actually reset my pitch and roll axis to the default sensitivity and still have smooth control, feels right to me. The only thing that is spoiling my enjoyment is the default camera they have set up, the aircraft already has such a low nose when cruising that it feels really weird, feels like I'm flying a Robinson helicopter aha. Having the default camera pointing so far down throws everything off, I can tilt it back up, but as soon as I try to pan the camera left or right it starts to raise my view even more because the geometry is all out of whack. It's going to take some getting used to, I'll say that. Edit: Forgot to mention, their seems to be a sound looping issue at engine cruise, either that or they've modeled a misfire into it.

@IntotheBlueSimulations3 жыл бұрын
Gah, that’s frustrating (that you’re still seeing an issue). Really appreciate the feedback again though Jeremy, thanks! I’m still, trying to nail down what it could be. The sim is almost certainly at least partly to blame, it just hasn’t been as smooth for me since World Update 5. It seems there’s also a fair bit of degradation between recording and the video making it on to KZbin. I watched some of the raw video back and it’s definitely smoother than the KZbin version. As I haven’t changed my editing software, I’m inclined to say maybe the KZbin compression has gotten worse once again (I noticed in my latest P3D video, the stuttering was appalling - yet the raw recorded footage was nowhere near as bad). I use Shadowplay for recording and always have (so unless the latest set of drivers is causing it, I can’t see that that would be the problem). Anyway, as I think I may have mentioned previously; I think I will hold out until the next sim update, supposedly that’s going to bring big performance gains. If it still doesn’t do the trick, then I think it will be time for a system upgrade. Of course I want to make videos that you guys all enjoy and I know how frustrating / miserable it can be watching a stuttery video! Thanks very much once again. Yeah, likewise WhiteHawk. I remember us discussing it during the DC-6 video. At the time I put it down to the DC-6 being a complex and FPS hungry aircraft, but it seems that wasn’t the only gremlin in the system! It does seem as though people started mentioning this around World Update 5, so I think the sim is at least partially to blame. As per my reply to Jeremy, I am trying to troubleshoot the problem. Even had the PC apart today; cleaned out the fans, new thermal paste on the heat sink etc (hadn’t done that in years). Fiddled around a bit with the sim settings. V-Sysnc @ 30fps does seem to smooth it out somewhat, but that’s not ideal. . . I’m planning on holding out until the next sim update, as supposedly it’s going to bring big performance gains (standing by for another graphical downgrade haha). If it’s not enough to get me back to where I was before, then I guess it will be time for a system upgrade. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated!

Awesome! Super happy to hear it and thanks very much for taking the time to have a look. Yeah, unfortunately this is with the frame-rate locked at 30 (a little bit tragic, giving that I’m only running in 1080p). It’s certainly noticeable on my end. TrackIR doesn’t feel as smooth, neither does the drone cam, but if the end result is a better video, I’ll live with it for now. As I say, hoping it’s just a temp fix until the next update. The sim has gone backwards for me quite a bit in terms of performance. I used to run it with VSync off and that gave nice smooth flying (60-70fps). One of the updates ruined that (UK update I think), because all of a sudden the screen was now tearing with VSync off (where it wasn’t before). So VSync and 60fps was my preferred option for some time, but it seems since the last update, that is no longer feasible now either. . . Again, hopefully this update on the 27th will go a significant way to improving things. Thanks very much for your time once again WhiteHawk, all the best!

And there is no tag in the marketplace which notifies customers of a problem.

Hi Jerry, That is indeed a shame. Carenado seem to have gone a bit quiet in general of late (with the release of their 337 also due some time “soon”). It’s always hard to know with Carenado modules, whether it’s Carenado taking their time with a fix, or Asobo taking their time to upload it (the former I would suspect in this case). Yes, I must admit, I didn’t really investigate the GPS all that much with the C170. I generally try and avoid using default avionics whenever I can and I prefer to fly without a GPS most of the time also; so I simply removed it and didn’t give it too much thought thereafter - of course it would have been better to give it a once-over, for the sake of the review. Ok Martin, Well it would be a little bit difficult to cover everything here in detail, but essentially you want to use it; whenever you’re using a low throttle setting whilst airborne, periodically in the cruise (to check for any icing) and any time you suspect carb icing (usually indicated by a loss of RPM / manifold pressure, or rough running from the engine). Conversely, you want to avoid using it at high power settings, as this can in fact damage the engine. In the sim carb icing is not a big issue at the moment, but some developers do model it (A2A for example) and it’s a good habit to get into. Basically any time you come back from a cruise power setting, you probably want to use carb heat as well. I found a good article here, that explains it all quite thoroughly: www.pilotfriend.com/training/flight_training/fxd_wing/carb_heat.htm Hope that all helps a bit! All the best : )

For what it's worth John, the C170 does indeed sound a whole lot nicer in actuality (I think my replay tool was producing the weird distortion of the sound). I've put together a small clip to accurately demonstrate the aircrafts sounds: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6uUoGRpmKeVd8U All the best : )

Haha! I’m far too much of a wimp for that. . . In reality, if I’d even glimpsed a bear, I’d have about-turned and been back up in the air before he’d even had time to look up from his lunch XD

Understandable Chris. I do think (for the most part) Carenado have upped their game since coming into MSFS, but I’ve no doubt some of their past behaviours and practices have put a lot of people off purchasing from them again. Quite a bit more choice out there on the MSFS market asides from Carenado now anyway : ) All the best!
