We wanted to use the ramp door on our cargo trailer camper conversion unit as a back deck to add some more usable space to the camper. This is a video of the installation of the hardware to make it work.

Nice Job.... I am in the process of converting an 8x16 v-nose cargo trailer into an RV and Mobile Sign Shop. I am just starting the walls and cabinet construction. I just sold a 15-passenger shuttle bus that I lived in for 3 years and traveled out west during the winters. I had to sell the shuttle bus because I purchased a large format color printer to make contour cut decals/stickers, koozies, t-shirts, magnetics, banners, mousepads, etc. The large format color printer would have taken up a lot of storage space so I needed to get something bigger. I did a complete conversion series on the shuttle bus from the ground up and now am doing a new series on the cargo trailer conversion. They are on my YT channel.

I want to do this too. When I bought my trailer, and told them that I was going to use the ramp as a deck, they suggested that I add 4 supports, one in each corner. This would be to protect the hinges for the back ramp.
@fullthrottl13 жыл бұрын
I’m curious about what kind of hinges are on it. Mine is designed to support heavy loads like when I drive my 700+ pound motorcycle on it. I trust the hinges on my trailer completely.
@lindaselover2536 Жыл бұрын
@@fullthrottl1 My hinges are strong. I am putting styrafoam blocks under the long ends to support the deck, I was told that my hinges are strong enough.
@fullthrottl1 Жыл бұрын
@@lindaselover2536 I’m sure they are. That’s a nice simple solution for your deck plan. Easy and also light weight. Great idea. Thanks for the comment. Others may benefit from your sharing of ideas. Love it!

I thought about this idea. However, I opted for Air Craft cable (Same that is used on the roll up door) heavy carabiners and turnbuckles. Attached to the rod bearing plate down to the door. So no matter how unlevel the ground is, the ramp/deck is always 90 degrees to the trailer frame. And it is easily removed, with the carabiner, to return to motorcycle load mode. I see this is 3 years later, how are these legs working for you?

@@bobbymcgee901 glad it worked out. There is a lot of tension on those cables. I actually removed one for easier access and reduced tripping hazard. It still works fine with just one.

That looks like that turned into a bigger job than expected. How is it working out? I'm thinking of doing something similar to that.
@fullthrottl12 жыл бұрын
It did throw me a bit of a surprise, but it worked out just fine. No problems with it at all. I could have insulated the door when I had it apart, but I didn’t realize how hollow it was when I started and the plywood is 3/4” thick, which does offer insulation value.
@CharlesButler3 жыл бұрын
I have been wanting to do this to my cargo trailer as well. But was skeptical regarding what bolts to use.
@fullthrottl13 жыл бұрын
I used 2” x 3/8ths inch mild steel bolts and flat washers with nyloc nuts. Counter sunk them in the inside of the door for a flat floor with nothing sticking up. You should paint the heads so they don’t rust. I used tremclad with a small artists paint brush.

What kind of bike is that in the background?
@minthos40453 ай бұрын
i wonder if you could install them on the top side and screw through the metal frame which would hold the load better.
@fullthrottl13 ай бұрын
It would probably be better support, yes. The only issue I see with that is when you open the door to load a bike or quad, the ramp would not be able to go all the way to the ground because of the jacks.
@minthos40453 ай бұрын
@@fullthrottl1 good point mate. Then I am thinking drilling through the side frame but about a foot away from top frame . Do you think I can aim without opening the plywood just following the existing screws on the side?
@fullthrottl13 ай бұрын
@@minthos4045 maybe, I like the fact that it’s 3/4” plywood and to add another piece to fill the gap gave lots of support. Removing the plywood really wasnt a big job. You might want to insulate it while you’re at it. Let me know what you decide to do. I’m curious.

Hi Rob, do you recall if you considered screwing the jacks directly to the hollow steel tubing, and if so why you rejected this idea?
@fullthrottl119 күн бұрын
I did, but decided I wanted them farther apart for stability. The outside ones would have interfeared with the door locks so I did it that way. Thanks for watching and asking. I hope you liked it.

Now note not all cargo doors have good backing in them from the factory and when using a level on a trailer the trailer it self must be level first or your item will be crooked on your trailer.
@fullthrottl13 жыл бұрын
I had levelled the trailer prior to starting the video but didn’t think to mention it. You have made a very good point. Thanks for adding that Frank.

I can't get past the 2 trip wires now on each side. Yes, I know, just avoid them, but sooner or later you're gonna clothesline .
@fullthrottl13 жыл бұрын
Yes, they are a problem. I’ve almost tripped on them in the past when the ramp was just that, a ramp. Sometimes I just hang a towel on them to make it a side wall. Open to other suggestions for sure. It’s still an evolving project.
