Great review. Just wondering if you put the trailer dimensions on to the Defender 110 infotainment, it helps the suspension to adjust to your load for better towing. I've got the 110 P400 and I'm currently towing an off-road caravan with a DO35 Hitch with no wheel cover, so I don't have the issues you did. Plus, I travel solo, so the towing camera is perfect for hitching on. I get around 18-19 litres/100km on the open road. Would have loved to see the V8 110 out there again. I have a Y62 and love that unit more than anything I've ever owned, but this video has raised 2 points for me. Firstly, I'm surprised at the SAG factor, because it's a common feeling among Y62 owners that they NEED stiffer rated springs or airbags to tow a half decent load, yet in this test it performed very well in that respect. 2nd is that the Defender shocked me with its performance, and purchase price and drive satisfaction aside, I'd happily concede that it's a better tow vehicle. Very impressed.

These 4 cly models especially, change up gears too early when towing. If worked manually I think most would have reached 100 if left in a lower gear and used a few more revs. Example, the MUX changed up about 700rpm below the redline and then fell into a power hole. Even a diesel needs to rev to get hp towing at speed and up hills.

I've ordered a Pajero Sport GXL. Will not be towing a 2800kg van. I think the lesson for those vans that wobbled around and struggled with the heavy trailer, tow a lighter trailer or buy a heavier and more powerful, and thus more expensive towing vehicle. I'd take Patrol or Landcruiser over Landrover when comes to towing because boot door. Top opening doors allows you open it with trailer attached also makes reversing so much easier especially boat down a ramp where you see where it is tracking. This is why I prefer wagons over utes. Relibility wise best sell Defender before factory warranty runs out. Patrol extra fuel costs can be offset against lower service and purchase price compared to Landcruiser. $20k buys lot of fuel can also add $1000 a year from 5% interest that extra $20k could be earning if invested or $1500 if you have to borrow money. Like piece on vehicle payload, people forget to add trailer's drawbar weight when calculating this.

I currently own a Skoda Enyaq IV80x which is a full electric & tows very well & stable with all that low down weight its very stable & has loads of torque. One of my interesting jobs was contract harvesting from Roma Qld to Horsham Vic. Our support vehicle was a Toyota LC Ute 4ltr 6cyl, but all this was back in '87. I have a 2011 RR TDV8 which I use for towing my daughter's horsebox and our local AD offered me a Defender 110 with the V6 engine - like the one you tested - for a long weekend. The RR is a great tow car so I was a bit sceptical at how the drop in torque would work but I was very surprised at how well it performed. Yes, the Defender doesn't have the RR's road presence and doesn't make you feel as special when you're driving it but it's a very capable car and if I were replacing my RR I'd definitely consider it.

Great Video. One thing to add to the video would have been reversing, Maneuverability and vision from mirrors with larger trailers. I currently own a D300 110 Defender and tow a car on a trailer regularly. Have to agree with the comments. I've never had an issue with the tow hitch hitting the rear wheel though. A Handy point with the Air suspension for long tail trailers, being able to lower the Car (raising the rear of the trailer) when negotiating steep approach angles to reverse up steep drive ways. This is priceless. Prior to the Defender, I towed with a Skoda Kodiaq RS (diesel version) and I have to say it towed even better than the Defender (particularly in reversing maneuvers) Vision from the side mirrors was excellent and torque and economy for a little 4 Cylinder it was amazing even accelerating when overtaking up some of the inclines of the Hume Highway back from Golborne into Sydney and an average fuel economy under for 10L/100km round trip Sydney --> Marulan and back. Great Video.

Looks to be a nice package, but really needs the turbo diesel back, or the new straight 6 turbo, or V8. Little surprised the Everest V6, while it did reasonably well, didn’t perform a bit higher too.

It'd be nice to see towing reviews and roof weights for medium SUVs, including hybrids.
@rsr20t Жыл бұрын
iterestingly, recently went to put a rack system on the roof of my car, after accounting for the Rack weight of 60kg, It only left 40kg of additonal payload weight, was better (and cheaper) to just put traditional roof racks on. As with Towing, Roof Racks are something that are often over loaded.

From USA here, would have loved to see LC 200 with the old 5.7. Own a Toyota Tundra with the 5.7 and 4.30 rear end, just pulls for days. Even with an 8000lb RV behind it pulled very well up the Poconos going up the mountains. Overall great Video!

So you put the Rexton in Power mode with the large trailer but not the LC300 (Sport). You should be using either Normal or Sport/Power on all vehicles rather than different modes on different vehicles. Also with the Rexton cruise-control, might have been best to just manually change it down a gear to hold the speed. I think you’d find it difficult with the 3500kg max towing vehicles to actually tow that with the family on board. In many cases you can only have the driver and ½ a tank of fuel before you’re overweight. But anyway. With the Defender you can disable the Access Height on power off when you are towing and re-enable it after. Most people don’t tow every day. Would have been nice to test with the P400 Defender 110 also. In the section at the end - probably should note that’s GVM also includes the towball down weight. (Though it was touched on in the Pajero Sport breakdown example). Lastly - can’t wait to see V8 Defender, Discovery 5 and Range Rover.

Yes, you’re right. Shouldn’t make much of a difference - at full throttle the drive mode is irrelevant.

A couple of suggestions: 1) As you did the tow test with a 2800kg trailer with 280kg towball weight it would have been good to have done a run through of the vehicle weights using a 2800kg trailer as a reference; 2) It would been good to see that wider camera view of all the vehicles as they went through the bumpy section with the trailer attached. Other than that I thought it was a great video and will be recommended as reference to many when I'm asked about picking a tow vehicle.

The Land Rover is $40k more than the top of the range Everest V6. Can’t see the value in the extra $40k. I was surprised in the stopping distance. Anything above 40m is unacceptable in my opinion. Good comparison. Still waiting on the 7 seat SUV test. The ones that don’t have proper off-road capabilities. Ones like the CX8, Sorrento, Santa Fe, CX9, Tiguan, outlander and kluger

I’ve watched this and the off road test. I’d expect something like the Land Rover to do well considering it’s pedigree and also new tech that has developed over the past 10 years in drivetrains and electronic assistance systems. What I find hugely commendable is how well the Patrol did on both, especially considering the age of the platform and the length of its run cycle. Almost disappointing that other brand new platforms with greater tech are only just beating it, if at all. I’d buy a Patrol before a LR based on reputation and reliability. If only Nissan could bring the dash etc into 2023!😁

What a great comparison for us it is the best I have ever seen. I am primarily interested in fuel efficiency at constant load eg towing at highway conditions, so, If you were to do another test. I would like to see a test done with the dyno trailer at 3 different loads at 100 and 80 km/hr . and to record the fuel usage when towing your loaded trailer under real world conditions.

Great comparison and some interesting results. I tow a 2.5t van with a Pajero Sport and upgraded suspension. Its not a speed demon and I reckon the extra 300lg you were towing would be very noticeable. As for the towing limits of all these vehicles they're all pipe dreams. If you tow at each vehicles respective limits then your vehicle payload is often reduced to driver and passenger and not much else. Serious issue of safety also with a 2.5t vehicle towing 3.5t.
@StephenFogarty2023 Жыл бұрын
Agree But, it isn’t illegal to tow 3.5 T, with a 2.5 T vehicle, if the vehicle is tow rated up to 3.5 T. 🤷🏻♂️ Both the Patrol and Defender can be at GVM, and still tow 3.5 T Payload of Patrol and Defender is decent. But, if u have a tow ball down weight of 350 kg, and a lot of accessories on the vehicle, then u still need to be very careful to not go over GVM, once u add passengers and luggage etc..

Great overview. But what would be great n informative, is that to plug in a OBD2, so that could monitor all thr parameters such as engine oil temp, coolant temp, n gbox temp.

A comprehensive test with great consideration to experimental design. And mentions of little things like the effect of GPS speed vs indicated cruise control 100km/h on fuel economy showed you were thinking about some of the variables which are difficult to eliminate. Kudos. I tow with an old Audi SQ7. Effortless performance and outstanding fuel economy from a car worth way less than some of those on test.

Hi Great test and nice engineering approach. I have found it very difficult to find information such as the GVM, payload, GCM etc for many vehicles. It doesn't seem to be easily findable on the manufacturers' websites. Are you able to somehow advise the information for each of the 4WDs that you tested. This is an important safety issue, and I think the industry doesn't take it seriously.

Am I the only one that was pleasantly surprised with the Grand Cherokee's steep slope climb ? It accelerated very well and was keeping on going. The Pentastar is very reliable as well, Getty Adventures (heavy duty mechanic) made 2 interesting vids about this engine. It bviously isn't a very good towing vehicle as of now, but at least as a car it ticks many boxes.
