I am happy to see someone tested it in extreme conditions and showed how it performed in real life. Unlike petrol engines, which can consistently deliver their peak power, in many electric cars, the peak power can be 2 or 3 times their normal power. However, this peak power only lasts for a few minutes before overheating. Manufacturers don't typically mention in ads whether the power is peak or constant and how long it lasts (5 seconds? 30 minutes? 2 hours?). The 145 kW wouldn't last long since the battery is only 1.8 kWh. As for the generator, I'm not sure, but I think I saw somewhere that it's only 45 kW. We know that at speeds less than 60 km/h, only the electric motor pushes the car (the petrol engine only works as a generator and doesn't engage to wheels before 80 km/h). So generally, at low speeds, you have a maximum of 100 kW from the electric motor, and if the battery runs out, you only have around 45 kW max (limited by the generator). However, I understand that this hybrid systems are not designed for the track where you can constantly use its 145 kW. It is useful for running on electric at low speeds to avoid the drawbacks of the petrol engine and gearbox and for running on petrol at high speeds to avoid the limitations of the battery. Some peak performance is available for a short time when needed (overtake).

A really good review. The demonstration of the power delivery issues from the hybrid drivetrain was very clear. The old MG3 had one thing going for it. Price. how does it run out of battery? doesn't it get recharged by the petrol subsystem ? isn't that meant to be the main benefit of a hybrid?
@peterj57515 ай бұрын
Easy. It recharges the battery when you decelerate and uses charge when accelerating. Given that the electric motor appears to supply 50% of the total power output and the battery is small, if you spend too much time using the throttle heavily, it appears it can fully discharge the battery. In other words, it is depleting the charge quicker than it is recharging it. It will recover of course but for performance driving clearly you will run out of battery charge at times.
@ghisalaura71234 ай бұрын
@@peterj5751 hello, can u please explain me better how it charges, i don ' t understand much about this technology, juste ordered it and still waiting, but i wanted to know more untill i'll drive it, so it cherges only when decreasing? i will use it more in the city with small velocity, like 50,60, so how can i act for having it charged most of the time? thank u for your kind answer
@peterj57514 ай бұрын
@@ghisalaura7123 cars like this use the normal petrol motor and the electric motor together to accelerate the car. How much of each depends on a whole lot of things including the power demanded and the state of charge of the battery. But ultimately if you demand full power you are draining the battery. When you are decelerating it is recharging the battery and it will depend on how it’s programmed to how it recharges the battery when cruising at steady speed. Obviously this particular car is set up in such a way that you can drain the battery if you drive it very hard around a track like they did here. It will recharge itself quickly enough when you stop driving with a heavy throttle and it is probably not any problem in normal driving.
@makispps2 ай бұрын
It's a joke really. In order to advertise ~200HP they messed up the charging of the battery. It gives away too much KW on full throttle so the engine cannot provide enough energy to both recharge and push the car at full throttle. So it's easy to discharge the battery and have massive differences in 0-100 (From 7secs to 12secs) and also not enough power when pressing the throttle from 50 or 60mph. This can be dangerous and very confusing. The gearbox plays a role too, second gear is so long that it slows the acceleration, combined with loss of kw from the battery, sometimes the acceleration suddenly stops to practically almost none. They really need to address this issues.

3 speed transmission is because in low speed the car drives exclusively on battery, the engine will only kick in when it's over 40km/h but only to generate electricity for the electric motor. The gear will only be useful when the speed is 80 or over. Although I must agree that this 3 speed set up is flawed as when the battery is depleted the car will have problems with its power delivery due to the less than powerful engine and 3 speed transmission.

I’d rather pay a tiny bit extra for a base model Yaris Hybrid and here’s why: - Yaris CVT transmission is way smoother than the old 3 speed the MG3 uses. - Toyota known for reliability, can’t say the same for MG - Better hybrid system for less fuel consumption and also happily takes 91, not 95 - Strong resale value because it’s a Toyota. Don’t get me wrong - MG has improved significantly with the new MG3 however the price increase for the hybrid brings it close to its (much better) rivals. If this was $24,990 drive away it would sell like hotcakes.

Ok so it's got a long warranty, AA and ACP and it's cheaper than a Vw Polo. But good grief, 3sp auto No split folding rear seat Seats don't fold flat No reach adjustment No adjustable boot floor I thought the Chinese flaunt copyright laws and would copy good ideas from something like a 2009 Polo but no, they haven't.

The price pushes it close to MG 4 territory, especially with government rebates for EVs.

In my country, this will probably completely kill the MG4. Sales of the MG4 last November 466 and 622 in December. May 2024? 18! I believe the MG3 even with its flaws will now push those numbers to zero!

May I ask, why do you only test the lane keeping assist systems at 70? The highway speed of 100 or 110km/h would be better as that’s where you’d be using it wouldn’t you?

Imagine how scary it is to pass trucks with this car. You never really know how much power you'll have
@craigsampson33865 ай бұрын
I was thinking this too, its the equivalent of an ICE car dropping a cylinder or 2 mid over take and leaving you in a very awkward and/or dangerous situation if you'll have enough road/time to finish the over taking, or pull back in behind the truck (if somebody else hasn't already filled the gap you just left).

Been driving it here for 5 weeks in the UK. If you hoon it about like a hot hatch you run into these issues as shown in the video. But in normal driving when you want to overtake something you have the full power as the battery doesn't deplete as between overtakes you are using low power so the battery charges. So if you want a cheap hot hatch replacement this is definitely not it. But if you drive it normally and need a bit of poke for an overtake before settling back to normal driving this does an ok job. It feels more reassuring than a Yaris hybrid when overtaking.

lol 3 speed, and here I thought the 90s 4 speed in the previous model was already ancient enough, apparently not for MG 😂

It's essentially like 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. It doesn't need 1st and 2nd as the electric motor covers that bit. In normal day to driving it's fine.

@zhanhonglu9035 ай бұрын
You are hilarious. The 3-gear system and the ones from the 70s are worlds apart, using new technology. Just look at Toyota. Some cars are marked with 2 gears-does that mean you'll laugh at Australia's favorite, Toyota? If the badge were swapped to Toyota, would you then call it a perfect new technology? Let me tell you, Japanese cars are now lagging behind. You must have heard about the recent scandal where Japanese car manufacturers falsified the airbag deployment times, right?
@MecTecher5 ай бұрын
Except it’s not. Most CVTs are classed as 1 or 2 gears because they can vary the transmission. This 3 speed is a Trimatic - a GM product from the 70s last seen in the VL Commodore. They probably used it because it’s cheap and due to SAIC working with GM
