This is a walk through video of how i built my drop down bed system in my cargo to camper conversion i hope it's not too confusing and is helpful with your own builds.
When looking for your steel check steel companies remnant sections. They typically sell by the pound. Much cheaper than big box hardware stores.

FINALLY SOMEONE FIGURED IT OUT! I have watched about 100 VIDS on different bed options and I wondered why no one has came up with this. I will tell you why this is the best overall option: 1. It's up on the sealing you have full length of van 2. You can modify your space underneath as you like 3. Sofa? Cupboards? Motorcycle? Inflatable motorboat!, removable cabinets - mix and match as you like 4. Cheap, cheap and cheap - fast fast and fats unlike electric powered bullshit. Which is expensive and slow. 5. Doesn't not consume any power Seriously best option out of all. I'm planing space for my Aprilia RSV1000 and sofa combo/ sofa + kitchen extension cabinet- storage place(removable with bolt in option for safety) This is the best solution IMHO. I was going to do this somehow. But you nailed it.

I must say (again) WOW! This is great! I believe I heard you say in a previous video that you spent a lot of time searching for a bed suspension system, it's clear that this brilliant conclusion is a result of much time, money, thought and problem solving. I've been searching for quite some time myself for the right solution for my 27' travel trailer. I've looked at Murphy Beds, Hydraulic systems, etc. and I'm currently focused on how to make your solution work (without the benefit of rear cargo doors). So many points to make here, not the least of which relates to the fact that this solution doesn't rely on power. If the shocks wear over time, they can be replaced. I'm a DIY female who will always choose power tools over diamonds and pearls, and I believe I'll get it done with many thanks to you for sharing your knowledge, skills and innovative approach! You might consider building a kit and/or selling plans, I believe you'd be wildly successful with just that as a start! I'm still rooting for you, Brian! Thanks again so much!

Thanks Cassie! I hope the video makes enough sense lol. And yes this bed system definetly took some brain power for sure lol but i thrive on a good challenge!! I too looked forever for a solution that didn't involve power and that one person could do alone . Plus it all cost less than a happijac system! And i gotta say I love when someone is all about doin their own projects even more so when a women is down to get their hands dirty lol. I applaud you!!!. As for selling plans or manufacturing the parts I think that's a great idea! I think I might start local and sell on the classifieds and see what kind of attention it receives. Thanks again for watching !

It all makes sense to me and it's brilliant. KZbin is such a great platform for sharing and learning and I use it for learning and very rarely for entertainment. It's amazing to me that there continues to be so many opportunities for (UN-tapped) content and improvement upon (empty) attempts to share content. As you grow your channel, your knowledge library and your business (?), try to remember that there are millions of us out there, like minded and supportive of hard work, humility and innovation. It is REFRESHING to stumble upon incredibly useful information such as you have shared here. I'm not a cheerleader without a team, certainly no creeper, just sincerely grateful for meaningful and useful content that is a valuable use of my time. Also has the added bonus of not having to deal with typical bed/sitting area conversions where you have to deal with 4+ cushions and having to make&strip the bed every day. Ugh, I'd never do that.. it would always be a bed unless I had guests. You can ALSO add a table top that you don't have to move when lowering the bed. Just make sure the table is slightly lower then the lowest bed bracket. (I saw that in another video that used a garage pulley system)

Great mechanical solution. In the sleep position, all weight is on solid steel brackets fixed to the walls. In the up position one side of the empty bed rests on another pair of solid brackets while the other side is held up by 4 gas springs. Lowering the spring lifted section to the resting brackets only requires you to overcome some of the middle spring tension and unhooks the bed from the upper solid brackets for easy pull down with leverage against those middle springs. I wonder if the double sided rails are really needed to pull the bed off the hooks, single sided rails are obviously needed to keep the bed inside. A larger two-person version would be needed for couples, reaching deeper inside the van or shipping container.

You Sir, are both intelligent, inventive and generous in equal measure! Your system and I mean “Your” system should be within the skill set of most if not all Van dwellers, with all necessary materials being easily procured at a local level. Your basic system works great but there are height / power / configuration options which could easily be added in to the design making it even better! You could do worse than develop / patent this as a product and either make and sell your own or license it out to other mainstream manufacturers. I can see you getting a lot of interest and orders from the many trade fairs in the US. All the best, Will.

I’m about 3/4 of the way into this project. I’m going with a wider frame to fit the entire mattress, and longer just due to my trailer width. I’m not necessarily a carpenter, but I am a metal worker. Now I did use unistrut and I machined a wheel out of aluminum. I have worked the sides using just the 40lbs struts so we could make sure it worked. It would almost be worth it to buy a couple of 5-10lbs struts so they are easy to work while figuring out where the placement of stuff will be. Trial and error like you said, wish I could post some pics, but thanks for the inspiration with your video. I do some car shows in the Spring, and want to camp, but want comfort too...this is going to achieve that I feel.

Thanks for sharing this. This is exactly what I plan to do on mine. Like you, I couldn't find much out there. So, I really appreciate you doing this video. I want to try to run two singles side by side, the opposite direction, but one platform. There will be a channel in the middle to get in and out of the beds. Instead of brackets to hold the bed in place I plan on building tall cabinets so that once it is dropped the whole unit sits on top of them. It will give enough under clearance to put a 4 wheeler too in case it can't be off-loaded if we are boondocking in a parking lot somewhere. I'm sure my concept, like yours, will come with a bit of trial and error too. Anyway, thanks again Brian ----- super appreciated!

Thank you! I saw a video of a pro custom conversion using liftsupports and was like, "hmm, interesting, but HAS to be expensive". The I started researching pulley and cable systems and just ugh. So many issues with them. I didn't realize how inexpensive liftsupports are! I'd personally probably make my bed go down lower when it is bed mode though because I want to be able to sit up in bed. You should be able to lower the bottom brackets to the couch tops. (Or even make the couch tops be the place where the bed rests). The liftsupports should pivot to be able to go down as well I think. (And there would be no weight on them since the bed is resting on the couch top.) All told, it looks like all the pulley and the lift system would end up costing about the same amount of money. But, the lift is SO much easier to move around. The bed and seating area is one of the biggest things I've worried about with living in a van. I don't want to have to deal with the typical camper bed/seating&table setup w/ cushions&moving a table&stripping a bed every day. You could ALSO add a tabletop that is slightly lower then the lowest point of the bed and not have to worry about moving it out of the way every day.

Only disadvantages I can think of is less in-use adjustment (no big deal if built right), and the challenge of all the construction trial and error for each individual application (again no big deal after it’s all over). What beautiful work on this loft bed! Very nice of you to show us how you did it. I'm fascinated by loft beds, they are so clever. First calculation must be to determine weight load - bed frame, mattress, bedding, adults, movement effect. Struts have to match weight and more. Not sure how those L plates on wall can hold up so much weight - they look so small. Love this construction, very well done. Love the wall colors too, you are bold in your choices, so nice. I wonder how the Euro RVs make their loft beds. They seem to have 3 ways: 1. Fully automatic with linear actuator. 2. Springs and glide mechanism like a drawer on glides but vertical. This is manual. 3. Hinged on one end to a giant hinge that swings down like a swing out basket. Manual.

Brian, that bed is genius! All the Euro RVs have these loft beds, and not a single US maker except older Safari Trek models, make loft beds. Why not? Its the only one for me. I would use linear actuators instead of gas struts. Similar concept but bed slides smoothly straight down and they are more robust. Struts make me nervous. You will be adding two bodies to that structure for another 300 lbs + 170 = 470 lbs. Might be too much for gas struts. Thanks for a great idea and excellent build! Glad I came here.

Thank you for explaining this so well. I’ve done quite a bit of trial and error in my trailer, but it is time for me to go with a proven success-and your setup seems like something I will actually be able to do.

Thank you for this. I have a Motorhome and have been wanting to put a bunk bed above the driver and passenger front drivers seats. The ones I have found were so complicated and looked very questionable as far as safety goes. This is simple and safe. Also love the he pot lights you added into the bottom.

Ingenious, storing the bed at the ceiling. Your design allows a large bed but the bed is completely out of the way when not needed. Suggestion: It might be possible to use garage door tracks with their associated guide wheels in place of the heavy channel iron. The garage tracks are thin aluminum. Your camper tracks don't support the weight of the bed so it might work and save some weight.

Very informative video, especially on how you figured out and mounted the support struts. The only problem I foresee, especially in colder weather, is the melamine base for the mattress. I expect you will get a lot of trapped moisture in there. Much better to put in some slats to provide ventilation.

Excellent concept and explanation! Great job. Please use a flashlight, phone light, anything, to illuminate the dark areas where we’re supposed to “see”, i.e., at 5:27 you are describing the wheel riding the inside channel of the black frame. The camera is adjusting to the increased illumination of the cloudy sky, NOT the dark bed channel! Thanks for sharing your great idea for a bed without a hydraulic lift.

I love the this idea, so simple to understand and elegant in use, with the added advantage that you can still use the trailer to haul large gear under it, without having to dismantle the bed every time. I’ve got a couple of suggestions; 1. Most people put ventilation holes in the mattress support to let it breathe and stop mould growth, especially as it is stored touching the ceiling. It may not be an issue if it’s not used as a permanent dwelling but may be worth considering. 2. Having the bed down when driving would lower the centre of gravity and be slightly safer in an emergency situation. The other advantage is that it would allow the mattress to air out while you drive. 3. Built in bench seating either side would give you a nice seating area and the bed could rest on the backs of them instead of on the angle iron.

Mal Smith well thank you! . And yes my 4 wheeler would fit under the bed when down except for..... my fold up bemches have to be down. In order for the bed to co e down all the way. They over lap a little bit. If i had a longer trailer i would have no problem. But if you don't have fold up couch/beds like I do then it shouldn't be a problem.
